What classes/multiclasses are viable for soloing and how do you even manage this? I'm curious about it and may try it, but if the classes are really limited is it possible to play a wider range but with a limited party (2-4 members)?

There's a wealth of information about soloing to be found at the old bioware forums. The forum is closed, but you can still find use the search function: http://forums.bioware.com/ (under the 'forums' button upper left).

I never completed a solo run myself but it's very popular and can be done with lots of different classes, most popular being the fighter/mage/thief multi-class. The important thing for soloing BG1 is to know where you can find the easy-but-big quest xp early in the game, to start you off (and which people can't tell you about here, as this the no-spoiler section)..

You can solo BG2 with every class. It has been soloed with a standard fighter, a sorceror, a Beastmaster, and every multi/dualclass possible. Once you get to the really high levels, a solo character has an easier time than a party, since you'll be of a much higher level than any of your opponents.

Multi-classes like Cleric/Mage, Fighter/Mage/Thief etc are popular for beginner solos because they let you do a variety of things. Playing, say, a Fighter, can be hard if you don't know how to deal with magic. Playing a Mage is tough at low levels when you have one arrow's hit worth of XP. I've never done a solo either because it sounds a tad too much for me, but reduced party is highly viable (I've done most of my recent no-reload with a Cleric->Mage dual, Imoen dualed to mage, Khalid and Jaheira, only picking up Xan for a while, until he died, and Yeslick recently). It's a good balance if you're not up for soloing, because you still have a party, but the extra XP is definately noticable. You could try the classic Fighter/Cleric/Mage/Thief party, though with duals and multis, this isn't necessary.

I would say the ideal party size would probably be 4. That party doesn't have xp spread out thinly and can do everything that's necessary.

My ideal party, using Baldurs Gate Trilogy and starting in Candlekeep would be: protagonist: sorceror; Imoen (either keep her as a thief or dual her to mage); Kagain (awesome hitpoints and saving throws, to be replaced by Korgan in BG2); Viconia (SK'd to cleric/mage). For some added fun you can pick up Jon Irenicus (Longer Road mod) at the start of TOB. Not that you'll need him, but it's fun to watch Viccy, your sorc and Jon destroy SCS/Ascension/Tactics opponents in 3 seconds.

Again: at high levels, nothing beats a multiclassed solo character. It's so easy, it's boring. And that includes SCS and Ascension. There's just one mod where solo play is actually harder and that's Improved Anvil.

Edit: matter of fact, i think i'll start a no reload with the above mentioned party and post in the noreload thread on the BG1 forum.
