So I posted this in the Sony forum, but I guess there's more DA activity over here (for obvious reasons :) ), so I'll give it a go:

I'm to the point in Act 1 where I've unlocked "Friends In Low
Places".  I've also completed *all* other side/secondary/companion
quests.  I'm playing on Normal, for what it's worth. I've
tried to do EVERYTHING to get more gold.  I've used Rune of Fortune on
multiple items, equiped accessories that make enemies drop more gold or
better items, I've even tried extorting people as the chance arises,
barring any negative effects it might have on my Friendship/Rivalry
(going for a "good" playthru). But
try as I might, and sell what I can, buying the best only when
necessary and trying to make it through without spending too much, I've
done fairly well in most battles, yet I still only have about 6 gold
left.  Sure, there are a few potions, poisons, etc. I could have lived
without, but I find it hard to believe I would have made it this far
without the very few extras I have left in my inventory So,
now I've received the offer from Dougal to pay my way into the Deep
Roads Expedition in exchange for paying him back double.  Now I'm
wondering: ***Has
anyone been able to both kick some serious butt without getting their
butt kicked AND pay the 50 gold coin **without** accepting his offer? I'm
just wondering if maybe the only way to do it is either on an easier
setting or maybe a second playthru where you start with something in
your inventory (not sure if this is the case, just going off Mass Effect
1/2).

I did all the quests, sold a lot of stuff and hardly bought anything and I had well over 70 Sovereigns by the time I was done.

I didn't buy anything until I had more than 50 sovergns. But that won't help you now.

You'll have more than enough money for those in Act 2.

Just go out there and grind and grind until you get the 50, does not take that long.

I don't know. Played it three times and I had way more than 50 gold each time.

Just sell stuff and....that's about it. There's only a few things worth buying in Act 1 anyway. The armor upgrades for the companions and a few tomes of skill/attributes. Other than that, there's no reason to buy anything.

Worse comes to worse, agree to the dwarf's plan to have him fund it. It won't cost you a dime then.

Maybe we're playing different games.  There's no where to "grind" in Act 1.

I haven't actually started the Deep Roads Expedition yet, so unless there's a free-for-all grindfest down there....

There's plenty of cash and not a ton of stuff to buy if you don't go wild in the Black Emporium.

Plus, there is the guy who will loan you the 50 if you do blow all your cash.

WITHOUT GIVING AWAY TOO MUCH PLEASE ANSWER:

If I take his 50G, I have to pay him back, right?  Or is there some way around that later?

Funny thing about loans:  you have to pay them back.  With interest.

Yeah, I had around 70 or so by the end of act 1, and that's after buying all the stat boost stuff. Didn't do anything special. Just did all the side quests, sold off all the off-class equipment I picked up (as well as anything I'd 'outgrown'. I didn't buy much of anything else besides the backpacks and companion armor upgrades either.

I dunno.  I felt like I needed to upgrade my weapon and some armor, but maybe it was just getting my tactics right.

Now I'm killing it, but I'm also broke.  Hmm.  Might start a new playthru...

Don't know he's just the deus ex machina they have in case you can't find the 50gp or waste it all on hookers and blow.

So can someone please clearly answer: DO YOU HAVE TO PAY IT BACK OR NOT?

I found that between DLC equipment (sig. edition items, that sort of thing) and armor drops/rewards I didn't really have to buy any gear for myself in act 1.  That changed in act 2 pretty quickly, but at that point I had a little more cash.

I didn't find it very difficult... I did all the side quests and secondary quests, looted every fallen enemy and opened all the chests and crates I could (though for some reason neither of the rogues I like to lug around can open a standard chest, so I missed a lot of those), sold all my junk and the majority of the armor/weapons I picked up unless I wanted to equip it or save it until a character had the right stats, and still bought quite a lot of stuff... ended up with 58 gold before I went on the expedition.

And yes, you do have to pay it back - twice as much, in fact.

THANK YOU!!  That was eating at me.  I had to know! ;)  I even have the game guide, which I do *not* use for the walkthru, but did look ahead to see if I could figure out if I really had to pay it back (hoping I might have the option to kill him or maybe he gets killed or maybe I save his life and he forgives the debt) but no dice:  it doesn't clearly state either way.

I'm thinking I'll start another playthru just for the hell of it.  This game's fun enough to warrant it and I can make a few better choices this time.

Thanks for the input guys.
