Why did Anders... (don't worry this is not one of THOSE topics)

I have to agree it was because next to Hawke assuming you were in the friendship with him, he was his only real friend, and he wanted Varric to know it. I think Varric felt like something was going to happen because when he refuses it he says something along the lines of "Oh no Blondie, you keep it and dream of killing many more Templar's on it."

Oh well at least after Varric turns it down, Anders didn't turn around to me and say ok I guess you can take this now.

I noticed Varric kind of plays big brother to the other companions, always looking out for them, but not making it too obvious to them. Several times you hear him talking about using "connections" to keep thugs away from Ander's clinic, or to ensure Merrill doesn't run into trouble when she walks the alleys at night. He refers to Anders as "Blondie", but in a playful sense. I think Anders just wanted show Varric he appreciates his concern. While Varric won't openly admit it, Anders recognizes that at heart he is a good friend. There is another possibility to consider as well. Anders knows that the path he is about to take will likely end with his demise. One of the early warning signs someone may be preparing to take their life, or are expecting to die, is giving away personal effects.
This was exactly what I thought when I saw the scene. I got so scared for Anders and Hawke. Couldn't turn off the game. I loved all of the foreshadowing they threw in. (Varric's, "Don't remind me, I introduced them" prevented me from saving the game and getting more than an hour of sleep). I think Anders may have tried to push Hawke away in the end, knowing that it would hurt them both, what he was about to do.
Although I do agree that I was a bit miffed that he didn't give Hawke something like the LIs in DA:O did; he even said that he hoped to give Hawke something as meaningful [as the amulet] at a later date. I guess he's the type to forget anniversaries/birthdays? xD

I just accepted Anders as a substitute for a pillow.
Aww, so cute
But yeah Anders giving Varric the pillow happens right before Anders admited that he had lied to Hawke. At the time he probably thought either he'd end up dead or that Hawke wouldn't forgive him.

Really? Because I think Anders cheating on you would be just a LITTLE more hurtful than him giving away his possessions to people. In fact, when I saw that scene I was more worried that he was getting suicidal than pissed because while he was getting suicidal he wasn't giving everything to me.I felt worse than if I'd walked in on him in bed with somebody else, seeing him giving that keepsake to Varric whereas I never got anything from him to remember him by...

Did someone not tell me this? I don't know if my Hawke is ready for that level of commitment.
Yeah, Hawke and Anders can go to the... or at least get the blessing of the... ohwait.
It is probably a game mechanics thing, the pillow part. the cut scenes are cut scenes, they happen that way regardless of Hawke's reputation standing with each companion. I hate to dismiss it so easily, but it seems to me that mixing up the scenes too much would end up on the cutting room floor in favor of more quests (or the LI's sequence post-Mom-trauma).

What? When did this pillow scene happen? Either I'm blocking it out, or I missed it!
Did you do his Act III companion quest? Or rather, did you agree to go distract the Grand Cleric? You have to do that to unlock his Act III Questioning Beliefs quest. The "pillow talk" (Sorry for the joke

The "pillow talk" (Sorry for the joke) happens during the Act III Questioning Beliefs conversation. I totally understand if you said no I'm not going to help you with your shady schemes. In which case you would have missed the pillow scene. That's what I did on all playthroughs but this one when I wanted to see what happens.
Ahhh that's it. I told him I wasn't going to help him with whatever he had planned. I'll reload, just to see.
I did help him on my first playthrough, but I deleted most of my save games from that. I didn't pay attention I guess. I knew something bad was going to happen, but I thought he was going to sacrifice himself in some noble stand. I had no idea he was planning to hurt innocent people. =/

It's a pillow. It's brown now, but it probably started out white. You don't want it. It smells. Hell, Varric doesn't even want it.
Besides, if you want to give something that's going to outlive you, give it to the dwarf-narrator. The narrator tends to come out pretty good. Don't give it to the hero, that's just going to get it burned to a crisp. He's possibly sleeping in your bed for three years. That's gotta be a bigger gift than a pillow.

Did Varric make a sarcastic comment, or was he like "Thanks"?
But maybe as he says about Emile, Anders was in the Circle most of his life, and doesn't understand how the real world works! This kind of move would usually result in girlfriend walluping him with the All-Star wallup mallet!

It is rather strange that Anders would give a personal memento like this to his bro. Give him his signed wallup mallet from the Wallup All-Stars, sure. Mother's pillow? Eh? That's totally a girlfriend gift.

Varric won't take it. He tells him to keep it for himself and to have many more dreams of killing templars on it. :3

He probably was trying not to tip you off. If he came up to you to try and pawn off his beloved possessions, you'd know something was up. Instead, since he wasn't confiding in you, you overlooked it. Like "oh they must have talked about pillows a lot before today."
Actually he does admit he lied and that something indeed was wrong right after giving the pillow to Varric. At least if you friendromanced him he does.

But actually, I thought that scene between him and Varric was so sweet. It felt like Hawke had walked in on something really intimate, but in a good way. After Bethany disappears (if she was ever there), Anders' only friends are Hawke (if friends) and Varric. The voice in his head does not count. I loved that scene, and I like that it shows someone other than Hawke cares about him.

Even on reload to see this, I felt dirty distracting the Grand Cleric. <_< But at the end I noticed that I never got his goth clothing upgrade because every playthrough I refuse to help him with this - haha.

Plus, at this point Anders has been living with Hawke (if romanced) for three years. I imagine he's shared quite a bit with Hawke, it just happens off-screen.
