So on my previous play throughs I have always used Aveline as the tank, but I thought I would change it up and go ahead and try being the main tank for my party. As I was reading through though I saw alot of people talking about 2h tanks? So honestly which one is better s/s or 2h? Or do you go with s/s till a certain lvl and then switch. just kind of curious as this is my first warrior play through that I'm taking seriously.

Most people say that 2h is much better because there aren't really any threat generating skills in the sword and shield tree. Therefore, you have to rely on damage. I have a s/s tank and a 2h warrior in my party and it works out fine. There are a lot of skills that work with threat: goad, armistance, battle synergy. I use those to keep the threat on my sword and shield user. It's pretty easy when all the enemies attack the one unkillable companion. I play on Hard, and the only time I have trouble is when there are either assassins, or mages. But with putting some points in the templar tree, it's becoming easier to handle with the mages.

The main benefit of my 2h tank (was my first time through the game so it wasn't ideal, I built it pretty much as a dps and it just generated threat naturally, so I stopped using Aveline. Hard difficulty) was that, if I was in manual control of it, I could hold threat on bosses without actually taking many hits, because they can move away when the boss begins an attack, be out of range when the attack happens, and close back up to them almost straight away. So with fights like the high dragon (the ground phase anyway), the rock wraith and the golem in Varric's quest, I barely even needed a healer, just potions for when I didn't move in time.

Also, all of their AoE damage can almost negate the need for a tank sometimes. between whirlwind and mighty blow I could easily kill groups of lesser enemies (the ones with the tiny health bars), and with assail and cleave both active I could almost kill groups of mid-level enemies the same way. Then just let the ranged pick off what's left and concentrate on any lieutenants

Aveline has pulled me out a rut many times. Immovable!
