Seems an obvious point right, but I think it needs repeated. Bioware writers created Shepard and gave us a great game series with he/she as the protagonist. You are playing through selected slices of Shepard's life not vicarously recreating your own in the fictional future ME universe. They could never make a game that open and believable to facilitate that anyway.

So any people Shepard meets is romanceable for his/her character. This is entirely up to BW to decide as it is their character and not ours or an avatar of ourselves, but merely a great video game Intellectual Property (IP). They are only ever going to have  a few options and people should not take it as a slight if they don't get what they personally want. If they gave options for everyone then it would become a dating simulator and little else. They would have to spend so much time and money to make everyone happy in what is supposed to be a little bonus part of the game to make it seem like a movie of Shepard's life and tribulations.

I am nothing like Shepard nor will I ever be. His/her character has nothing to do with my real life. I enjoy stepping into his/her shoes (yeah I play both genders) for many hours for entertainment. I think we all need reminded of that. It is entertainment not make it my way or else. I think BW for the most part has done a great job making entertaining games. So even if I dislike most of the romance options, they still have given SHEPARD many choices which then you decide among. It isn't meant to mirror your personality, but Shepard's. None of us will ever make out with an Asari. Sorry everyone. Image IPB

So yeah I can understand disappointment in not getting preferred choices, but not ranting make it my way or else to satisfy what I want that goes on at these boards. They are going to always go for LCD in games and such. They would rather hit the target for 80% of gamers than 10%. Are you suggesting they should focus on the very small minority at possible detriment to the company as a whole? If they lose sales and then they have to shelve things or spend less on their next games which makes a spiral of bad games and maybe the demise of the studio.

I would hope they work on some romance DLCs, because then they'd be able to determine if it is worth it saleswise. At least they would recoup some of the money they spent for fanservice. Maybe everyone can win with that method. It is up to BW and not I.

Well I hope ME3 is the best of the bunch and I get entertainment out of playing as Shepard once again.

I changed the discussion to remove anything like orientation to make sure it is not a locked topic though I thought the other was benign. Oh well mods do their job and I was one so I know how thankless it can be.

Actually I'm creating Shepard's life in the future ME universe.

And Shepard wants to be galactic emperor. I am extremely angry that she cannot attempt to become galactic emperor. *shakes fist at bioware*

Seriously though you don't need to think of yourself as Shepard to want more romance options or whatever options.

Ah yes, "Shepard".

On a more serious note, it's easier to say "I saved X" or "I killed X" than "My Shepard killed/saved X" - I am not Shepard but I sure as hell put myself in his role and roleplay as Shepard.

The guy is actually making a pretty legitimate point (one of which the Bioware developers, I think, agreed with, saying how ME is more like a third person narrative) and you are all being ****s. You might not agree with him but show some more respect.

It's not, though. Shepard's backstory has more variables than the Grey Warden's (which is who Muzyka was using for comparison in the non-answer you're citing). S/he can run the gamut of selfless paragon to scumbag sociopath. Different characters - important characters - can live or die depending on your own personal canon.

Mass Effect does have a broad, set narrative, this is true - but it is not a "third person" narrative as Muzyka defines it there. If it were, then none of the choices we currently have would be available, and we'd all be playing as John Shepard from the cover.

'Sometimes, in some of our games, we are going to have a defined character with a more defined view. Almost like a third-person narrative -- where Mass Effect is more in that vein, Dragon Age isn’t in that vein; you could see the differences between the two. It’s just part of the design and the choices made for each game. It doesn’t mean that we’ve in anyway changed our philosophy toward enabling choice. We love giving players choice, and we are going to continue to enable that for future games. That’s a commitment for some of our franchises. For some other franchises we’ve had more defined characters and sort of approaches to things, and they’ve had a more defined personality and a more defined approach to the way they’ve proceed through the game and the world."

- BioWare head honcho Ray Muzyka

You just got served, The OP's post is full of WIN.
