Ugly Weapons

The swords and bows in the character creator and some of the realesed films look just too big and undetailt, the swords are as always in almost every rpg worn on the back (wich as a fact allone pisses me off because people didn't and don't do that for a reason) the shortbow of the darlish elf is almost big enough to be a longbow (also artists in general seem not to know how to fire a bow because in one of the ingame videos on the main site there is an elf holding a bow having the arrow on the wrong side, a mistake done by so many games and artworks that it is almost calssic) and the daggers looking rather like ugly short swords.
Also even so it should be easily possible none of the blades have scabbards but are rather hanging in the air behind the characters.
the ambiente gain of having the weapons used crrectly (bow) and placed where they belong in a proper holder(probably all of them) insted of looking like big plastic toys hanging in mid air would be immense.

Then again, everybody in Ferelden seems to have huge hands, so maybe big swords just aren't a problem in this world!

But even if it can be done it would take weeks of my time that i can't invest in this. Besides i shouldn't have to take matters into my own hands for such a basic ambiente feature. Even in the some of the promo videos the characters wearing the swords on the side not the back.
This game is advertised as THE RPG of the decade jet the weapons, one of the key tools of the game that you will have on your screen the entire time that you'll be playing, look loveless and as if the designer rather wanted to have something finished so he could go home.
how can i take the game seoriesly as a "Dark RPG" if my Char and all the other Chars in the world are fighting with caricature weapons that magicaly fly behind their backs if they're not fighting.

I do agree with some of what you say though. I don't mind the magically suspended equipment on the character's back. It's just one fo abstractions that I can live with. But yeah, the size of some of the weapons seems off. Why not just drop daggers all together and have short swords, arming sword, longswords, spears and staffs + the blunt weapons and axes.

Then don't buy the game. I hate to sound crass, but don't paint the issue as such a game-breaking end-all factor if you aren't willing to boycott purchasing the game to prove it. I'd rather hear a polite version of this rather than complaining if you're still planning to purchase DA:O
What exactly was "unpolite" about the OP? Did I miss something?

the neglected weapon designs arn't reason enough not to play the game but that is one area where the game scored a 0/10 for me. i still hope that the story will be so good that one hour in the game i will be so captivated by it that i no longer care for "smal" things like bad gafics.

Realistic weapons mods are usually some of the first mods PC RPG's get. Followed quickly by LotR weapons mods, and Twin Drizzt Scimitars
So true. I'm gonna give it a shot when the game comes.
It might be possible to adjust teh scales in some files (I've modded same games that had such settings. You simply set the scaling factor), but it't probably not, and still wouldn't fix all the issues (since for some weapons, the overall scale is not the whole problem. Some weapons have parts of weapons that are horribly wrong in scale).
One will probably have to import the models, re-scale them and them export them back into the game. Shoudln't be hard, I've done it before. It just depends on the formats and converters and the 3D program in use.
The huge hands are a far more difficult issue....
B.T.W. - you mean bad design, not bad graphics.

I was realy exited about Dragon Age and still am but i got the first damper when i started my character creator and saw the ugly weapons on the chars.

baring in mind this is a basic character with basic equipment and its the start of the game. why would they give you an uber sword with 30+str? come on its not hard...

however even a realy good realistic weapon mod would not raise my personal score of this specific part of the game above 4/10 maybe 5/10 because it would still leave the weapons suspendet in midair on the back of the characters.
i do understand thou why they didn't put more efford into it: the buyers don't seem to care about ambiente ingame all that much and some people probably already belive that swords fly behind your back irl since its that way in (almost) all the modern games.

At the time of Oblivion's release it was still acceptable, just like the Neverwinter Nights poor AI was still acceptable when NWN was released.
But times move on, and the games need to follow. I dont mind the overall graphical detail of Dragon Age being a bit less than other games released around the same time, but this is just one of those things that really should be improved. The time of floating weapons should be over. And why arent there bowstrings? Even Medieval 2 had bowstrings and thats a strategy game.
Furthermore the game is going to be great I am sure, but this is something that also bothered me with Fable2. Putting a sword on the back is pretty much the easy way out as well. Looked completely rediculous in Fable2 when carrying a rapier over the back.
Maybe sheathes will be patched in later though. Neverwinter Nights didnt have robes, cloaks, horses and skyboxes at the release either after all.

Has anyone actually been able to do it? It sounds to me like it'd be well hard to do without some kind of crazy collision detection routine to stop the animation clipping and to take into account different weapon sizes and such. Seems a bit like climbing a mountain to get a cup of tea.
Then again, perhaps we should be ambitious!

i realy don't want to say this but: learn to read.
it was never about stats or power of the weapons but the looks and the way they are hold in place by nothing. having the (possible) option of obtaining an endgame sword at some point in the game that looks realy bizarre and unpractical (or as some people might discribe it: cool) does not seem to make things any better (even if it will give you str+30 or some other realy good bonus).
always keep in mind that it is mostly the common items that make up for the most ambiente since they are the once worn by all the npc around the world.
