As petty as it sounds, what bothers me if all the ME2 LI's return is that it means the only reason the VS got such a ****ty cameo was because Bioware wanted us to hate them (and cheat on them if romanced). Makes me somewhat annoyed.

Boy I am glad LOTSB was made.

Casey Hudson DID say he expected a lot of people to cheat - that cheeky devil.

But there again, who said we're going to have a permanent squad in ME3 at all? BioWare always wanted to have a shooter...

With that attitude, why are you still here?

Go variable some variables instead of relentlessly persecuting common sense.

Actually, the VS was excluded to guarantee that (s)he'd be present in ME3, so we can assume that the VS will be quite integral to the plot.  Also, there were still several hints against cheating, such as the picture on Shep's desk, the apologetic email, and warnings from the devs themselves.

Boy I am glad LOTSB was made.

Aren't we all?

I sort of agree with Zulu on this one.

I fail to see how you can mistake "Garrus is confirmed as a squadmate in ME3" for "Garrus is confirmed as a temporary squadmate in a single mission in ME3". There's a gigantic leap of logic there, just the kind of nonsense I've come to expect from Zulu.

The GI article says "playeable to some extent".

But there again, who said we're going to have a permanent squad in ME3 at all? BioWare always wanted to have a shooter...

Listen to this man. I am completely confident that Garrus, Liara, and Ashley or Kaidan will only appear for one mission at the start, at which point they will clearly, clearly be replaced by everyone's favorite character: Jacob.

He doesn't even have any variables! Or he has so many that we can't possibly comprehend him! A new Jacob for every variable. A Jacob in every pot! Four more years of Jacob!

@Saph: You forget that Tali is failcakes as a leader. It is pointed out repeatedly in-game.

Which means what? She doesn't have to go back to lead her people as an Admiral. She could get promoted though. It could be any number of reasons. The point is, Bioware left themselves a lot of options in that area.

Frankly though, since when has poor leadership ever stopped an aristocratic girl like Tali from finding her way into high places?

I agree with this. Bioware gave themselves an out with every character for a reason. Now that we know Garrus can return, others might as well. That doesn't mean all of them will. Which characters return is probably going to be influenced by a combination of factors: popularity being one, but storytelling will also play a large role. Tali becoming a Quarian leader would be a growth of that character (the emphasis on her being a poor one only makes her eventual leadership more likely, in my mind).
We could be looking at a large potential cast of squadmates for the next game, but we shouldn't jump to conclusions. Some of them might only be available part of the game. As an example, Liara might act as the Shadowbroker for the first act, but join the Normandy in the second (for any number of plot related reasons). Tali might be on the Normandy for part of the game, but then leave the Normandy to become a leader when/if Shep becomes embroiled with the Quarian/Geth conflict. We just don't know. I think Tali's popularity points to her being a squadmate, but we honestly just don't know yet. (fingers crossed).

Yes because the ME2 LI's was sooo much more compelling. And not because the ME1's li's were either acting like a-holesin their one scene, or were cold and distant.

True. I know that they're probably just using the term for the sake of convenience, but I don't like that they classify it as "cheating." Unless they're training a generation of gamer girls to view "I'm seeing other women, I don't really know who either of us are anymore, maybe someday in the future... I don't know." as an indication that "we are still in a relationship."

If so... clever.

To be honest, I did sort of find ME1's options a little boring.

This. Ashley and Kaidan were okay, and Kaidan was one of my favorites in the original.

But all of the Mass Effect characters rank lower for me than than the Mass Effect 2 ones (Yes, even Wrex)

Actually, Jacob got 2 variables.

I tend to agree, with the sole exception of Wrex. I'm not even sure what it is about that ruddy Krogan, but he's the only one out of the original ME squad that I'd place on the same level, character-wise, as the ME2 squad.

But see. That's what bothers me, if 6/10 of the ME2 cast were gonna return anyway, surely they could atleast make the VS (and Liara's, but that was fixed) scene better or give more slightly more screentime.

Wrex gets actual character development without you having to have sex with him.

There's that.

Well yes recruiting the ME2 squaddies was sorta like a Magnificent Seven (or Seven Samurai) montage - that said I dug how they handled Liara (with LotSB), Garrus, Tali, and Wrex in ME2.

Oh, I hear ya, and I hope there's some awesome Kaishley-ness in ME3 to make up for that Horizon what-th-ef*ckery.

Also, this merits re-quoting:

I think it's possible that they were actually not sure how many squadmates were coming back - they were sort of doing a test... see how many squadmates die on average, see how often squadmates get romanced. It's possible the less popular romance characters will just get cameo'd, so you can romance them but they won't be on your... hurk.... blarg... kkkukkkkukkk

Yeah. Basically one of the main reasons I romanced Garrus was so I could get more dialogue with him. Which is... actually something that has happend to me in real life.
