I am at the part in the game right after anders does his thing and am at the docks running toward the gallows.
Then a blood mage shows up with about 20 shades and a pride demon....

My squad is: Mage Hawke, Merril, Aveline and Isabela. The best i can come up with is try to use my hand to hand guys to protect my mages while they spam area-of-effect attacks. This actually works pretty well until the pride demon shows up and kills everything...

I found the fights in this game pretty easy up till this point, but am finding this semi-impossible. Do any of you have ideas how to beat this fight?

Semi-impossible... I like it it's like a.. quasi-oxymoron.

Kill the mage, start aoeing the shades, petrify the pride demon when it appears, finish off shades. Not too bad.

Petrify is your friend. Two Petrifies are even better friends.

Pride demon doesn't even do anything, just move out of the stuff on the ground and kill the mage 1st then shades.

Yea I don't know what they were thinking when they designed the Pride Demons but they are such push overs.  Just ignore them.  The primary target is that blood mage.  Once she is dead it's all good.

I ended up backing up the staircase.  It created a good bottleneck, but that Pride Demon will go up the staircase.

A good CCC setup should clear out the shades fairly easy.  I had some trouble with this fight at first.

I also really like Gravitic Ring. Only Force Mage spell that actually effects everybody in the game, but if you position your worst enemy right in the middle, it essentially freezes them for a long time, with no damage resistance boost to them – pride demons included.

Always go for the spellcasters first. AOE the mooks and let Isabella roll them up.

Either fire or lightning spells, does it every time. But honestly, 20? You shouldn't have 20 unless you're not killing them fast enough.

Lieutenant ranked enemies don't have any impressive offesive ability but they are far from useless, well at least on nightmare. They buff and heal nearby allies and have certain debuffs and stuns to cast on you, and can order enemies to attack a single target ignoring aggro which could turn out badly if you're not aware of that. Sometimes I kill them first, but it's because I have the ability to.

Well... Xebenkeck does hit very hard on Nightmare. Also, Desire Demon's aura = magic resistance, so they can probably be a bane of every mage-heavy party.
