You wear robes.
You have a magic staff.
You shoot fire.
You cast spells.
You use blood magic (some do).
You kill templars in droves.
All mages in Kirkwall are either prisoners of the circle or on the run - You have a mansion.

Complete story fail.

As one of the designer's said, "just because". Sacrificed lore and story elements for gameplay.

The first thing you do in Kirkwall is either lay down a magical smackdown in the middle of the TEMPLAR PRISON FOR MAGES or watch your sister do so. I think they assumed that after that anyone who was noticing plot holes was dazed and blinded so they could just have nobody ever ask about Hawke being a mage.

Apparently your to "Awesome"! Your the "Champ Bad Kick Ass of Kirkwall. No one dares to messes with you!" Or something like that line, apparently.

Just I wonder why your sister might get "nicked?"

Yeah damn mages assumed I was working with the templars. WTF so I helped Meredith deal with some blood mages once. I'm not joining the people who want to imprison or turn me tranquil.
Writing fail FTL.

Because you are the games protagonist. It wouldn't be much of a game if after entering Kirkwall you are forced to go to the tower where you can't leave ever XD

Looks like the Templars should have gone to Specsavers.

That's hardly fair moondog. We are willing to reasonably suspend disbelief. A line or two about people keeping things quiet for you. A chance to choose -not- to use magic in the middle of the gallows or in front of templars.

The first game went out of it's way to justify mages being outside the circle. At least a little of the same would have been nice.

Because everyone is whispering, "Don't mess with this guy. He press button and something awesome happens."

You can walk straight up to the Templars and use magic and they say "Hello Serrah Hawke! derp", you can help the Templars in their quests and use magic and you can even reach a stage where you start fighting your own kind in a battle to the death.

You can't pay off peeps either because there are richer nobles in the circle.

I like running around the gallows casting spells. Oh bioware, you so crazy. That should be an easter egg, if you cast spells in the gallows it just cuts to Varric explaining how Hawke was captured by the templars and died during The Harrowing. Then Cassandra saying he's lying and then a reload of the latest save.

Why not? Imagine this:

You ran away from the blight. Saved your lives, lost a relative on the way. You are absolutely desperate. You go to the city and the first thing they do after seeing your fancy wand is that they throw you in the tower, lock the door and throw away the key. You'll get pissed off and will start to work on you escape. Slaying hundreds of Templars on your way out. Painting the streets with blood from exploding bodies ©, and basically fighting for your life while growing to hate the templars more and more like every mage should do. Not only would it make you role play but you'll also get plenty action.
Seriously. Why. The. Hell. Not. That might be actually awesome.

Yea its so hilarious that key plot rules apply ONLY in cutscenes and usually completly out of place ...

Im trying to replay DA2 now with going the oposite way I was going the first playthrough and well ... its even more hilarious seeing how anything you do or say changes anything ...

Yo Anders, I think mages should be locked up and key threw away ... "Hmm, I dont want to discuss it, but hey wanna be sex buddies?" ...

The blood magic specialisation could have been part of the plot, requiring you to commit to a darker path in the story and changing how the world reacts to you.

The story and gameplay have little effect upon one another. In fact, not only are the gameplay and story segregated but different elements of the story are also dealt with in isolation. Bringing together story and gameplay is the kind of 'evolution' Bioware should be chasing. Instead we get excuses and flannelling to justify a game that was clearly rushed together to make a quick buck based on the brand.

i mean, why do the writers even bother with plot, characters, background and everything else that makes a story believable, if they ignore the most basic fundamental pivot of the story?

Mages are forced into the circle - NO MATTER WHAT, NO MATTER WHO!

They could at least have bothered with coming up for a reason, that Hawke is allowed freedom (like being a grey warden in DA:O) ... or have Hawke operate from inside the circle.

Probably becouse they should have had to make extra content for mages where it would have been explained, and they had a deadline from EA.

Hmmm, you walk around town with Merril and Anders...but your sister is imprisoned in the circle. No one seems to care or explain how that can be the case.

Gameplay > Lore and Story elements, it's sad story of most games nowadays...well If you could ignore it. I suggest you do or it'll ruin your entertaintment for this game.

Why don't templars care that you're a mage?

Because if they did you would end up in the gallows for the whole game and that would be pretty lame.

A simple cut scene when you're seen casting spells would have been enough. Templars rush you and you either bribe templars to turn a blind eye or intimidate/fight them into leaving you be would have been enuogh.

They managed to do it in BG2 where you either payed the high monetary price to be able to cast spells in the city of Athkala or fight waves of more and more powerfull mages untill they let you go because you pretty much beat the best they had. Why was it suddenly too hard in DA2. Oh yeah i forgot ... it was rushed.
