I started a new game and gave Carver the following tactic...

Enemy: Target Rank is Critter -> Attack

Simple huh? He will run around and attacked critters (small health bars) first. However, he will jump from one critter to another and never stay on the same one. Am I missing something here? I’d really like to setup a nice assist train tactic set.

I also tried...

Enemy: Target Rank is Critter -> Use condition for next tactic
Enemy: Nearest Visible -> Attack

However, he only attacks attack the nearest visible enemy instead of prioritizing critters first.

What gives?

each of those tactics is independant. You're telling carver that if there is a target who's rank is critter to attack the nearest visible enemey reguardless of rank.

When you give a rank you need to have it conditionally set to attack that rank.  If there are multiple enemies of that rank, carver will always attack the next one because your tactics are telling him to look for that rank.  They arn't telling him to attack the target hes attacking.  It's syclicle retargeting because tactics is saying attack critter.  Doesn't matter that hes already attacking a critter, just that he attacks one.  Forcing a target check for critter.  If one appears other than the one he is attacking, bing, hes going to attack that critter.

What about the first one? Why does he jump around from one critter to another before he kills one? It's really strange.

I think I see what you mean for the second one.

I really just want him to attack critters first then normal mods.

I wouldn't concern myself with critters really, they will die by mere proximity to a 2h weapon. Let him go after normals.   Carver benifets more from clusters than critters anyway.

Shouldn't this work then?

Enemy: Target Rank is Critter -> Use condition for next tactic
Enemy: Any -> Attack

Any target can be critter he will attack any target following that.

Enemy target Rank: critter, set condition
Target of Carver: attack.

should work.  at least well, yeah. heh. tactics are so fubar.

tip* if for some reason you alter tactics and drag a tactic through the set next clump, reapply all your tactics where you want them so they follow the progression you set forth.  Seems to be a bug of some sort.  Doing that little trick has helped alot.

just click through the tree in progression over each section of tactics for the whole thing.

Even so. I'd still like to get it to work.

Not yet. He seems to just attack the first enemy he saw when combat started. Still testing it though.

I really just want one of my characters to target enemies based on rank.

It's like tactic execution doesn't stop when the attack command is given and keeps falling through.

More testing I guess.

This is probably too late, but here goes anyway.

In DA:O, Enemy: Rank - sets or changes target. Enemy: Any - did not and applied only to current target. It looks like the mechanics in DA2 are similar to DA:O.

By setting Carver's tactics to:
Enemy: Target Rank is Critter -> Attack

or

Enemy: Target Rank is Critter -> Use condition for next tactic
Enemy: Any -> Attack

you are constantly telling Carver to reset his target to whatever he sees is ranked "Critter". This would explain why he is constantly changing his target.

What you can try is setting Carver's tactics in such a way that he doesn't look for a critter ranked creature unless he has no target. Like this maybe:

Enemy: Any -> Pommel Strike
Enemy: Any -> Attack
Enemy: Target Rank is Critter

I am pretty sure this is the same problem you were seeing in your Bethany tactics question thread. I'll post there too.
