What is the worst that could happen when you select that carefree middle option or that innocent sounding good option?

Let me tell you; I accidentally all elves. :D

So here I was trying to salvage something after Merrill killed the keeper and we encountered the rest of her clan, so I pick the safe middle of option "Stand down", lets all think about what we are about to do, right? Not so. Upon selecting that fated option my Hawke issues a mocking challenge and we massacre the rest of Merrill's clan. (Merrill Friendship +15?) After a few minutes of bloody slaughter I stood in now empty Dalish camp my mouth hanging open and I felt the need to smack myself.

Dialogue wheel... I don't know whether to love it or hate it sometimes. <_<

what is the issue? they weren't trying to hear that **** period. only one option would have satisfied them and that is taking blame, which is obviously the one you didn't not pick.

That happened to me when I picked the option stating that the Keeper was possessed. I thought the Dalish would understand that their keeper becoming an abomination was a bad thing, alas no.

Had to reload as killing the whole clan was bloody awful. I'd say that was a huge jaw drop moment for a lot of people.

Yea, I think that was pretty much set up to have you kill them.

Every option but one leads to a massacre. And the one that doesn't - well, it makes no sense to me.

Issue is that I didn't want to slaughter the elves and the option I chose looked like a safe bet. Also, I don't reload so the elves are now dead and people in the Hanged Man chat about how the Champion murdered a lot of elves.

Just out of curiosity... what happens if you take the blame?

that choice has no emotions tied to them, theres alot of things like that.

if its the 3 sided arrow swirl thing thats not tied to any emotions and are base choices. the top one isnt good or anyhing, its just a different choice.

And given the personality you have developed over it, it selects a response based on Hawke's personality in regards to tone once you've made the choice among them.

Given the elves are pretty much out for blood by that time, it kind of makes sense, not being able to talk them down that easily.

In the elves scenario this made things even worse, hence I mentioned "a mocking challenge". I do enjoy the sarcastic responses, but damn... my Hawke was a total bastard. At least Merrill liked it when we killed her clan. I got +15 influence on her from that. Good stuff.

Yes, she is that crazy.

Additionally, you don't buy her gifts, or at least I won't on my next play, because they apparently give rival points. "Aww. That's a lovely Halla painting! I so love to hate you." It's like telling her to turn left to make her turn right! :D

Both the gifts and the quests at that stage don't give specific points, they just enhance your relationship. If your in rivalry with a character and give him a present, they'll gain rivalry.

the elves scenario wasn't a choice. It was a tone selection. The only way of saying it without making them attack is to take responsibility for Merrill's blood magic adn swear you'll never let anything liek it happen again (aggressive).

I think each love interest has a gift that gives friendship adn one that gives rivalry. Merrill gets friendship if you nicely give the Dalish keeper ring to her.

It's such fun I can't stop laughing about it now.

But I stopped questioning my moral choices when the killcount exceeded 200 intelligent humanoids. It happened early in act 1 if I remember correctly. Or something. Haha.

There's actually a very interesting Varric / Anders banter about this, where anders whines about almost killing a girl and Varric responds with

"You've killed 247 by my count blondie. And 563 guys, two dozen spiders and several dragons"
"that's not the same"
"it's not the same because this one you'd feel bad about?"

somewhat along those lines, anyway.

No. Both gifts I gave for her incresed rivalty. So I guess the "they enhance" theory is most likely valid here. Damned if it makes story sense, but it does make excellent gameplay sense.

Ah yes nothing beats heading down to the docks for a late night clean up, clearing out 20 - 40 people at the time, then heading up to hightown for some extra kill counts.... just so wrong

I remember that one. Ander's line in that one was one of the best pieces of voice acting ever. In my humble opinion. Whoever or whom writes story and dialogue for Bioware is brilliant.

At least for fenris, it makes perfect story sense - they changed the dialogue, so basically, when you're on rivalry, he takes "I could teach you to read" for pity, and the blade of mercy for mockery, rather then acts of kindness.

Can't we just blame that on the fact that Fenris is a brooding retarded emo? pretty please? :innocent:

The worst was when I accidentally told Isabella to **** herself out to that mage at the hanged man. Not what I intended. Felt terrible about that.

Even if he was, with that voice of his, I'd be perfectly willing to overlook it

Merrill secretly hates you if you have an on-going rivalty even if she says nice things when you give her gifts. I suppose it fits into her crazy character.
