BG - I own the complete set but honestly I'll probably never get around to it.   Had it installed and played for a few hours but just couldn't get sucked in.  I don't doubt the greatness of the game and if I had played it when it came out I'd sure I'd be one of those annoying people harping on about it a decade later, but the world only spins forward.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic - 7/10 Great story, great characters, good gameplay but beginning is too damn long and difficult.
Mass Effect 1 - 8/10 Great story, great characters, unique gameplay but broken and/or tedious and game is full of glitches.
Dragon Age Origins - 7/10 Good story, great characters, good gameplay but some of the levels are just boring and very tedious while combat is too damn slow.
Mass Effect 2 - 9/10 Good story, great characters, great gameplay but scanning is very boring and few annoying glitches.
Dragon Age 2 - 8/10 Great story, great characters, great gameplay but feels rushed( which is), reused maps and inventory system for party members is too much simplified.

Did you try both BG1 and BG2 or just BG1? BG2 is actually very different from BG1 if you haven't tried the former, and might be easier to get started with. Though, I haven't played BG2 without an imported character, so I don't know how confusing it would be.

What I also find tiring is the idea that being a Baldur's Gate fan means one's views on those games are based in nostalgia. I, for instance, make it a point to replay them every year or so. I also find being dismissed as a stodgy, inflexible dinosaur clinging to the past unfair. Both sides of that divide need to let up, really. Not that you were harsh in your words. I just get tired of feeling like my thoughts are irrelevant in newer BioWare game forums; solely because I appreciate one of the company's older projects over recent releases.

Not I think your comments apply to me specifically. I do not make a habit of harping about those games. I usually only bring up them up when a topic specifically calls for their inclusion in discussion. It is easy enough to critique modern RPGs without invoking the Baldur's Gate series.

Seconding this recommendation - and it wouldn't be confusing at all. Back when I got BG1, I got frustrated with it less than half way through and quit playing. Got BG2 from a discount bin a few years after it's release, and was blown away - it had fixed all the things that troubled me in BG1, and put in a great storyline to boot.

Didn't find it confusing at all despite not having finished BG1. I DID eventually finish BG1, once (and it felt like pulling teeth), just because I wanted to take the same character through the whole series.

It amuses me that the less RPG features the game have higher the score is. Only this already says a lot about Bioware's target audience.

Currently ME2 and DA2 hold joint first place for me as I'm still feeling the love for the inclusiveness of the latter. I should note this is not my attempt at an objective rating of the games in any way. It's a rating of how much I loved them/enjoyed playing them, flaws and all.
