Just some background: So, my boyfriend and I have both been playing Dragon Age II and have noticed something odd about the differences in our amount of points for abilities.  I am a level 20 mage in Act III and my boyfriend has a different character that is level 22 mage in Act III.  We both have the Black Emporium expansion and the Sebastian expansion, and all the items from the Facebook game unlocked.  We have both bought the Tomes which give 1 spell ability point in Act 1 and Act 2 and also the one from the Black Emporium.  We also both received an ability point from the demon in Night Terrors. So we both have the extra four ability points. We are both playing on the same gamertag.  I have loaded my character with one of the pre-setting stories and he has loaded his game from a previous Dragon Age: Origins save.
At level 20, my mage has 24 ability points.  At level 22, my boyfriend currently has 29 ability points.  I understand the difference of two ability points, since he is two levels higher than me, but we cannot figure out and account for the extra three ability points that he currently has.  He has completed more quests than me in Act III, so I'm wondering if there are quests which automatically give you more points in Act III or what may have happened.  If necessary, I can outline which spells and abilities we both have, as well as state the quests which he has completed that I haven't.

So the ultimate question is, are there quests in Act III which unlock spells/abilities or give extra points, or is this just a random bug that he is lucky enough to have experienced? lol

Side note: He has also unlocked blood magic, but remembers only putting one point in the blood mage toggle, only to have access to a second mana pool if necessary.  He swears he didn't put any points in anything else in that specialization, but the spells Sacrifice and Grave Robber have become available to use, accounting for the two of the extra three that are being questioned.  Unsure if this information means anything, but it's possible.

Thank you for any responses that may help answer my question.

There's a bug with Maker's Sigh that gives you more points than you should have by not really removing your abilities once you reload.
This sounds like it but I don't have much experience with it so I can't confirm it for sure.

There is a bug with the respec potion that can generate extra abilities. Bioware has said they are aware of it and looking to fix it. It isn't universal, and can cause other problems.

Did he ever respec his character?

Yes, we have both respec'ed our characters several times to play around with different spells/setups as a mage. He did at one point have the spells that randomly became available again, but has not respec'ed since he noticed the extra spells, for fear of losing them. If he were to respec again, would it return 29 ability points or only the 26 that he *should* have, out of curiousity?

No. What's happening is the potion doesn't properly remove all of your abilities. So if you spec into new abilities some of your old ones will still be available. Once you respec again it will count those abilities too so as you keep respeccing more and more points will be added (someone strike me if I got this wrong).
