In short, this problem is scaring the crap outta me.

First off my rig.

Intel i5 - 750 OC'ed to 3 GhZ stablility tested
ATI HD 5770 standart clocks (850/1200)
4 GB DDR3 RAM (1333 MhZ)
500 GB Samsung HD
Windows 7 Professional x64 OS

Now. I run DAO at max settings with 8xAA at very stable frames, only problem is, my PC starts with a LOUD! humming sound 15-20 minutes into gameplay. I have never before experinced this, so at first I tried other games to make sure it wasen't my CPU, GPU, PSU, RAM that was failing. But after running Bad Company 2 for 2 hours with no humming sound, I went back to DAO and surely after 15-20 minutes the sound returned.

I can dampen the humming by laying a hand on top of my case, so I thought it might be a loose screw or something like that, so off with the shields and tighten everything. No change, the humming sound still remains.

I am beginning to think it might be my PSU since the sound can be dampned if I lay my hand on the top of the case, but then again it could be a RAM failure. When I get home I will try to clean my PSU fan and see if it solves anything :)

Anyone had same problem or ever heard of anything like it?

Humming sounds can come from a ton of different things usually your GPU which larger ones are usually quite noisy especially when playing games. also the disc drive hums. It's hard to say without you describing it does it sound like a fan? or your disc drive when it starts up reading the disc? or something else?

Hard drives have been known to hum too they tend to make all kinds of strange noises

Whens the last time you cleaned out your rig? Maybe some fans are just clogged up with dust

I recently installed a new case fan and cleaned my entire case. I stress tested my GPU and it dident make that sound.

It's just wierd that the sound only shows in Dragon Age Origins, as I said, no other game or ever before have I experinced anything like it. My disc drive is not active during gameplay, as it only needs to read the disc at game start up. I have checked my fans (besides my PSU fan) and no one of them makes the humming like sound.

when I get home I will try to make a more precise description of it, clean my PSU fan and try to locate the source. but it is wierd that I can damped the sound by placing my hand on the case top :S

It's probably your GPU fan screaming "Help Me! I'm Melting!"

not rly. I have extremely good air-flow in my cabinet leaving my HD5770 under full load in Fur Mark no hotter than 47 C :)

My computer makes all sorts of sounds when playing DAO...not bad ones, but a lot of whooshes and whirring...did the same with Mass Effect 2.
I don't know enough about computers to really comment on what may be making the sound, but you're not alone...

Dragon Age Origins is a pretty system demanding game so it's quite normal for fans in your system to need to speed up during gameplay to keep everything cooled down i'm thinking it's a fan somewhere you might be on the money with the PSU exhaust fan thought if it happens only when playing a game it may be more likely your GPU. Open your case up and play and listen to where the sound comes from.

Solved the problem by removing AA. No more unnecessary load on my PSU (apparently the aa was causing full load on all my components causing resonance from fans, RAMs into the top of my case :S )

but Deathwurm, Mass Effect 2 isent an extemely demanding game? ME1 demands a better PC to run than the much optimized engine ME2 rely's on ^^

Wow... I am impressed that AA caused that.  Certainly, it put stress on your system (and expecially on your CPU, 'cause it's Dragon Age, after all)... but I am surprised it drew that much more from your PSU.  Are you sure it isn't a fan going bad on your CPU or in your ATI card?  Sounds like (no pun intended) a barring issue... which means it's gonna go out on you some day, regardless of how hard you push.

Forget the AA.  When is someone going to come up with a pink hair mod for DA2?!  :P

I should have mentioned earlier that our Computer (mid-line Inspiron from Dell) has kind of a flimsy casing...I can hear pretty much everything that goes on inside...the case keeps things from falling into the Computer's guts but that's about it. Posted Image
I'm not real great with the finer technical points when it comes to Computers...I know enough to keep it updated, clean & Virus-free, and other basic maintainance.
I experienced some sounds when playing ME1, just not as much as ME2...part of that may be because for ME1 I don't need the disc and for ME2 I do...or maybe I'm wrong. I had used the Computer enough before installing ME1 that I realized it was a bit noisy, so I never really worried too much.
I'm glad you were able to solve that problem!

its the stress on the card comming from the game. doesnt mean anything else. that is the fan kicking into top speed to keep your card's temp low. i know because i tested it with my 5 fans, 2 broke and managed to fix one and, just one fan made a big difference in my card's fan speed.
