You do pay it back but at the same time you don't. It comes out of the money you made on the expedition, not your party wallet. I didn't notice my gold pool go down AT ALL, and I'm sure I would have noticed if 100 gold went bye bye.

You won't lose anything. The wiki is kind of misleading in that respect.

No problem! :) I always check online walkthroughs when I'm wondering about stuff like that, or the possible outcomes of a choice... they tend to be quite useful. I guess it could be considered cheating but I'm the world's most indecisive person, if a choice seems important I like to know what will come out of it.

What I read was that accepting his help would turn out to be less profitable than raising the money yourself but that it wouldn't mean you'd come out of the Deep Roads bankrupt or anything.

I think I made easily one hundret sovereigns in act 1. Never bought anything, never even used a potion. Because, you know it's easy. I can't believe someone even posting that he can't get the gold together with 'only spending money on the most important things' ... lol. There is nothing important enough to be bought in the whole game.

But thanks for the good laugh, I hope you are trolling OP.

So you haven't tried it? I have. :) The game says that you have paid him back, and you don't ACTUALLY lose any money doing so.

So you can earn 100gp by the end of Act I, accept the loan, and never have to actually pay a thing.

If you pay the fifty sovereigns yourself, you get them back as a last rate, from the expeditons payoff, so whether you do it or not, doesn't actually effect your finances in any way.

Yeah, I had like 100 sovereigns by the end of act 1 before I went to pay the 50 gold and go on the deep roads expedition. I only ever bought backpacks to carry more stuff, companion armor ugprades, and some more healing potions and mana potions to prepare for the deep roads expedition.

In my first playthrough I had roughly 70+ sovs at the end. That was back when I was totally new, had no idea what CCC's were and in general played like a moron. So really you don't need to buy anything at all, you'll get plenty of drops from the mobs and bosses and quests to keep you geared quite well enough.

Since that first time, I've just cheated money shamelessly through the console command given in the quote above. It would require too much management for my fun to find out the absolute best weapons and armor etc that are worth wasting money on, so I rather just buy the best and sell it when I find something better. In general, I do not like the idea in a singleplayer game that I can't be filthy rich and afford literally everything in the end. It's something of a pet peeve of mine I didn't even know I had until DAO showed me the discomfort of making endgame and STILL sadly short of all the stuff I want to have.

There's plenty of cash and not a ton of stuff to buy if you don't go wild in the Black Emporium.

Plus, there is the guy who will loan you the 50 if you do blow all your cash.

Funny thing about loans:  you have to pay them back.  With interest.

Don't know he's just the deus ex machina they have in case you can't find the 50gp or waste it all on hookers and blow.

So can someone please clearly answer: DO YOU HAVE TO PAY IT BACK OR NOT?

No you don't.  He comes back in act 2 and tries to extort you, making him free game to kill, even if you're role playing a goody-2-shoes.

You don't need a penny to go on the deep roads expedition.  So this  whole thread is much ado about nothing.

I found that doing every side quest and selling all the armour that isnt for your character will gain you more then enough, around 80-90g.

I bought absolutely nothing, not potions, not runes, not armor. I sold everything I got my hands on that didn't upgrade someone in my party, did every quest I could find, checked every body, corner, and crevice on the map and I had over 100 sovereigns before I went to Bartrand to start the Deep Roads expedition.

Playing on Hard and using no exploits.

I didn't say I didn't get enough gold.  I only said I spent it.  I made tons of gold, and there are PLENTY of things to spend it on.

And no, I'm not a troll.

But thanks for being the only DICK in the thread.

Yeah, I'm actually doing another Act 1 playthru and it seems the biggest mistake I made was buying stuff I'd eventually find anyway (or something similar).

I'm trying to not buy potions or anything (maybe a couple runes) and I'm already @ Lvl 5 or 6 w/about 18G, and I've only completed one major quest and a few side quests, so it shouldn't be hard to do.

Now I'm wondering if it'll be more profitable to take the loan ANYWAY since I don't have to pay it back, then just keep the 50G?

I think it is more profitable to take the loan, because there is no in game impact aside from an extra fight. So, by taking the loan you get more dialogue, XP, and possibly loot.

I will be taking the loan next time through, and I still think it an odd game design choice to not reward the player who did save the 50g (like with 75g at the start of act 2 or something).

idk, I just did quests and suddenly had 70g or something. I did Friends in Low Places anyways, though.

Have always had more money than I knew what to do with. Until buying Final Thought of course, holy hell that thing is spendy. Just did all the quests, and of course because I am always anal about scouring every single zone like mad I had all kinds of junk to sell :P

I cheated. I know, I'm terrible. But to be fair, first time around I did it the right way. I sold junk and did quests.

fortune rune, enemies drop better equip amulet. sold everything not needed, only bought comp armour upgrades, and had over 100g before the deep roads

only difference in taking the 50g loan is bohdan runs upto you in act 2 and tells you your loan shark is at the house instead of giving you 50g

After Act 1 I had 132 sovereigns. You buy absolutely nothing, upgrade from loot dropped, and sell everything else. Loot every single thing you can get your hands on, sacks of junk, whatever, and sell that. I saved up enough so that by Act III, I had over 300 sovereigns to spend at Black Emporium.

I heard that if you don't have enough coin and don't wish to take Dougal's loan, that extra sovereigns can be made in the docks at night, doing favours for sailors.

Did every quest, got around 80 sovreigns. Easy job, I have never failed at doing it.
