Why don't templars care that you're a mage?

You have a magic staff.
You shoot fire.
You cast spells.
You use blood magic (some do).
You kill templars in droves.
All mages in Kirkwall are either prisoners of the circle or on the run - You have a mansion.
Complete story fail.

The first game went out of it's way to justify mages being outside the circle. At least a little of the same would have been nice.

That's hardly fair moondog. We are willing to reasonably suspend disbelief. A line or two about people keeping things quiet for you. A chance to choose -not- to use magic in the middle of the gallows or in front of templars.

You can walk straight up to the Templars and use magic and they say "Hello Serrah Hawke! derp", you can help the Templars in their quests and use magic and you can even reach a stage where you start fighting your own kind in a battle to the death.
You can't pay off peeps either because there are richer nobles in the circle.

Why not? Imagine this:Moondoggie wrote...
Because you are the games protagonist. It wouldn't be much of a game if after entering Kirkwall you are forced to go to the tower where you can't leave ever XD
You ran away from the blight. Saved your lives, lost a relative on the way. You are absolutely desperate. You go to the city and the first thing they do after seeing your fancy wand is that they throw you in the tower, lock the door and throw away the key. You'll get pissed off and will start to work on you escape. Slaying hundreds of Templars on your way out. Painting the streets with blood from exploding bodies ©, and basically fighting for your life while growing to hate the templars more and more like every mage should do. Not only would it make you role play but you'll also get plenty action.
Seriously. Why. The. Hell. Not. That might be actually awesome.

Im trying to replay DA2 now with going the oposite way I was going the first playthrough and well ... its even more hilarious seeing how anything you do or say changes anything ...
Yo Anders, I think mages should be locked up and key threw away ... "Hmm, I dont want to discuss it, but hey wanna be sex buddies?" ...

The story and gameplay have little effect upon one another. In fact, not only are the gameplay and story segregated but different elements of the story are also dealt with in isolation. Bringing together story and gameplay is the kind of 'evolution' Bioware should be chasing. Instead we get excuses and flannelling to justify a game that was clearly rushed together to make a quick buck based on the brand.

Mages are forced into the circle - NO MATTER WHAT, NO MATTER WHO!
They could at least have bothered with coming up for a reason, that Hawke is allowed freedom (like being a grey warden in DA:O) ... or have Hawke operate from inside the circle.

Because if they did you would end up in the gallows for the whole game and that would be pretty lame.

They managed to do it in BG2 where you either payed the high monetary price to be able to cast spells in the city of Athkala or fight waves of more and more powerfull mages untill they let you go because you pretty much beat the best they had. Why was it suddenly too hard in DA2. Oh yeah i forgot ... it was rushed.
