A (semi) quick review.  I'm posting in this forum as I will discuss spoilers.  And yes I'm creating a new topic for my quick thoughts as though they are so much more valid than anyone else’s.  I'm narcissistic that way, like about every other post on these forums!  Seriously though I've read a few of the reviews here and wanted to add my take on the good with the bad.

There's a lot to love in DA2, but for every love there seems an anchor around its neck: (BEWARE SPOILERS BELOW)

LOVED the inclusion of Hawke's family which made for some great emotional ties.  (All that remains, seriously, the writer for that quest should seek counseling, but well done.)
DISLIKED how little interaction there seemed to be with your family after ACT1.  I hated that I couldn't go visit Bethany, and the flippant options I had for greeting her at the end of ACT2 when I was genuinely happy to see her again.

LOVED the cleaner look of the art design, the vistas of Kirkwall
DISLIKED the darkspawn redesign and LOATHED the JRPG style two handed swords.

LOVED the stories of many of the quests, some genuinely great thought provoking quests in there
DISLIKED how often my only option was CRUSH MY ENEMIES!  SEE THEM DRIVEN BEFORE ME!  In origins I seemed to have so many more options on how to handle these situations.

LOVED many of the new companions, and that they all had their own haunt, thought this was just a very nice storytelling mechanic and made them seem real to me, especially over the year span.
DISLIKED how little there seemed to say to them.  There was only a few conversations per companion, would have loved more detail and information here.
SIDE NOTE Not really a complaint and I understand content was limited, but would have enjoyed more quests per companion, but that’s more of a tertiary comment.

LOVED the shock and awe of Anders’ act. I still sided with the mages but booted him out, I was genuinely disgusted by his actions. Bravo to the writing team for eliciting emotion here,
DISLIKED the ending of the game with almost no mention of what happened to my companions.

LIKED Hawke’s voice. I connected with Hawke to a much greater degree than I ever did Shepard.
DISLIKED the paraphrase wheel and voiced prot, but I’ve probably voiced that complaint too many times by now, and I realize there are a whole group of folks who like this feature, I’m just not one of them.

LIKED the combat well enough, but I’ve never really played Bioware games or rpgs for that matter for combat. One forum poster back when Origins was released made the comment “I would love this game if combat was decided via bouts of hangman.” Couldn’t agree more.
DISLIKED the skill trees, particularly the lack of non-combat skills like persuade and intimidate. I disliked not having the options to influence people through special conversation options, and ME has shown that needn’t be peculiar to the old dialogue trees.

LIKED the overall story, was fun to see Hawke’s rise to power and resolution over the time period, I would like to see Bioware try this again, telling a story over time.
DISLIKED well, the much maligned reused maps, what appears to be a rushed development cycle. As much as I really dislike the Fable games, I did enjoy the general effect of your actions in Fable 2 and how the town in general changed based upon your actions, or the growing of a new town. That would have been a nice touch so long as the storytelling aspects aren’t neglected. I NEVER want to see storytelling neglected, it’s the main reason I play Bioware games.

LOVED the concept of the friendship/rivalry system and think this is a vast improvement over Origins approval system which was already an improvement over previous Bioware games.
DISLIKED how inconsistent it seemed to me. For example I have no doubt Morrigan and Sten would have been rivals to me in DAO, but in DA2 I rather gave up on trying to influence rivalry as too many of my choices seemed to result in friendship swings, so just went down that path which was easier. I realize I could try to be more articulate here but am trying to be brief.

BOTTOM LINE there’s a lot to love about DA2, and a lot of room for improvement. Most of the complaints it seems to me would have been resolved by a longer gestation period. As it is DAO looms very large in my mind, with DA2 fitting securely in its shadow. The reused maps, the truncated options, and the unsatisfactory ending all equal a lesser game. To me at least. I do lament the absence of a game like DAO being in development at Bioware (that we know of) but that’s another post entirely. Sorry for the lengthy post, just figured I’d add my two cents to the fray.

Probably but more likely from the 'I don't like' side than the 'I like side'.  In most cases reviews are accepted if they do two things this one did.  a) Be reasonable and logical bout things bioth good and bad and B) Actually post the good with the bad.  (Also the lack of foolish "I'm a reviewer!" rhetoric is nice.)

Yeah a lot of the reviews that rate the game zero or a 10 can't exactly be taken seriously.  I've never played a game that I truly think I would rate a zero or a ten.  Every game has something redeeming even if its as simple as it starts up and runs the intro screen properly, just as every game no matter how close to perfect has some drawbacks.  For rpgs, the closest game to perfection I think I've ever played was Ultima 7, which had a few bugs, some tedious inventory managements, and a couple annoying game mechanics.

I have only played a single 10 rating game in my opinion.... and that was Super Mario Brothers 3.

Good review otherwise. Well phrased and thought out.

Heh, I would admitedly have a tough time thinking of a flaw in Super Mario Bros 3. Of course I'd also have an impossible time divorcing child-hood nostalgia from it as well.

While I disagree with one or two things I think this is one of the better reviews I've seen.

I agree with practically everything said, a good review of the game in my opinion.

I've just finished the game. My chief complain is the lack of an ending to the story. Oh well, I guess expansions/DLC will do the job.

Actually I agree with this review. I loved this game. I played through as a rogue Hawke. Rogue = thief, liar, cheat, and sh*t, but with a sense of honor and loyalty. Like I gave the game 8.5. ME2 was to me a 9.5. In my game Hawke stood by her man (Anders), and ran off with him after the final battle.

The way Bethany greeted Hawke on her first meeting as a Warden was pretty harsh. Hence the flippant greetings when she returned. However, regarding how this affects one's handling of the Chantry and Circle remember now Bethany is not an Apostate. She is a Grey Warden.

I wish there was more interaction available between party members, but then again we weren't outside of town in a camp like in DA:O. We all had our own place of residence in Kirkwall and if you think about selecting your party as hoofing it to their homes or tavern to get them would have made a lot of interaction a bit difficult. Because of this I think there should have been some more Hawke alone stuff -- instead you ended up going to Lowtown to grab Varric and Darktown to grab Anders to go see the reverend mother just in case all hell broke loose. Yet some interaction when in party would have been nice. Yet it didn't take away from the story.

Family: Mom? Hello? Mom? (Hums)..................

I agree with the too much "CRUSH MY ENEMIES! SEE THEM DRIVEN BEFORE ME!" I think one more point per level would have been nice to stick into cunning so you could trigger dialogue options that weren't ordinarily there. Even one where you could have talked your way out of the final boss battle if you had cunning high enough! Give the bulk of experience points for completing the quests and reduce the amount for combat. Like in ME1 with enough points you could talk Saren into shooting himself and eliminating half the final battle.

What is it with Elves and blood magic?

I do have to say my favorite character in the game was Varric. Followed by Aveline.

So overall I tend to agree with the OP here. Very good game 8.5. With a few tweaks (like not reusing areas as often) it could have been great (9.5). I hope the devs read this thread because the criticism has been done without the hating. I don't want to see a return to the original Baldur's Gate type. I would like to see it take more from ME2. And yes, I'd like to see more side quests available even though my playthrough was 49 hrs which is very healthy in length for a RPG like this.

Perhaps there will be some DLC for this to take place during or after. I would like to see some more Flemeth or Morrigan, whom Hawke would not know except that she had been involved with the victory over the blight.

What do you mean? Why do they fear it or why do they use it?

I'm not sure exactly which context is being used here either, but I will say it was a little shocking how prevelant blood magic, abominations, and demons were in DA2 given how rare they seemed in DAO.  (Minus the broken circle quest of course, but that made perfect story sense.)  In DA2 blood magic had a rather ubiquitous presence.
