Anyone have a good solid strategy for dealing with rogues that stealth and then backstab you?

I did finish the game already on Nightmare but they still are a big pain in the bloody ass.

Putting a paraglyph on top of your squishies will save them.

Petrify and then hit them with everything destructive your party has at once.

If they manage to go stealth before you focus kill them, simply make every one go away form where they went stealth, and put your tank there (with max health if its on nightmare) this will in most cases make them backstab your tank who should be able to survive, unless we're talking 3 rogues at once in nightmare.

I wish my rogue would:
1. Lose all debuffs.
2. Be unhittable

after stealth

but thats just me

move all characters who cannot take the backstab away from the point where the rogue stealthed. It appears they have only the rudimentary stealth with low duration and slow movement speed, so just run the squishies away. a high constitution warrior can generally take one backstab and survive on nightmare if they are for the most part above 75% hp (thats probably more aveline with shield defense, turn of the blade and some other sustainables) or like 90% if not a Sword/Shield tank. I find that if i just run my mage around and the rogue doesnt unstealth and attack shortly, they were targeting my mage and i just taunt with aveline.

silence from the templar tree stops them from stealthing. *pats 2-hander warrior fondly*

Depends on the level of rouge and your mage stats but... you can unstealth them with a upgraded mind blast I unstealth them with a lightning IF there's a mob close to where the gone hide firestorm can do it to if it hits right but best is mind blast close to where they gone hide.

Brittle/Softening skills + Archers Lance with decent cunning will usually 1 shot those rogues on nightmare.

First time i tried that combo with varric I crit the templar rogue for 7k.

Easiest way I found is for Hawke rogue to assassinate them.

- Get the basics right: Never have any softies anywhere near the assassin, only your tank. Then just use Stonewall when appropriate, and focus fire with your party.
- Use CCC's: Shield Bash + Chain Lightning / Vendetta / Explosive Strikes, or Mage's BRITTLE inducing abilities + Assassinate.
- Stunlock till they die: Horror / Petrify / Glyph of Paralysis + focus fire.

 This ^

It's the only sure way, ecspecially on tougher game difficulties. Rogues are far more important to quickly eliminate then bosses.

Yeah most people dont realize that in real DA2 (nightmare) you cant count on disabling skills like petrify/horror since the duration on lieutenants/bosses is reduced to 1/5th or so.

Since Rogues are an evasion class leave them disoriented so your attacks dont miss. Dont bother with using a disorient combo because the -50% evasion from just being disoriented is way better.

What I do, as soon as I notice that they go stealth I use telekinetic burst or mind blast, that takes them out of stealth.

1) Run away from the spot where they stealthed , put tank there and activate stonewall (improved and tank will take no damage). They ambush about 2-3 seconds after stealthing
2) Use dog they like to backstab him a lot XD
3)Try to lock them down -petrify works best for me and then Archers lance, also Horror / stonefist /pummel /winter's grasp - whatever that can stop them. Sometimes they can resist and some super strong ones are immune! . Focus landing your combos on them.
4) I belive there are two stealth types - one is when they throw gas under their feet - this one you cant do anything about. And the second one is when they flipback. The flipback require them to be in melee with something so i try to kite them so they dont stealth.
5) Sometimes they can stealth after you done a cast on them , you will even see your spell animation but they will disappear. Try to land spells as soon as they appear they take only few secs before restealthing if you focus them

@Crocodiles - never tried but i belive it only works on thsoe that can be knocked back - there is whole bunch of assasians that are immune to that ;/

They don't get knocked back, it just removes stealth, and they reappear just standing there. I know once in a while if you place glyph a paralysis underneath you it will paralyze them mid stealth and save you from being backstabbed.

Very easy answer: if a rogue is around, tell everyone to place their back against a wall and hold position. Had gotten myself into a seemingly impossible to overcome situation in that mission where you try and stop the rebel coterie commander from raiding your business' shipments. All my party was dead except for me, but only assassins were left. The boss assassin and 3 elite assassins. Backed myself into a corner and they could not kill me. Honest, I could simply stand there and in a few seconds be fully healed. Could only whittle away at them, but it was impossible for them to make any progress on me.

I had suspected this tactic prior to this, but had not realized just how much you castrate the assassins by doing so. Now every one of my fights involving assassins has me placing chars against walls. Just be careful, some behaviors and tactics will cause allies to leave the wall, but you can eventually track down the problem child before future fights.

Forgot to mention that my solo vs. 4 assassins was on nightmare. Blew my mind when that happened.

Also, watch out for when your allies turn to attack an enemy that is also against the wall, that opens up their back. Keep them focused on enemies that are no more than 45 degrees from being perpendicular to the wall. Corners (2 walls) do better and nooks and crannies (3 walls) do best.

Petrify, Mighty Blow the brittle sod and focus everyones fire. If I'm sure they were last attacking my mage, force field him.

Or nuke it from orbit just to be sure.

Petrify is a good policy in general, but it doesn't work on the rogues in the Brekker fight. Keeping the dog out at all times is definitely a good idea, on the off chance that he eats a backstab for you. I'm a big fan of the combustion grenades, which work well with the fire-immune dog.  Upgraded Barrier has saved my ass plenty of times.

Also, Life Ward potions.  I've yet to resort to this myself, but with a 30 minute duration and a 5 minute cooldown, you could wait around for 15 minutes to ward up your entire party before a tough fight, and another 5 to have the cooldown available mid-battle.

Aveline is pretty good against them with all that passive damage resistance.

The life wards cooldowns are like other potion cooldowns; they only apply to the character that used it, so you could apply it to everyone without waiting 15 minutes. And the cooldown starts once the effect is consumed, so you can only use it twice in battle if your battlle lasts more than 5 minutes.
