Is this quest bugged (along with so many other things in this game)?  It's just sitting on top of its perch, hurling fireballs at my party.  I'm sure I've killed all the adds.

And why the hell are there so many freakin' dragons around?!  I thought they were supposed to be rare.  You can't throw a rock in any given direction in this game without hitting a damn dragon.

You should try hitting it with ranged attacks.

And dragons live in large groups. If you see one, there are likely many nearby. It's especially true with high dragons.

twas what everyone thought but their population is on the rise again hence dragon age.
also make sure all of the smaller ones are dead and hit it with ranged attacks.

The game's not allowing me to target it with ranged attacks while it's on its perch. Must be a bug--I can target it with ranged attacks while it's on the same level as my party.

I hate to start over--it already took me 20 minutes to get this far!

Weird--I tried again, same thing happened: couldn't target it with ranged attacks on its perch, and it just got stuck in fireball mode. I said "I'll try one more time and if it doesn't work, I'm through with it," and the third time, everything worked as it should.

So, weird glitch of some kind.

The Bone Pit is a large area. If the HD is just sitting there and you cannot target it, run around the edge of the pit. You will probably find spawns waiting to be discovered. Once they are gone, you should be be able to target the HD.

I'm having a devil of a time killing this thing even on normal. Its fireballs just destroy my party, especially after it has 50% health. There doesn't seem to be much I can do about it. Even after I having killed all the dragonkin and can target it again on the perch, I throw everything I have at it and it just wipes me out with fireballs. :/

Once you kill all the adds - he doesn't shoot fireballs anymore, he flies down and allows you to attack normally. If he didn't, it would be impossible to solo him as melee class.

Go back to town. Buy/order fire warding runes. Equip fire warding runes in your and your companion amors. Have whatever warrior you have switch on any damage resistantance or fire resistance abilities they have. If you have aveline and she has the body guard skil, put it on your most squishy character. If you have any fire resitance rings/belts/amulets stored for some reason, put those on. It is possible to rack up massive resistance.

Was a good battle this, took me about 10 mins to finish him, fully equipped with fire warding runes and frost rune attack, quite a few stamina ,health and revival potions do the trick :)

took me 1h30 to kill him in hard difficulty at my first try.... having 3 melee characters doesn't help, i moved them everytime the dragon was moving a finger to avoid the hit, i didn't came prepared as i should have been, i wasn't expecting this monster to be in here especialy at my level... why did i go here at the very begining of act3, i'm glad i survived without reloading for my first encounter.
I must have spent 80% in pause mod  XD

this is a bit lame, u can not target the dragon until the chicken dragons are down. after that you can attack him and he will come down eventually.

this battle is very difficult i making my 1st playthrough on nightmare and I nad to turn the difficulty down to get pat the HD diffinatly need fire warding ruins and a balanced party to beat it on nightmare swors shield warier using taunt and threat increasing talents are a must threat reducing talents by rogues and mages a barrier spell max heal potions and a healer maybe some damage potions on night mare this fight is going to take everything you got when its on the pearch I could not doge the fire balls fire resistance is key since you can't avoid the damage keep the team spread ou so that only person gets hit

It's NOT a glitch. If you can't target it, that means that there are still dragonling/dragon spawns you haven't finished killing.

Read the game title: "Dragon Age"! They don't name this game the age of dragons for no reason!   I really had to laugh out loud. But in all seriousness, I had this wonder from the very beginning of DA:O, why name it Dragon Age, after reading some Codex and a little history on Wiki about the lore of this land.  It does say somewhere that dragons pretty much died out like dinosaurs, and any sighting of dragon would be very unusual (like seeing UFO).

I think the only real dragon sighting in DA:O was the Cultist ruin where Andraste Ash is. Flemmeth and Archdemon don't count.  But I love them dragons in DA2, easy to fight, if they don't decide to exploit some bugs that is.

I think in my case it was a glitch, since I had killed all the adds.  Believe me, I searched that whole area thoroughly, several times, just to make sure there was no one left around.  After about 10 minutes running around, getting pelted by fireballs, but being unable to respond, I just redid the fight.  The same thing happened again--no more adds, but the dragon just gets stuck in fireball mode.  When I tried it one more time, everything worked fine.  So I think whatever triggers the dragon to come back down after all the dragonlings, etc. are killed wasn't kicking in properly the first 2 times I tried it.  Fortunately, it all worked out the 3rd time.

In one playthrough, I found Merril could target it and they would sit there exchanging shots not having any significant effect on each other. When I broke Merril away from that the dragon came back down to fight.

That's what I'm sayin'!   Maybe I understood it wrong, but I thought the Dragon Age had been named because the dragon that was seen was so rare and was viewed as a sign, not because of a dragon population explosion!

Not counting Flemeth or the Archdemon (or the drakes), there's only two in DA:O, and only one (not counting the Queen of the Blackmarsh) in DA:A.  There are plenty of dragonlings, though, so I guess the dragons were on the verge of a population explosion, after all!:D

I am on PC, and the High Dragon fight in the bone pit worked just fine for me. I would recommend a tank, rogue, healer, and another ranged character(either Varric, Sebastien, or one of the mages).

And why the hell are there so many freakin' dragons around?! I thought they were supposed to be rare. You can't throw a rock in any given direction in this game without hitting a damn dragon.

My guess is the dragon is like the Galapagos Tortoise. The Tortoise is considered endangered, even though the female lays hundreds of eggs at a time. However, out of those hundreds, less than 5 will see adulthood. Likewise, Most dragonlings are killed by wandering adventurers, and those that live long enough to become high dragons become vengeful of those who slaughtered their siblings, and eat any human they see.

Don't forget all those dragonling youg'uns appearing in a number of different places all over Ferelden (and in DA2, in the Free Marches, too). All those must have been born just recently, or I would think they would have been much larger.  Probably not much older than hatchlings.(That indicates to me there are Dragons out there somewhere breeding.) If not for their bad luck of running into the Warden's group all those couple of dozen dragonlings would have eventually grown into full size dragons. It seems to me that, although rare, for some reason, the dragons do indeed appear to be making a come back. Could be part of what Sandal meant when he said about  ALL the magic coming back. The dragons could be a part of that magic.
