I didn't have to fight the arishok alone in my warrior playthrough. What option do you have to pick for him to duel you?
I didn't have to solo the arishok

I'm not sure whether you can, without Fenris, who says about a duel, or Isabel coming back.

You have to earn the Arishok respect for him to offer the challenge. Also, Isabela has to return the relic.

You don't know how Qunari work. You didn't earn his respect thus he won't duel you.

Wow, really? That's pretty cool, actually. I always assumed the option just showed up no matter what.
Isabela doesn't have to return the relic to get it, but I had Fenris with me the time that she didn't come back so I'm not sure if you can get it if you don't have Fenris there AND Isabela doesn't return with the relic.

Ok I just went back and reloaded a save with those conditions (Isabela gone for good, Fenris not in party, Arishok respect earned) and didn't get the duel option (this is the same game where I got it when I had Fenris with me), so you do either need Fenris or Isabela to get it. Interesting.

No need for isabelle to have the relic (she didn't in my playthrough). Fenris was in my party though and offered the option.

He offered the duel despite no Fenris and Isabela gone. When he asked me what I should do in his situation, I said he should have the book returned so he was no longer bound to stay in KW. Then he said the book had been taken by one of my people (ironic since I only used Isabela in the mission to recover the book) and it was also my responsibility. Then he offered the "duel".

If Isabella doesn't return AND respect is earned,
My guess is that Arishok would offer a duel to a male Hawke only without Fenris' assistance, because in Qunari society women are 'priests and shopkeepers' not 'warriors'.
Fenris would call Arishok on naming a female Hawke Basalit-an, thus granting her the right to duel him regardless.

No, you do not need either of them with you to do it.
You have to earn his respect, which involves all of your dialogs and dealings with him from the very start. Be honest and honorable, and report back to him whenever something happens with the Qunari. Don't hide anything from him, and agree with him when he asks your opinions.
I dueled him on my first playthrough, then on my second he didn't give me the option. I reloaded from the point just before the viscount's son was murdered and went to talk to the Arishok before I went to my house to talk to Aveline (which I had forgotten to do on the second playthrough), had a conversation with him where I was straightforward with him about what happened, and then the duel option was there.
I have never had either Isabela or Fenris with me when I've confronted him.

Wow, I didn't know there was an option not to duel. Interesting stuff. I'm a male mage Hawke and I was honest with the Arishok though I frequently disagreed with his opinions. I didn't have Fenris in the party.

You dont need to have his respect and you dont need the fenris in your party. You just need Isabella to come back with the book they want and when they try to take her you tell them no.
