See, here's the part that makes no sense - the part you highlighted.

Why would a man who is so opposed to how mages are treated EVER help Templars - particularly THESE Templars - slaughter an entire Circle full of them?

There are plenty of instances in the game, where you can 1.) Choose an option that basically says "Theres gotta be a better way.". I know for sure that you get that option when speaking to Cullen. 2.) Where mages do pretty horrible things. Gascard and Quentin (responsible for Leandras death), the Tevinters, Idunna, Tarohne, Decimus, Grace, two of the three mages you have to hunt down in act 3, ect

Its perfectly reasonable that Anders might start to see that maybe mages shouldn't have the total freedom from the templars that he previously wanted. That a Mage Hawke working with the Templars may be the best chance that mages have at being shown mercy (like you can with Alain).

Yes, possible.

But 5 minutes after he destroys the Chantry to ensure that mages HAVE to fight?

I don't buy it.

Considering Justice assumed direct control and forced him to blow up the Chantry...

And where was Justice when Anders is killing mages? taking a nap?

Probably thinking that helping the templars was the best way to cull the slew of demons possesing mages, and the best way to restore order to the city... meaning minimal innocent casualties.

No way. Justice became fixated on the freedom of mages. His primary focus isn't stopping the spread of demons, helping others, or anything of that nature... also, Anders was definitely conscious of the plan to destroy the Chantry. Everything he said in DA2 confirms that he values mage freedom over a few innocent lives...

The way I see it, it's not 100% beyond the realm of possibility that Anders forced Justice into a corner of his mind for a while and tried to reclaim his humanity by helping the Templars. Although... even as I type that it sounds very wrong. Anders, helping Templars... hm.

Well, I'm just saying it's not totally impossible even if it is highly unlikely.

Yes, but ..  . even with all those demons doing that, he still thought mages should be free, enough so that he blew up the Chantry.

And the City needed order because . . .he blew up the Chantry.

So - I'm still not seeing it.

Mhm. I get it that you can't see this happening.

This'll keep on going back and forth forever. Theres no point in continuing on. XD

So... I'm going to stop trying to change peoples minds about the possibility of this. I originally posted in this thread trying to help people who might be looking for a way to get a Friendship Romance Anders to side with the Templars in the end. I have done that.

Oh, I don't blame you for this.

I blame BW for making such an unrealistic thing happen.

But hey - if people enjoy it - more power to them.

Anders won't ever side with the templars.

Ah wait just saw that rivalry thing. Don't understand it but oh well.

I don't get this whole rivalry thing tbh. If you constantly disagree with people you are more likely to convince them?

Unlikely.

I dont agree with that statement! =P

Hm...

I think Ive done this.

If I remember right, I was full friendship with Anders by supporting the mages (cant remember if my Hawke was romanced with him, but I think she was a mage).

Anders blows up the Chantry.

Hawke is in shock, tells Anders that hes a murderer.

Hawke chooses to side with the Templars after hearing out both sides. Basically lets you take the "We need to help the Templars to restore order as quickly as possible." route.

Hawke asks the group what they should do with Anders.

Hawke asks Anders to fight with the Templars and he agrees.

I'm like 99% sure that this is what happend. I remember Warden Carver being shocked that his mage sister was helping the Templars. I remember telling him that it was for the people of the city, not for the templars cause.

Your game is bugged if you got this scenario.

Anders will not side with the templars unless he is fully rivaled and you get him to admit he was wrong.  This is confirmed upthread by Jennifer Hepler, the Dev who wrote him.

Whether he must be romanced or not, I am unsure.  I've never been able to bring myself to do that in the game.

If friended, max or not, and you let him live and choose Templar side, he shouldn't even be selectable on your party screen because he will confront you in the gallows, have a brief convo and then fight you.

I can see rivalry being the only way to do it.  As a friend you continually reinforce his narrow world view.  As a rival you challenge his beliefs, and make him think outside the box.  Depending on the RP in your head this can make perfect sense.  I learn more from debate with others of different viewpoints than with those who agree with me.  Or it can be completely whacked if you perceive your character dislikes him and has nothing but contempt for his views.  In which case, why would Hawke's opinion matter enough to Anders to get him to change his mind?

Both are valid viewpoints btw.

So do you have to romance him? Or does the Rivalry bar only count? Cause I can't tell whether I can max out his rivalry or if I also have to pursue a romance with him, which I don't want to do

I have only once managed to fully rival Anders and this was not as a romance. I've tried getting him to side with the Templars on this playthrough and he refuses. My Hawke is a mage who has consistently told him that he was wrong to merge with Justice and had the confrontation in Act 3 when Justice tells her to clear off. However, in Act 3 she did side with Orsino at the beginning and worked against Meredith until the bomb went off. I don't know if this made any difference.

However, I only discovered recently that I did not have the most recent patch in place (I had problems when getting the Exiled Prince approved as my password had changed since I orignally registered the game, so I had to uninstall the entire game, re-register, and then it worked, but for some reason the 1.03 patch didn't update as I thought and I only realised this when I came to install the later DLCs). So whilst Last Straw was played after the patch was installed, the earlier parts of the game were without it. I believe someone stated that if you have gone past the Justice quest in Act 3 without the patch, then there will be a flag or something missing from Last Straw. So for anyone trying to get the Anders sides with the Templars ending, you need the 1.03 patch in place from at least the beginning of Act 3, fully rivalled and to have always told him he was wrong to merge with Justice (which I have found is the only way to get him to full rivalry anyway).

Im confused, I want to spare anders and side with the templars to get the achievement for vicount. but Im not doing it for their sake since I prefer mages. through my first playthrough all the mages died and anders lived. I didn't like it since I didnt become vicount and so many mages turned into monsters and blood magers.
