The duel of chapter 2 - I won, but that wasn't close to enjoyable! Bioware needs to tweak this.

Well, the fights in Origins also had that element of staying out of the dragon's landing path (archdemon fight, or avoiding the Broodmother's tentacles, for instance.)
For me it was a subjective thing I could not put my finger on. I liked the DA:O boss fights, but found the DA2 boss fights tedious and I am relieved when they are over with. The person I quoted seemed to have hit the nail on the head as to why I like the boss fights in one game and not the other, especially since I get the same feeling of tedium and relief from console game boss fights in general.

Laying blame on the consoles is the wrong place to look - the combat as it is, is an unlucky mix, that wasn't sure if it wanted to be slow and tactical or fast and immersive. What we have, most closely resembles World of Warcraft during Wotlk. (which is bad enough)

I think you've got to be lying, I was on normal and I had to attack him THROUGH the pillar because he just had too much HP and did too much damage, there's no other way aside from the OPs way of attack, run away, attack, rinse repeat

Nope. When he uses his charge, if you can lure him into charging one of the pillars he'll stun himself for a minute or so when you can beat the crap out of him with impunity. Rinse and repeat till he's dead (it also seems he takes more damage than normal when stunned, but since the sensible thing to do at that point is alpha strike him with every ability you've got it could just be those).

It's still not a particularly enjoyable fight though. The problem I think is they're pattern bosses which simply don't fit the DA format due to it's lack of direct control. They work fine in a more arcade/action oriented environment when you have full control of everything from movement to precisely when you attack, but not in DA. It's the same issue with the Rock Wraith, although there the party AI is the problem.
Conversely the High Dragon fight worked quite well, at least in the format. Of course it was still frustrating, irritating and annoying but then that was the point.

The fight itself was bad yes. However, I was able to look past it as fighting the Arishok meant something. I was fighting a respectable foe and I felt a bit of regret when he died. The fights against Meredith and Orsino on the otherhand were horrendous as I felt nothing.

That said, the gameplay of the duel was very bad, as a mage. It's not challenging, it's tiring and annoying. An epic duel is not necessarily measured by the length. In fact the longer it gets, the less epic it feels unless you have a very enjoyable and dynamic fighting system.

It is a long fight, but I found the requirement for manual dodging etc more involving than, say, the Loghain duel (which felt as if I'd just set my Warden to "on" and then come back later). Though was gutting when he took a potion, and overall was too long (as with the Meredith/Orsino fights).

The only major complaint I have with the Arishok duel is when he stabs Hawke and holds him in the air. It's basically a free health drain for the Arishok while Hawke just pretends to be a shish kabob. I think if there were some kind of mini-game included that allowed the player to resist those kind of attack, fights like the Arishok would be far more enjoyable.

It's fun if you have
1) rigged decoy
2)lingering shroud
3) shadow veil
4) assassinate
5) dog
6) combustion grenade

What part of DA:O boss battles were at all tactical? I just stood there and used my most powerful abilities until they were dead. Only the dragon in Blackmarsh in Awakenings was remotely interesting, because of the lightning ball phase.

There are a few interesting fights in DA2, but the Arishok sadly isn't one of them. Benny Hill him until cooldowns are back, pop them when he charges, Benny Hill him again. Repeat until he runs out of health potions.

The best fight technically in DA2 is the Rock Wraith, and is the one I would rate as genuinely well designed. Fights that are quite satisfactory include the High Dragon, Varterrul, Meredith and Hybris. The rest are boring if I'm honest. Meredith is unfortunately too easy, the statues themselves should probably have their own unique aoe's to avoid. Hybris is interesting in that you can stun him with his own ability - which is something I think you should 100% have to do to win instead of just being a bonus.

Ultimately however I think the biggest change they need to make come DA3 is stopping you being able to kite the bosses indefinately/avoid every attack with careful micro. Its possible to solo a lot of bosses just by kiting them until they perform some ability that causes them to pause and then chipping away at their hp. And you don't even need a tank character as it stands.

The duel was lame, certainly quick enough on normal with an assassin rogue but as was said, the Arishok didn't feel like he was designed for 1v1 combat. I don't see why some people prefer Origins bosses, DA2 bosses are all leaps and bounds ahead of anything in Origins. It didn't feel like twitch gameplay at all to me O_o Especially when you have the option to pause the game and issue commands.

One thing that does annoy me about boss fights, and even elites is their resistance to our abilities. Have them take less damage, that's fair enough, but why make them resist so many debuffing abilities? What is the point in "Mark of Death" if it only works on bosses for 2 seconds? you don't need it for normal enemies, they die to quick for it to even be worth casting. Correct me if I'm wrong but it also seems like the only cross class combo that works on bosses is Petrify+Assassinate. Why give us all these cool tools if we can only effectively use them on the crappy enemies that die in 3 seconds anyway? GRRRR!
