Arrival is a Sidequest, not a real ending or a bridge.

i understood that much from his first post but the importance is little and not really the reason to buy.

The correct reason would be to get more ME2 as the dude above said, sure thats valid, but story wise you miss pretty much nothing despite initial word on this last DLC.

"this dlc happens weather you pay for it or not" more reason not to buy it lol, jk

LotSB didn't had any choice.

Well except for hostage situation but is very minor and hostage lives any way.

Well Liara romance too but still not too big.

You missed my point.

Both DLCs will happen in ME3, played it or not.
Only diffrence is that those who played it won't gonna need explanation how on Earth Liara is SB and whatever happens in Arrival.
That's why they are bridge DLC's and that's why they have no significant choices.
And for those who romanced Liara and didn't play LotSB it will work out like they continued romanced.

not optional? so are they mandatory or something? dude you want to see every little detail you chose in me2 affecting me3, i get it but its fair to tell people this is not worth it if what they expect is some sort of real ending.

How about "dlc with effects in ME3 but nothing major" would you be happy with that

They are not optional in the sense that they are canon; they are only optional as far as the player is concerned (i.e. whether they choose to complete them in their game), but in the grand scheme of things, they aren't.

I really don't know how to explain this anymore. I'm sorry. Maybe someone can clear it up better.

I'll try. What Fiery Phoenix is trying to say is that events in LotSB and Arrival will happen regardless of whether you play them or not and import a save into ME3 or not. It's a bit like starting a new game in ME2 without importing from ME1 and the fact that despite this several events simply happen whether you played them out or not (Eden Prime was attacked, Benezia died on Noveria, The Citadel was attacked, etc.). Whether you've played and imported these DLC saves or not, the events from LotSB and Arrival will --according to the canon-- have happened anyway. You're not playing them isn't going to erase the fact that the events --according to the lore and canon-- took place.

Precisely, lets take LotSB as an example, even if you never even bought or downloaded the DLC, when ME:3 comes out Liara will Be the new Shadow Broker.  You will find out in game that she discovered the information on her own, tracked down the SB and took his place.  Whether you help Liara or not is irrelevant.  She will become the Shadow Broker regardless. Hence, it is canonical.

So don't buy it *shrugs*

Who cares? I'm buying it because I enjoy playing "Mass Effect". I'm not going to sit here and nitpick on exactly how pivotal the DLC is, in relation to the over arching plot. That's kinda retarded to me. You don't gotta make a thread and talk for 2 pages about why you don't like it....just don't buy it. It's ok....

This is bad. This probably means that nothing really important is going to happen in this DLC. It will be like "oh, the reapers almost invaded and destroyed the galaxy, but that's not a big deal, let's just forget and never talk about it"
.
Edit: I just finished seeing the giantbomb preview and damn, things might not be what they seen. I just can't wait to play it.

I'm kinda confused why people expected completely OPTIONAL DLC to have a huge impact on the game. That thought never entered my mind. At best I expected a couple hours worth of good game play, that is an additional story kinda setting up "ME3". And it obviously does, despite the fact that it's not "OMG!" important.I'm sure the canon story line in "ME3" will mention this DLC, considering it lays the groundwork for the Reaper invasion, which is obviously vital to that game.

Well, let's also keep in mind that there's a supposed ultimate sacrifice and that there could be at least one big choice to make in it, so while the events happening are inevitable, how they happen may be dynamic rather than static. For example, importing an ME1 save to ME2 with BDtS completed had a couple of outcomes depending on what you chose to do with Balak, and the same could likely apply to the end of the Overlord DLC going into ME3. So there could still be one or two different circumstances and variations for import depending on how Arrival plays out too.

Exactly.

And I would add that even though they can be played pre-SM, the events more Shepard closer to where they to be for ME3 - with LotSB, Shep got an information broker so no more reliance on the Council or TIM for information. In this one it looks like that not only will we re-establish some ties with the Alliance, allowing us to step back from Cerberus but perhaps there is some other "neutral" organization that will allow Shepard to operate independently.

This is one of my main problems with DLC, all DLC is optional, it has to be by design so "Arrival" can only have so much effect on ME2 and ME3. Not every 360, PS3 or PC owner has access to broadband. Heck there are of people on this site from the Czech Republic ( and other such countries ) that can't even download specific DLC's. Bioware can't make "Arrival" a signifficant game changer without excluding a portion of thier gamer base.

Ugh, okay, I've pretty much given up hope that this was going to do what I thought was necessary for ME2's story.

I'm sure this will be good DLC, it just won't add enough meat to make the overall disappointment of ME2's story look nicer leading into ME3.

OK. Let me get this straight. This is a side quest. Not part of the main story. You can choose to do it or skip it.

All right.

Adm. Hackett. Shepard! Somebody's found proof that the Reapers are real and she's been captured by Batarians. Can you help us out?

Shep: Nah.

===========

It may be optional in the strictest sense, but story-wise, who would skip that?

Not quite. A better analogy would be going through the Omega 4 relay.  In ME:3 regardless of whether or not you kept the base, Shepard will always have gone through the relay.  Think of Arrival and LotSB as being prequels to ME:3, playing them gives you details of what actually happened.  Its like reading a book, then a prequel comes out explaining something that happened in the first books history in much greater detail. Kinda like the first contact war with the Turians, a prequel might give more details of what actually happened, rather than the vague references that we have currently in game.

Nah, i'm just going to go chill with the councilor..

Who cares if it's ultimately a sidequest? It's Mass Effect, and it's a story directly related to the Reaper threat.

well, any DLC doesn't have the story on ME 2? as far as I can say, it's not a part of main ME 2 game unlikely liara shadow broker. it's certainly side quest. it seems to connect with ME 3. but if I concern the end of DLC part, it's not really prequel to ME 3. it's like taking few parts from shadows broker and overlord. but it doesn't mean that DLC is sucks. actually, Arrival is very cool. I still believe that ME 2 has couple more DLC before November.

oh, by the way any previews didn't exactly explain very end of the game. so until we will get on our hands, we are not sure. there are 5 missions. game sites didn't explain all 5 missions. so....

Not story-based ones. Chris Priestly stated that this is the last one. There may be weapon/armour packs and alt appearance packs etc. but nothing else story-driven.

As Terror said, Chris has explicitly confirmed that Arrival is the last story-based DLC. He says it's possible that there may be a third appearance pack or a new weapon pack at some point before ME3, but that's about it.

I wonder if we'll get an "Ultimate Edition" of some sort soon-ish?
The problem is that I'm going to be impatient for Arrival all weekend =/
