I mean maybe those runes cause him agony. I ask because his stance, the way he stands even when not doing anything. I always get the impression of someone with low back pain. I'm not just making this up, I'm a physician and an occasional low back pain sufferer myself.

I'm fairly sure he mentions several times that the etchings hurt him when he uses them, but that they're worth it.

I think he is supposed to be modeled similar to Wolverine. The etchings cause constant pain, but he has an unusually high pain tolerance.

During random party banter between Bethany and Fenris:

Bethany: Your markings...do they hurt?
Fenris: You don't want to know the answer to that.

It would also help explain his attitude and interactions with others.  Constant pain changes your outlook and personality.

I thought it was more of a PTSD thing. Using them, or being touched makes him flashback to getting them.

I think I read it somewhere (probably wikia) that the lyrium marking causing him constant pain. But I don't remember him mentioning it in any PC conversation or cut scenes. If he mentioned in party member banter, I might missed it.

Honestly,(one of?) Fenris's idle animation(s) looks like he just stepped in dog ****. It's hilarious. He looks more... paranoid and wary, than in pain to me, though. I can see how people would get pain, though, and his tattoos are supposed to make him uncomfortable.

The party members I recall that mention it are Bethany and Isabela.  Bethany asks him if they hurt (sweet girl that she is).  Isabela just says she digs men with tattoos.  :P

I remember Isabella's comment on his Tattoo, I like banters between Isabella and Fenris. I think Fen has a soft spot for Isabella and Varric, since most of their banters are light hearted, while Fenris' banters with other party members are a bit heated and serious. It makes me smile when listening to Fenris talking to Varric about card games, knowing that he's not always serious and depressing, hiding in his mansion and drinking his day off.

But the way Fenris stands, he always hunch his back, unlike other front line soldier type (Aveline and Carver) who stands tall and straight. Like previous post mentioned, that might be because he's in pain.

I always thought it was this, and maybe, that they might get sore sometimes, like if he's overused them. But mostly that if anyone touches them, it just brings back some really vivid memories of the ritual, which would be painful, but not a real, physical pain as such. But "imagined" pain can still be as bad ... But I would like to consider it something that would go away over the years, especially when he starts making friends and when he can put his slave days completely behind him.

According to the word of god, they're painful.  Linky here.

I had a feeling Hawke would probably either get punched or get threatened with getting her hands cut off.

Well, first he would flinch-- because his markings are quite painful, and doubly so when they're touched. His first instinct might be to punch someone who touched him, though he'd probably hold back if he realized it was Hawke.
Then he would brood.

Edit: It helps if I actually put in the link I suppose.

Double entrende ahoy!
Also, what worries me about Fenris is not his standing. It's his running. Or rather, his prancing.

Hawke can ask if the markings hurt in one of the conversations. I believe it's a friendship line, maybe not in the rival attitude banter. He mentions them always giving him pain. Add that to probably mainy reasons why he would believe that he can never truly escape the cage in his mind by Denarius.

LOL hmm yes I thought it was 'cause I gave him Hayder's razor and the weight on his slender frame is too much for him too bare. I keep upping his strength in the hopes he'll stop stooping.

He does step in a lot of doo-doo

Maybe he hunches cause the ground is so cold. I mean just imagine being barefoot. Merrill probably just keeps her feet warm with fire magic.

is one of them. They have quite a few mods for DA 2 out already. I'm a bit shocked.

Ohoh, no more dribble catcher or whatever that thing is. I really hate those things that stick out in front of the armor :/
