First off, I decided to let Gascard live during the first encounter. Later on in "All That Remains" Gascard can betray you, become a temporary ally during the fight, or Varric will kill him during the cutscene. My first playthrough Varric killed him to my surprise. My second playthrough he helped me murder that b*****d, and he walked away after the scene. Does it affect the story later on? So far, it seems that Gascard didn't killed anyone that I know and used that story just to learn necromancy, but I made him realize that he can become a monster, so I spared him. Which seemed more approiate for you?

Personally I wish I could kill Orsino before Act 3. He was aware of the necromancer, yet he helped him supplying him books and was aware of what he was doing.

I would personally track him down in Darktown and have Fenris put the hurt on him. He and his former mate just killed MamaHawke.

However, Gascard wasn't involved with Leandra's death. He wasn't looking for that necromancer just to learn it which he didn't because I made him realize that he would become a monster if he did.

I think you get letter from him later in Act 3 if you spare him and persuade him to help against his former teacher. IIRC there's something about him deciding to not practice magic again at all after realicing how bad blood magic is and some item (don't remember -staff or mage robe?) along with the mail.

Interesting. I never saw him again after I let him go.

Me either.

In order of my playthroughs I've: Let him go but told the guard; let him go but didn't tell the guard; and killed him.

I never saw the guy again reguardless of my choice.

I let him go on my more forgiving rogue and mage Hawkes - he might be innocent. Won't be so forgiving with my two-hander - he might be guilty so better to nip it at the bud.

I haven't tried approaching him in Darktown yet. I feel silly for telling the guard on him on two of my playthroughs. xP I'll need to change it up next time.

I let him go but then ratted him out to the templars who proceed to hunt him down in Darktown and execute him for being a bloodmage.

I've been trying to get footage of this exchange, without success -- I can't seem to keep Gascard alive through All That Remains. Can you tell me a little about what you did? What's your Hawke's dominant personality? Who did you take into the killer's lair with you (not Varric, obviously)? What dialog options did you pick?

After that templar died for believeing hawke wrote him a letter, but it was a false letter that got him killed, there will be dialog choices and you have to pick the 3rd one. it something about "it's not that simple" i forgot. hawke will say that gascard is innocent or something

I know how to keep him alive through the Emeric quest. What's giving me trouble is keeping him alive through the conversation in the killer's lair in which Quentin offers to take him on as a student again. He blows off all three of the dialog options I'm given.

I got a star option with which Hawke can persuade him in the killer's lair... don't know though what I did previously to get it.

I remember seeing the note from "O." in Gascard's house, but is that confirmed to be Orsino? (There must be Circle mages named Oswald or Oscar or whatever...) If so, that will make my templar-friendly playthrough feel much more satisfying.

It's confirmed. Orsino himself admits to it if you side with the Templars.

Thanks for the confirmation that there is, in fact, a dialogue option that I'm not receiving. I suspect it's linked to dominant personality -- what is your Hawke's?

Sarcastic... dunno though, it doesnt seem like the reason to get this option. Maybe depends on certain earlier dialog choices with him? (but don't ask me to recall them^^)

My Hawke picked the "Look at what he's become" option, and Gascard sided with her in Quentin's lair.

Later on she tracked him to Darktown again, and demanded answers. Fenris was very helpful, in his glowing ways. No, he didn't kill Gascard, he just encouraged him to answer Hawke's questions.

Spoiler!!!

It turns out that Gascard is not quite so innocent as he would like us believe. What he admitted to made my Hawke's blood boil, and she gladly whipped out the murder-knife.

Yeah, I got that too.  I thought it was strange when the killer actually turned out to be someone else.

Never saw him after I let him go at his mansion - I was super-confused that the killer was some random guy

Here's how it happened to me and my Hawke:

Went to DuPuis mansion, found Gascard and Alessa, offered Gascard help in finding the killer, Gascard splits.

Went home, talked to Gamlen, went to Darktown instead of going to Lowtown, found Gascard by the railroad cart and he performed some bloodritual to find Mom.

Went with Gascard to Quentin's lair, persuaded Gascard to side with Hawke and company, left after fight to go back to Darktown.

Found Gascard in same place, ready to leave town, questioned him with the help of Fenris, heard some very disturbing things, murder knife springs into action.

Party made up of: Hawke (naturally), Fenris, Isabela, Anders

I let him lived on my first playthrough after feeling sympathetic for the guy, then his true colours were shown as Quentin's apprentice, and his story about his sister was a lie, Varric one-shotted him. So now, for the rest of my replays, that ****** dies.

I killed him on my first metting with him. I saw the flowers and thought he was the killer. Alas he was not.
