(as noted, this is all story speculation and a discussion of DA2 represents for the Dragon Age series as a whole. If you feel inclined, please respond with your ideas or criticism, but this im hoping this can be more about what DA2 means to Dragon Age and not about whether the games story is good or bad, and with that-)
obviously, people have had alot of problems with the story of Dragon Age 2, and the fact that it is not a direct continuation of the wardens story or the storylines presented and hinted at therein. At best, people have said that this sucks, at worse, that the game doesnt matter to the larger picture.
i would argue that DA2 is an important addition to the Dragon Age lore regardless of any shortcomings in the contained narrative or the story of Hawke rise to power. moreover, in future games the events of DA2 will play a big part in world construction. Also, i think this is a good thing.
-From Witch Hunt and Flemith in DA2, it seems clear that the world is going to change. there is an idea that this will involve the God-child,(there are contiuity problems here, assuming you didnt do dark ritual, but these are easily explained, since Morrigan could be impregnated by you, alistar, or Loghain/some problems also if one warden makes the ultimate sacrifice, but again, these are not impossible to explain.) that Flemith and Morrigan will be involved, and that it has something to do with a radical change at the Divine level, (the God Child assuming the essence of the old god/archdemon)
-We dont know what Flemith is, but she is obviously something very important in the grand scheme of things and is going to play a part in the future of Thedas
-via the Architect, at least some individual darkspawn have gained some measure of awarness and reason (whether or not he is alive or dead, it is stated he imparted this cognizance to some other Darkspawn and it is easily possible that others like him (in terms of intellegence, not goals or attitude specifically) could be or have been created
of course i may be wrong, and feel free to correct me, but these three facts seem to be the most fundamental and lasting plot points from the first game. i say this because other decisions like the fate of the Dalish/werewolves, Circle of Ferelden, Caradin, and the Dwarf King are contingent on the choices of the player.
DA2 CREATES A CONFLICT WE KNOW AFFECTS ALL THE NATIONS OF THEDAS- also, by being a more closed ending, (the chantry looses the circles) bioware can work from a stronger narrative position on future games or, instead of relying on character choices, which is rewarding to the player and a great device, future games have an established conflict players know intimately. Instead of just telling us there has been a schism, DA2 allows players to understand and have even helped shape an aspect of the gaming world.
We know that Orlais (being a center of Chantry power) and Tevinter will be primed for conflict with this shift in power, and as Alistar notes in DA2, conflict is also brewing between Ferelden and Orlias. DA2 sets up the option of a huge, multi nation war, based on the diameterically opposed ideologies of a nation of mages and a nation that is the power center of the chantry- i may have taken this a bit too far but i think this is right, historically, look at the real world conflicts-
Essentially, freeing the circles is freeing an enslaved demographic,. I hesitate to write this, knowing full well that a video game does not even begin to equate to real world events and with the full realization that the American Civil War was not a mono-causal conflict, but both situations exemplify opposing, strongly held opinions as to the station of a demographic, considered to be the hegelian "the other" by one side of the conflict. while this situation must be qualified because the conflict between Tevinter and Orlais would not be internal, it still works because to powers conflict (again at least in part) over the position of mages in society.
i hope that was inoffensive, as i would hate to offend anyone with the comparison. if i have i apologize.
moving on, as it is generally assumed that Flemith is a power player, her helping Hawke shows that he has an important role to play in the changing of the world, via the templar/mage conflict, also unless you kill Anders, he suddenly (very suddenly) becomes an important person in Thedas, even if he ends up being a Spartacus, the conflict will have lasting ramifications for the social structure of Thedas, also like Pompey Magnus in the Third Servile war, whoever solves the mage problem (if the mages are defeated) becomes a serious power in the world.
While most characters remain basic companions, and not imperative to the big story,\\Hawke and Anders become key figures in Thedas at the moment (even if Anders is dead, but because of the Justice thing, his death is easily retconned). adding two major players helps fill the world with characters you know to be famous and powerful, like an Elminster or Drizzt, Cersi Lannister or Ned Stark, Paul Atredies or th Paddisah Emporer, Luke Skywalker or Vader ,whoever you want.
of other things, the discovery of the thaig and the uncertainty about the Dwarves as well as the idol and what it is are plot lines that can be followed. So i whatever Sandal is or how he is always killing anyone who comes near him (though that may just be something wierd). Also, it seems that the Warden and Hawke may be together fighting a Big Bad, but i think thats too unsure to really discuss.
So to conclude, i think DA2 adds a more focused, and clear framework for conflict in the future of DA that will help solidiify i clear setting and set of problems for the world. Also, some people have said that bioware rushed the game because of EA, if so, im glad they held of on some of the larger elements of a DA story. i think if DA2 is conceptualized as a piece of the DA mythos, and Hawkes story as a tangent on how the chantry/mage dynamic played out, then it is a good addition to the series.
DA2 in series continuity (story speculation/with spoilers)
