I don't remember if this is explained in the ingame codex or not, but I'm going to ask here anyways.
How do mages learn their spells? Do they study books and scrolls that contain instructions or "recipies" if you will, or are all spells just spotaneously made up on the spot? Like if you learn how to conjure fire, you can cast a fireball, when you get better at conjuring fire you can do a firestorm? Or does the particular spells require you to study, as I said from a book or scroll and such?
Oh and just thought I'd mention that I know that magic requires innate talent.
A lore question about magic.

instructions and books most likely. In Origins (Mage-Origin-Story) you can see some Mages training the use of spells. And the Spells of the "Force Mage" Specialization are taught primarily at Kirkwall (DA2-Codex).
Though some seem to be made instinctively. At least Feynriel seems to figure out his abilites on the spot.
