Bioware, can you give us a clue as to whether you intend to get a working search here and if so maybe toss in a wild ass guess as to when you think it might be showing up? The current search is useless and considering a good chunk of the people who come here are looking for answers the site is worthless to them. I only come here long enough to see if search has been fixed and then Im on my way.

If this sounds like criticism, it is, a core functionality of the site is broken. I do hope you understand that I am trying to be constructive here. Knowing nothing about building websites I cant comment on technical aspects of operating a forum but I am self employed and I know that chasing off customers that have found their way to your business is bad. Fix the search, a forum without search is broken.

I'll be another to chime in with my extreme dislike of this incredibly poor forum system. My top dislikes are:

*The worst search system I have EVER had the misfortune of using. (Can't search a specific user's posts? Can't search anything but titles only? Can't search specific time frames? Can't order your search results (by date for example)?

*The double spacing at every enter/line break used in Quick Reply. Yes, I didn't intend ANY double spacing in this post at all, anywhere. I'm using Quick Reply though, so the forum is going to stick them in despite my intentions.

*The propensity for this forum to create double/triple posts. Hit the 'Submit' button once, wait up to 20-30 seconds for your post to appear, and be surprised when 2 or 3 appear instead. Then there's the forumites who aren't aware of the possible delay for their post to appear, so they create their OWN double post thinking their original hadn't gone through. Then the board double posts their posts so we get a lovely string of posts from one user when that one user only intended to create one post.

*The inability of users to tinker the forum to their own preferences. I can't set how many posts per page to show, how many replies per page to show, whether or not I want to see avatars and/or signatures, whether or not I want to automatically subscribe to posts I reply to, whether or not I want to show posts by oldest first or newest first, etc.

Just a few of my primary forum dislikes... I do hope that this forum system is highly modifiable, which means that we will likely get better forums in time. But I just can't help but be irritated at the forums until that happens. >.<

So why did you choose to use SocialEngine for PHP? £500 off the shelf? I can see you have customised it but SocialEngine is renowned for its awful architecture underneath and its very poor performance when handling large traffic.

Really is a step in the wrong direction considering the nice design/engine used at bioware.com/neverwinter nights etc..

Whoever green-lit the use of Social Engine made a BAD mistake.

My advice? Ditch it and get a bigger budget than £500.

The sad part is that your budget could be 0 and you'd still get forums that are more functional than this and it doesn't require extra work from the community team.

I cannot imagine how many times the community team has to repeat answers to the same simple question because of a missing search function (and despite the lack of a search function, the refusal to allow Google bots to scan it to search via Google).

Dude, that's *exactly* what I say. I mean, wtf?

I've used search on these forums just fine. There's no advanced search yet so it's fairly simple for now.

It can only search items in titles. If someone didn't title their post with the exact word you're searching for, regardless of that word being used 50 times inside the post itself, your search won't find it. This is very, very common.

OK I didn't realize that but I did suspect as much.

This website is crap then :)

Actually my big annoyance is how broken the character profiles are. Slow updates and some characters never have their graphic updated.

This entire site is a complete and utter design disaster. Navigation is completely unintuitive, the fixed size is a ridiculous waste of screen real estate, and the forums are hideous. So many things are broken - hell, even the Achievement tooltips are broken, not to mention the issues with profiles not updating. It's totally obvious that the site was built piecemeal by committee with no single direction or focused design goals.

TL;DR version: the game is fantastic, but this site blows. Fix please.

I have to chime in again to rant about the update delay.

Seriously WHAT THE HELL ?!

It takes MINUTES for posts to appear (in very active thread, you can be one full page late because of this), which is something I've never, ever, ever saw anywhere.

And when the message appear, you can edit it, the changes takes minutes to count... but if you come back editing it, your previous changes ARE in the edit.

WTF ?!

If they are actually updated in the database, why aren't they displayed already updated ? Why the delay ?

Seriously, I've never heard nor see a forum with a delay between posting and displaying, and it's totally INFURIATING. Especially as one part of the forum IS updating correctly (as said, if you edit your message it IS updated in the edit box ; the "last post by" mention is correct, even though the said message isn't even visible.

God, I can't believe this site was PAID FOR...

Seriously, can the font be any smaller and harder to read? Light gray text on a slightly darker gray background? Probably the most annoying "official" forum to read since I've been using the internet in the 90's

I guess I've seen worse on some geocities personal web pages back in the day. Can you guys give us an option to change the layout? At least font size.

I take it neither of you have seen the narrow mass effect 2 forums either? It's harder to read than this one.

The search is terrible, I can't find what I want as you only allow me to search message titles. Then you block Google, so I can't even use that.
The layout and functionality of the site is way behind what you had with the old one.
The net effect of this is that to look for support or share ideas I use the Gamespot forums, because at least I can use Google.
Is there a reason you blocked Google? What does it add to the site??

A third party search function that they are too embarassed to allow because they paid for this software.

I must admit that these forums are really a pain to search through for information. Never thought I would find such unconvenient forum software these days.

How much time is necessary to fix forums they had for over a month? If you can get forum software with a logical search function for free, surely a PAID web development team could write a search function in a month.

Over 2.25 million dollars in the first week of sales but can't afford free forum software that works. Nice.

Wow, so I'm not the only one who thinks this website fails. Add the fact that we're pretty much forced to use it for DLC etc...hate.....

And for any and all forms of technical support (dangling over endless pits of flame), don't forget.
I hate the idea of being forced into anything, but disagree thoroughly with the maddening requirements for getting anything to do with the game done (don't want to complain about DLC too much cause it's somewhat free, but I still disagree with being forced to register for this, register for that...just to get to it).
I bought this game to play it, not because it's fun being forced to register for three different things and read ridiculously long ToS agreements signing your soul away to damnation before you can even get to the point where you can begin to report a problem - let alone receiving any sort of helpful reply. By then you're so loonified over no one responding rather than actually getting the game to work properly you start reading other posts that have nothing to do with anything.
Then after weeks you finally receive a response from Customer Support 'We're sorry, we cannot help, try the forums'...and that is when you orgasm and snap your disc in two.

(Edit: I feel unfairly harsh so just to clarify, the last paragraph hasn't happened to me yet)

I have to agree with the complaints in this thread. Especially about the colour scheme, I've always thought light on dark was a big no no in web design. I would have put the forum part on a totally different server to the rest of the site as well. Links on a web page are relative after all, one site can have content from many different servers without it showing.

PS: If you're stuck for a colour scheme you can use the one I made here : http://www.harvestmo...orums/index.php : LOL
