Male Hawke.

Now I'm not one of those guys going "OMG GAY ANDERS GET IT OFF".  It doesn't bother me, and I LIKE the idea that the writers had a gay character initiate a romance on a male player.  Kudos for having the balls, guys, and big ups for shooting down that guy in that one thread everyone else has been linking. 

Here's the thing: I'm just not interested. 

But I want to visit the dude's house, he just had a friend die, we gotta talk this **** out like bros . . . and now I've been through this conversation three times.  Is there any way for me not to initiate a romance with him, but also not start a huge argument?  He's such a catty little **** lol

Note: when you turn him down romantically, you get +30 rivalry.  When you tell him he was wrong to side with Justice and defend the mages, you only get +5.

Guess he's just sensitive. Best you can do is take a small approval hit and move on.

Only +5 Rivalry because he's probably used to catching flak about Justice and his mage cause so it's all in a day's work.

+30 Rivalry because Hawke is such a hot hot man and Anders FINALLY works up the balls to put the moves on you, and you shoot him down. : ( Nothing hurts like wounded pride.

To sum up, yea I don't think you can get out of that better than only getting +5 Rivalry.

My Rogue said TWO, just TWO nice words to him and suddenly I have 2 heart and 1 heart break options. I can't help she is so hot but damn you gotta read the atmosphere Anders.

Poor b*stard used to be a player before Justice came along. He's definitely been without for at least a year by the time Hawke turns up. Can't blame him for trying.

Pick the comedy option and he won't hit on you-I'm pretty sure he gets irritated and glows at you instead. I think the bottom option might be the broken heart icon, too. Being diplomatic makes him flirt.

You got +30 rivalry? Are you sure that's not a bug of some sort? I turned him down just yesterday (to see what would happen) and earned only +10 rivalry points (which is nothing. Anders is super easy to max out on friendship if you're pro mage.)

I'm really surprised you took such a huge hit. O.o

That's .. interesting. I never had any problem to be friends with any companions with no flirting. Without using any cheats, I achieved 100% friendships from all companions and was romanced Fenris. Once you have started flirting, there are less diplomatic/sarcastic options, i guess.

I am in mid Isabela romance, and I have gotten full friendship with everyone but Sebastian, You don't really need to let him down. Anders hit on me once and I just basically said I was flattered then never flirted with him again, nor did he flirt with me, even though the options came up. You can be supportive to him without being flirty no worries

Okay. Here is how you do it.

In the first conversation, if you choose the diplomatic option he will start flirting.
Continue being nice, etc. Don't turn him down yet.
Second conversation, choose diplomatic options even if they turn into hearts. Never pick the stuff on the left side of the wheel.
Eventually Anders says something like "the two of us are a bad idea". THEN agree with him by choosing the bottom option with a broken heart.
I think it was 15 or 20 friendship points just on the second convo. Similar for the first convo.

there's no way to not get rivalry if you turn him down after sleeping with him, DUH.

However, if you don't want rivlary points (not a big deal anyway since you can gain friend points back pretty easily) pick the "neutral heart" (middle slot). Don't pick any hearts after that. I've done this with both a female and male Hawke. No rivalry gain, no ghey  relationship will happen. Both female and male Hawke were friends with Anders.  Get out the confetti and balloons.

Same here. And because I played it just a few hours ago, I'm very sure about my Hawke getting only + 10 rivalry points. She had no problems making up for those, she is ~60 friendship already with him, and they're still hanging out at around the end of Act I.

Makes sense, Fade spirit possession seems like it would be quite the obstacle when he's trying to pick up some saucy tavern wench.

Anders is heartbroken, lonely, and desperate. Then you come along and you're "Oh hey its totally cool with me that your a crazy abomination thing. Heal me, k?"

and anders is all "HOLY **** I think I love this guy/girl"

He effectively hasn't been laid since he joined the wardens (though that wasn't from lack of trying >.>) Give the guy a break ;p Tell him right out the gate you're not interested. Take the rivalry hit. Its very easy to get 100% friendly with anders, simply by being pro-mage. I actually wait till act2 to boost his friendship past the 25%mark ;p

With a male Hawke you can got +5 friendship in the first conversation if you flirt with him, and turn him down when you ask about him and Karl.

In retrospect: it probably was +10 rivalry. I wouldn't know, because I have an SDTV and cannot read the arcane microscopic runes in which these numbers are emblazoned. However, years of studious practice, zazen meditation, and careful application of the rosetta stone have allowed me to decipher their basic intent.

It is sinister.
