If this scenario happened in an RPG at my table, my players would be very disenchanted.

DM: "Your mother is kidnapped."
Player 1: "I use all my resources to find her!"
Player 2: "I use all my resources to find Player 1's mother!"
Player 3: "Me too!"

Adventure ensues.

DM: "Despite your every effort - she is turned into a zombie, you know there was never any way you could have stopped this."
Player 1: "Are you f---ing kidding me?"
Player 2: "So, we just sat here for story hour?"
Player 3: "Guess so."
DM: "But wasn't it so DEEP? Didn't it really just get you emotional?"
Player 1: "Maybe when I thought I was striving for something."
Player 3: "Well, I guess there was pizza and soda, tonight wasn't a complete waste."
DM: "See you guys next week!"
Player 2: "I don't think so man, if I'm gonna be told a story instead of collaborating on one, I'd rather read a good book."
Player 3: "Yeah man, when you're finished writing your book... let us know, we'll buy it and read it."
Player 1: "Guys, if you want to actually roleplay, I'll DM next week."

Those are stange times indeed... People is ready to pay much bucks for copy-paste area... Squishy ridicolus combat... and rpg with less rpg elements........ And if one don't agree with them and its say its a bad game.. They address it like a hater or troll... They see shiny effect... and blood explosion... pirates with corset and panties.... ans day cooooooooooooooooooooooooool *O*....

Well im a pc user...I have nothing aganist console player...i own a console too (ps3) with many games... But its silly see people that call others with names like troll or hater.. or doomsayer....

Seriusly Grew up!

All of this ^ But primarily the bolded part. Its actually pretty hilarious :D. But also kind of sad :(
Though I suppose those players just genuinly like the game, and somehow look past or even accept/embrase those flaws..  But then again some of them could just be dogs trying to defend their master(s). Who knows, and who really cares?

Threads like this are just too funny.

The RPG on rails thing doesn't appeal to me, I prefer a little more choice. It's one of the upsides to modern Western RPGs, craploads of choices to make, usually.

I'm far from an expert on the realities of game coding, but it seems fairly obvious that PC games can and do get butchered so they can be played on consoles. The only way it is realistic to expect a similar experience from both platforms is if the game is reduced to the lowest common denominator in terms of computing power and input devices.

In RPGs the graphics aren't so important (they'd have to be scalable to accomodate for low end PCs anyway) and AI are rarely impressive (especially now that they tend to mimic MMO's tropes).

Experiencing the story, exploring the world in a RPG can be done on both platform. The only real problem is the ergonomics and how much time and money you're willing to spend on it.

Compare Kirkwall to any Assassin's creed city on console and you'll see that what we see here isn't the technical limitations of the consoles, but the technical and financial limits of the Dragon Age project.

But it has already been pointed out by others that the console games with rich environments don't have a party system or much customization of the main character. Assassin's Creed was specifically cited, and I own GTA IV myself. BTW, I bought an XBox game pad for my PC just so I could play XBox ports better.

Yep, but the the tiny dungeon succession has been a Bioware trademark for a very long time. When they said that the game would be city based (as in 90% of the game happening in the city) I expected them to grow up and break the mold a bit. I wasn't expecting anything close to Assassin's Creed, Prototype, or other city based action game but I expected more than four main areas (low town, high town, dark town, docks) + repetitive mini dungeons that didn't evolve over time (they could have at least used seasons, change the lightings to make us feel the passage of time like act 1 is in autumn, act 2 in winter and act 3 in spring, something anything to make us feel this is a living environment).

This is not about console limitations, this is about time and money.
