I can't seem to get Isabela's friendship above 50% before the end of Act 2.  I just want to be friends, and I don't want to romance her (which would be the easiest way).  She's not my type.  ^_^

Any tips?  I've used the sarcastic tone when talking with her, and I've given her the ship in the bottle, but it's never enough to push her above 50% so she comes back at the end of Act 2.

Help!

The trick is you have to take her on quests where she'll give you approval., The two bigger ones are the quest that she gives you about her friend with the cargo on the docks and Aveline's Act II loyalty quest.  You may want to take her to the fade with you as well.

Also, if she's in your party and you have the option to take money for quests? Take it.

Something that might help, would be looking up the quests on the Dragon Age Wiki to see which ones give you Isabela's approval boosts.

The funny part about killing kelder is when I had Fenris do it and only got frienship with Varric and Isabela. Fenris asked to kill the guy and wasn't angy or happy about it lol

Act I:
- Blackpowder Promise: when you trigger the quest and hit Dead Man's Pass and talk to Javaric, merely accepting the quest will give you +5 Friendship with Isabela ("do it for the money" or "do it to kill outlaws" both work)
- Isabela's Contact: after accepting the quest, go to talk to Martin in the back of the Hanged Man with Isabela in the party, +5 Friendship just for accepting the next step from Martin.
- Magister's Orders: if you kill Kelder, Isabela gets +5 or +10 Friendship I don't remember
- The First Sacrifice: Going to the Blooming Rose to talk to Idunna. Do NOT pick the investigate option when Isabela asks can't you do this later, that will give you +5 Rivalry. Instead, just go through the dialogue and then kill Idunna for +5 or +10 Friendship (can't remember) from Isabela.
- The Wayward Son: Letting Feynriel choose to go to the Dalish gives Isabela +10 Friendship.
- An Errant Letter: I THINK if you blackmail Thrask with the letter, Isabela gets +5 Friendship

Act II
- Night Terrors (follow-up to the Feynriel storyline). Bring her to the Fade. She will betray you. When you go talk to her about it, pick "I forgive you" for +10 Friendship. Obviously picking "You backstabbing *****" will get Rivalry points.
- The only other one I can remember, other than the ship gift, is Fenris' quest, A Bitter Pill. If you give Orana the elf slave some money and tell her to leave, Isabela gets +5 Friendship, but she gets Rivalry points if you keep the slave or you hire the slave and pay her.

That's pretty much everything I remember off the top of my head. It should be enough to bring you to 50% at least, unless you've gotten Rivalry points from her by being a goody-goody or too much of a hard-@ss

You get a wopping +15 to friendship if you kill Kelder yourself (don't let Fenris do it).

Can't you just be friends with benefits?

I tried that, but Fenris apparently disapproved and I couldn't proceed with the romance with him simply because I had Isabela unfurl my mast.

I ran into this same problem myself. I didn't take Isabela along on any quests in Act 1, since she's little more than a busty speedbump on Nightmare. I figured I could get all the Friendship I needed to keep her through Act 3 from her home dialogues and quest.

No such luck. Turns out, if you've been playing Jerk!Hawke, you'll shut down flat her "catching up" conversation at the beginning of Act 2. No dialogue choices or anything, Hawke is just all, "Don't get up in mah bidness girl." This means no +25 Friendship from flirting, and she doesn't give you the prompt to go talk to Martin. You can still do Finders Keepers, but I had forgotten she had started the quest on my first playthrough, so I didn't bring her along for that either.

So far, this is what I've gotten/am depending upon to boost Friendship:
+10 for any of the dialogue options after giving her the Ship in a Bottle
+10 for having her in the party when, during Aveline's quest, after meeting Donnic in the Hanged Man, you tell Aveline to arrange a patrol.
+10 for bringing her into the Fade during Night Terrors, having her betray you, and forgiving her later.
+10 for the nice or funny dialogue options after starting a romance with Merrill, Fenris, or Anders and talking to her about it, if anyone is aware of other opportunities.

I know you can get a bit more from various dialogue paths after sleeping with her without starting a romance, but I haven't gotten that scene to trigger yet. I think there's another 10-20 available during To Catch a Thief, though as she ditches you for the rest of the chapter right afterward and is thus unavailable for Questioning Beliefs, I'm not sure if that's enough on its own.  Another +10 somewhere else would round it all out.

You can get an additional 5 friendship from her in from two places without combat:

1. In Act 1, when you are doing "The First Sacrifice" quest, if you refuse Ghyslain de Carrac's request to find Ninette, you get +5 friendship with Isabela. This does not affect you actually doing the quest.

2. Assuming you let Feynriel go with the Dalish in act 1, if you go to Sundermount at the start and catch the templars trying to take Feynriel away from the Dalish. If you just leave without interfering, +5 friendship with Isabela.

If you take her along on Night Terrors and make her betray you first with a humorous response, you get +5 friendship, and another 10 later when she apologizes (provided you forgive her).

In the Fade if you choose the sarcastic option you get another 5 or 10 friendship.

Reloaded an earlier save to check; apparently being Jerk!Hawke doesn't prevent you from the initial flirty dialogue in Act 2, I just didn't think to take the option. Still got +5 from it, so apparently I only need 5 more points from somewhere to hit 50.

I'll bring her along on Night Terrors and see if there are any more opportunities.

Edit: Confirmed, choosing the funny option when dealing with Carress gets you another 5 Friendship.  There are two dialogue choices, but I'm guessing it's the second one where you say something like, "Well, I can't compete with that."  Thanks for the tip.

Double edit: Turns out you only get +5 from the post-other-companion-romance conversation.  I'm pretty sure you get at least 5 points for agreeing to help Isabela before the final meeting with the Arishok, however, and at that point she hasn't left the party yet.  So, it's still possible to unlock Questioning Beliefs with no points from Act 1 and without having her refer you to Finders Keepers.

Kill Gascard, and receive +10 from Isabella. I guess she hated his guts almost as much as my Hawke.

That's another good one, though I already did the quest without her. Derp.

Does Isabela need to be friend with me before the end of "To Catch a Thief" quest? I have +40/45 points* before this quest and giving her the book can give me another +15, but she still don't want to stay with me. So - is it possible to have her in act 3 without reaching Isabela's Questioning Beliefs quest?

(+15 from Fade, +10 from bottle, +10 from Aveline quest, +5 from Merril romance and some points from Act 1)

Oh no.  I thought 50% was the key, but she still didn't come back?

The key is to complete "Questioning Beliefs", which is only available at 50% (friendship or rivalry). For more information, click on the Isabela FAQ link in my sig.

In general I've found being generally snarky, and insisting on money for stuff when you can will do it.

One person reported getting her to come back without completing "Questioning Beliefs" on the rivalry, but I've never seen it happen myself. I'm pretty sure it was Mary Kirby who said that you need to complete Questioning Beliefs to get her to come back. To be safe, do Questioning Beliefs and you should be fine for her to take her Big Damn Heroes moment.

Thank you for the faq, hoorayforicecream. I've been looking for a way to change my perception of Isabela. So far she's been "meh... not interesting enough" for me.

Thank you once again.

No problem. Isabela's my favorite character from DA2, so I spent a lot of time learning about her. There was actually a pretty decent thread yesterday about why people (like me) find Isabela interesting. I'd suggest reading it here.
