Are you a Battle Mage who is disappointed that the only close range attack you get is Cone of Cold? Do you find Mind Blast to be wussy? Do you wish that your talents have less overlap with Merrill? Then this idea of mine may serve you well.

It's simple. Using the Console, add the Templar talent tree for Warriors to your Mage. Optionally, remove the Arcane and Entropy trees (Crushing Prison sucks fireballs on Nightmare, and Arcane Wall can be given to Merrill/Anders; you can also leave all Entropy spells to Merrill). Add Holy Smite to your talents. You may also want to remove the Spirit tree from your talents as well, again because both Merrill and Anders have it, and because the Dispel Magic in the Templar tree is vastly superior to the one the the Spirit tree, and Silence is vastly superior to Horror.

There. Now your Mage looks more unique when compared to Anders and Merrill, and you get the nice magical skills your Mage deserves from the Templar tree. After all, Templars get those powers by consuming lyrium - any fool can do that, especially if your brother is a Templar.

Holy Smite does close quarter AOE Spirit damage with Friendly Fire, and its damage value is less than Cone of Cold with slightly less cooldown (just as Spirit Bolt does less damage than Winter's Grasp with slightly less cooldown). Overall, a pretty balanced and fun power on a Mage, and the animation with a Staff looks great. If you have a Spirit enhancing staff it helps you further.

Have fun!

Wouldn't Mana Clash or Glyph of Neutralization be the mage's equivalent?

Wish had those skills, even though Mana Clash was buggy to use in DAO.

For those who didn't play DAO. Mana Clash turned enemies mana into damage against them, and removed all mana. Instantly killed other spellcasters.

Glyph of Neutralisation disabled spellcasting in its area, and neutralised mana and enchantments.

On the topic of the battlemage, I would like to make a mod that adds the battlemage specialisation to the game. Hopefully try to copy alot of the DAA skills.

So you got:
- Stoic (passive) = when mage takes damage, he generates mana
- Hands in Winter (active) = freezes all nearby enemies, similar to mindblast except in DAA it did not friendly fire. Was extremely overpowered.
- Elemental Chaos (sustained) = constant damage of all elements to all enemies nearby, rapid mana drain.
- Draining Aura (sustained) = drained health of nearby enemies, consumed mana every time it worked

Now obviously since DA2 has larger specialisations, 1 more skill would need to be added and upgrades for all abilities would need to be added.

There is this mod which improves many Mage spells, including giving Transmutation (Dispel Magic upgrade) a damage value on par with Crushing Prison. I don't agree with all changes in the mod though- I edited out most of them and kept a bare minimum (improved Dispel Magic & Walking Bomb, improved Entropy tree, improved Haste duration) while toning down the damage values quite a bit.

Inside that mod is also a tweak to Mind Blast which gives it larger radius, no FF, and 5 second Stun duration, bringing it closer to Hands in Winter

You can give Hawke Wrath of the Elvhen via the Console, which is similar to Draining Aura/Elemental Chaos.

Honestly I don't think Mana Clash is necessary as enemy spellcasters in DA2 are already weaker than enemy assassins.
