I'm a sucker for Fenris. On my first playthrough, I wasn't sure if I wanted to romance him or Anders, but eventually Anders was really just too whiny and I decided to romance Fenris. Except that never happened. So, I started a second playthrough (without actually finishing my first one...)
I'm doing everything for this broody, sessy elf. Dissing mages (even when it makes me feel like a total... meanieface [yeah swearing]), and... well yeah.
But I just can't get the damn man to sleep with me [currently in Act 2].
He's at 100% friend, I've given him the book, done Questioning Beliefs, and I finished Bitter Pill (I let him do what he wished with Hadrianna and the elf girl is working in my estate). I've flirted with him at every possible chance.
The only thing I can think of is that me flirting with Isabela once screwed something up. And I mean once. When she wanted to have 'girly fun,' I was like 'No thanks.' Come to think of it, that took place directly after I finished Bitter Pill (after Fenris apologized, Isabela came to visit the next time I visited my estate at night).
Could that have screwed me over (no pun intended)? I'm an idiot who never learns to keep saves at important intervals, so the latest save I have is in Sundermount on Merrill's recruitment quest, and I'd really not like to have to play through most of Act 1 a third time so soon.
I appreciate any help!

You might have been able to push her off earlier by talking to her in the hanged man. She won't have a quest in her log but will ask you about your interest in someone else. That might have saved you some trouble via approval.

The flirting, you mean? I didn't do that for approval, I just slipped up.

Did he wear red ribbon on his right wrist and Hawke Family crest on his left hip?

If he wear that, meaning Romance is open, you have to wait for him to comeback to your estate at night. If he doesn't wear it after the Bitter Pill, it means the romance is over, you probably screw it up earlier. Mostly likely with Isabella.

Romance with Fenris is very subtle, I have to reply Act 2 to get it right. The game don't tell me which romance is open which is closed. LI don't force you to pick if you have 2 romance open.

I thought that he only wears the ribbon and crest after you spend the night with him. At least, that's what I read on other forums...

From what I heard, if you do Bitter Pill quest before questioning belief, he will not spend the night with you when he visit your estate after the Bitter Pill quest. But he'll wear the ribbon stuff, and come back in a later date.

I was in a very similar situation like you, I maxed him out 100% friendship, gave him the book, done his personal question, and he came visit, and stormed off without glowing kiss and angry sex. That means the romance is closed.

It could be confusing, because I also heard people sleep with isabella still get Fenris. But I'm pretty sure, just to be on the save side, if you sleep with other LI, Fenris romance is closed on most cases. Even if he "break up" with you between Act 2 and Act 3, if you rebound with Anders, his romance is over.

I did Questioning Beliefs before Bitter Pill though.

Ugh... I guess this means I have to go back to my Sundermount save.

I just wish I could get a definitive answer on this. I've read about so many people who sleep with multiple people before sleeping with Fenris, yet I send a flirtatious glance Isabela's way and he dons a chastity belt. The utter frustration of it all...

I know, its ao annoying and silly, I just played it safe and didnt flirt with anyone, on my 2nd playthrough had that issue (did everything the same as on my first but didnt flirt with Isabela) as already stated and when i managed to reload I was like phew, then later on, Merrill came to the estate and tried to initiate something and i was like no!

Fenris would be the fickle one though :?

I end up replay from the Year 4 save to get Fenris right LOL. the thing we do for polygon love.

Just wait you heard Fen talking about how he broke up with you in a banter. And looks like when he comes back in Act 3, the story implies Hawke actually waited Fenris for 3 years, after that 1 night...

Before you do that, try going to Hawke's home at night, and see if the scene triggers.  I was completely confused when he just left after A Bitter Pill, but a little while later I went into my estate at night and the magic happened.

Fenris is a difficult man to woo.

Well, I'm probably going to take a bit of a break before I pick up on my Sundermount save. Maybe work on some art or something.

But thank you for all your help.
Let's just hope that next time around BioWare will make it known that you shouldn't flirt with anyone to romance someone because this is just annoying.

I've been checking constantly. Granted, I've only done two quests, but I don't want to have to put in another two hours only to find that I really did mess up.

You want questioning beliefs before bitter pill.

Essencially, if you've got the rivalry or friendship triggered (can see in their skill trees if one is hilighted) then the relationship is at 50% and the romance can trigger.

On a side note, I've been able to flirt all day in act1. In act 2 if you flirt with anyone else at all, Fen wont be open to a romance. He's picky.

Avaline, Seb, and Varric seem to be excluded in this. B)

You can try talking to Isabela in act 2 in the hang man while she doesn't have a quest over her head. That may have her question if you are interested in someone else. It would stop her from being able to show up at your estate.

So she can show up at my estate even after I've denied her?
Hm.
Either way, it's something to try.

**Edit

Isabela had nothing to say to me, so I'm going back to the Sundermount save. -sigh- Just got to remember that Fenris is worth it.

Don't worry, I think I've finally learned my lesson about saving. You'd think my millions of other RPG playthroughs would've taught me that. >.<

Hope I can help, in act 2 you must only flirt with him and no sleep with other companion ( after you get the bed scene you can flirt others but no sleep), now depending on your friend or rival points you will be able to make question belief and then bitter pill ( and u will get bed scene here, if u flirted him, when he comes to your house) o viceversa u will make 1st the quest and then the question belief ( and u will get an altertanive bed scene when u return home) as far as i know i did manage to get both ( in 2 playtroughs) and have no problems to get him as my Hawks lover, so if u did all alright maybe it just bugged =(

Flirting with Izzy is the thing that mixed up the romance with Fenris. The order of Questioning Beliefs and Bitter Pill isn't that important (although it plays out slightly different in different order).
