So I bought a new pc to run windows 7 over christmas and quickly decided to install NWN 2, along with MotB and SoZ. I legally purchased all these games already, but forgot to write down the key for SoZ, since it was a download. I knew i could just look up the key on nwncdkey.ini on my old pc, but it was unavailable to me at the time, and i mainly wanted to replay the OC with my improved machine (oooh, shadows on). So i quickly found one of the cd keys people post online for whatever reason.
After finishing the OC, I wanted to play online again. I obtained MY SoZ cd key and tried to change the key on nwncdkey.ini for my new machine. It wouldn't let me save it there, so i saved a new copy on the desktop, removed the original nwncdkey.ini from its location and replaced it with the new nwncdkey.ini. I still get the error message: "your cd key is unauthorized"
Is there a way to fix this without having to reinstall the game?
Thanks

look for nwncdkey.ini in your program files folder for the app.

ok, thanks. A little follow up question: how do i fix the aforementioned problem?
And as I said, I had found nwncdkey.ini, but it wouldn't let me overwrite the file with the correct cd keys.

Permission problem perhaps, you should just be able to edit the ini file, it's just a text file. I am assuming you are trying to change the file in /program files/atari/neverwinter nights 2/
When you start notepad, do it via start menu and right click it to run in administrative mode. This gives you higher privleges, other option is to start up windings using an administrative account that can change things in your program files folder.
Other than that, make sure it's formatted correctly, if all else fails you might have to reinstall, but that tends to fix long standing issues, corrupt files and other wonkiness, so it's good to do periodically anyway.

I suppose I will have to reinstall it then, as I didn't think to open the nwncdkey.ini file as an admin, and had to delete the original in order to change it.
Good to know for future reference though.

On this topic, I bought the game through steam and played it on my gf's desktop on my steam account. I downloaded it to her computer and then she decides she wants to play. buy her another copy through steam, but every time we try to multiplayer it gives us an error message that we are using the same CD key. It is very frustrating that it keeps coming up after I uninstalled everything. I cant the nwncdkey.ini on steam so I cant figure out how to change it. its NWN2 platinum if that helps

Thank you so much!
My problem was that I was looking in the Steam files, not my documents. so all my confusion and despair was a simple fix =/
