I poke a bandit with a dagger, he explodes into a million pieces.

Instead of the game being a 8/10, it brought it down to a 7/10 on my mindset.  It just seems so.. stupid, What was bioware thinking?

That those of us who aren't into gratuitous gore are a distinct minority?

I don't even pay attention to it, it just doesn't seem that important.

The combat in DA:O was slow... but at least it was realistic.  I can understand a few mage spells completely re-arranging enemies body parts... but a simple stab? I don't think so.

Of course its not realistic. Nothing about any element of the combat in this game is realistic. Its all Varric's version of cool storytelling. There's no way there are that many apostates, shades, demons, street gangs, etc running around one medium sized city. All the girls are well endowed, all the rogues are ultra cool, and all the fights are massive and gory because that's how Varric tells the story to the girl listening.

And the gore in DAO was nearly as silly, especially the blood spatters sticking on you forever (if you didn't turn that off).

i love the new combat . I do wish the gibs were a little less extreme on alot of attacks , its fine seeing a spell or really powerful attack really emash someone.

Hmm, I never thought of that, that the exaggerated hits were all Varric's story telling.  Well that makes me feel a lot better.

Dismissing it as Varric's method doesn't address the larger picture. This game was written like an arcade - not a real RPG. I still find NWN did it best. IF the killing damage was excessive then the gore was too.

So what is realistic about a mage who cast fire and ice and lightening from his fingertips. It is a fantasy and I see no reason such things cannot fit into a fantasy world. Otherwise let's do away with all magic as well.

Bioware have a lot to learn from Warhammer 40.000 Dawn of War series when it comes to epic kills and gore.

I use the "No Gibbing" mod from Dragon Age Nexus. Saved the game for me because the "popping like a balloon" death by dagger was really bugging me.

Because bodies exploding is the way in which awesome things happen when you push the button...
