Why did Anders... (don't worry this is not one of THOSE topics)

Why did he give Varric his mother's pillow, and not me???  : (  We lived together for years, and I was the one he betrayed the most, what with lying to me and all that.  The only thing he has from his mother, probably his entire familly...

I felt worse than if I'd walked in on him in bed with somebody else, seeing him giving that keepsake to Varric whereas I never got anything from him to remember him by...

Cause the companions talk to each other. They wanted to give them something new to talk about. Plus Varric was basically the only companion besides bethany who he didn't disagree with a lot.

Perhaps... Perhaps it's for the best. Who knows what state that pillow was in.
He gave you more than material things however. He gave you the start of the revolution and angry Templar! ...Great gift, huh?

It's a good sign. We want Anders to have friends other than Hawke and Justice.

Trust me.

But...but he has the Warden-Commander, Nathaniel, Oghren...

My bf has plenty of friends, but if he were saying, "hey this is my great grandmother's ring" and giving it to his best bro-pal, in all likelihood he'd be sleeping on the couch!

Because Varric is the only other companion who cared enough to befriend him. I imagine with Aveline's vexation, Fenris' disdain, and Merrill's indifference towards him, that he saw Varric as the only good friend he can rely on.

Then again, I admit that he's highly deprecative and venomous to some of the other companions to begin with.

Varric is gorgeous to him through the whole game - they are certainly BFFs. I suspect he thinks Hawke is going to share in whatever he's got planned (if you're his friend) and doesn't particularly want the pillow to suffer the same fate.

Another good question is how come he acted like he didn't even know my Hawke (who was romancing him) when she walked in on his conversation about the black marsh with Varric? He was just like "Oh, you have company" and left without even a nod.

Perhaps that was Justice telling the story. We know Justice disapproves of Hawke and Anders. :P

Anders wanted to romance Varric, but had to settle for the next best thing.
Just like Hawke, actually.

It's a pillow. It's brown now, but it probably started out white. You don't want it. It smells. Hell, Varric doesn't even want it.

Besides, if you want to give something that's going to outlive you, give it to the dwarf-narrator. The narrator tends to come out pretty good. Don't give it to the hero, that's just going to get it burned to a crisp. He's possibly sleeping in your bed for three years. That's gotta be a bigger gift than a pillow.

You know why? Because you might be mighty PISSED at him.
Also, he clearly is shocked that you want something to do with him still... he has clearly prepared himself for the anger his lover will show.
He's prepared for the circumstance in which you kill him for what he did.
It makes sense that he would leave the pillow with Varric. A good friend. Someone who would not judge him too harshly.
The discussion goes very clearly in the direction... I've made a tough choice, I've done something, I've put something above us and love... I know you might not want to see me right now and I'm sorry.

I give my friends used pillows when I'm about to do something really stupid too. However, I'm starting to run out of pillows.

I actually thought it was very sweet. Varric seemed touched too, even though he refused to take it. I think Varric is Anders' best friend, maybe the only friend if Hawke is his rival. Varric likes Anders just for being Anders, he doesn't even care that he's a mage and all that. I think Anders is just trying to show that he appreciates it. There's no need to be jealous. After all, we have an option to do as our mum did and elope with an awesome Fereldan apostate! :)
Although I admit that to receive a gift would be cool, LIs in DAO, except Leliana, gave the warden something and it was nice.

I noticed Varric kind of plays big brother to the other companions, always looking out for them, but not making it too obvious to them. Several times you hear him talking about using "connections" to keep thugs away from Ander's clinic, or to ensure Merrill doesn't run into trouble when she walks the alleys at night. He refers to Anders as "Blondie", but in a playful sense. I think Anders just wanted show Varric he appreciates his concern. While Varric won't openly admit it, Anders recognizes that at heart he is a good friend. There is another possibility to consider as well. Anders knows that the path he is about to take will likely end with his demise. One of the early warning signs someone may be preparing to take their life, or are expecting to die, is giving away personal effects.

Varric is such a softie inside. I just love him. He's always so sweet and gentle with everyone. A true friend, truly.

We eloped with him?

Did someone not tell me this? I don't know if my Hawke is ready for that level of commitment.

Running off into the sunset to spend the rest of your life as a hunted fugitive with your lover sounds like more commitment than your average marriage, if you ask me. XD

Yes, but it doesn't have the word "marriage". It's a sneaky marriage.

Besides. What's the other option? Get arrested for helping him? Rotting away in a jail? Listening to Carver say "I told you so" through the bars?

The running away is actually a much less obnoxious option. Except for the sleeping in dirt and fleeing Templars part.

Because you have your own pillows and Justice never sleeps.
