I can see that chests are there to give rogues experience and skill advancement, though some areas you have locked chests and no one in the party can open them depending on skill set at very early levels. Locked Chests at the origin stories for one.

What ticks me off is finding really bad loot in those. I know theres a loot table for chests in general but who in their right mind would keep a locked chest with a single elfroot or crafting item in it.  At least a small amount of coin, dagger or small gifts we can use would be more plausible an explanation.

Can you imagine fighting off four darkspawn with a group and your rogue players spies a chest.

Redcliff Castle. Your party has just finished laying waste to some skeletal warriors in a small antechamber off the main hall..

Rogue "My friends I believe I see a chest there"
PC: Panting "Try it, but hurry, I hear something coming and it sounds hungry"
Mage Sips Lyrium potion "Please hurry, we need you to trap the threshold"
Rogue: Audible snap "Tricky, damn broke a lockpick"
Ranger Listening "I hear four bodies aproaching"
PC  "Leave the fracking chest and trap the door now!"
Rogue "Almost got it.."
Mage "Ask Sandhal when next we camp for enchantment on one of your trusty lockpicks"
Ranger "Incoming!"

ROAR! SNARL! Darkspawn attack!

Rogue "Got it!!"

Mage casts cone of cold as PC rushes to intercept and gets frozen (again!) with three darkspawn.
Ranger fires shatter, pinning shot.
Mage flying fist, mind blast.
PC Unthaws glares at mage and bashes the last frozen darkspawn with his shield before collpasing against the wall shivering.

PC "Friend Mage will you please say you are casting that before I rush to defend. I tire of hyperthermia"
Mage Will not the darkspawn know what to expect then?"
Ranger "There is no save against cone of cold, warning them by accident will result only in a suprised expression on their part"
PC "So my stealthy friend, your contribution to this last encounter not withstanding, what did your labors accomplish?"
Rogue "Um, an elfroot"
PC shivering glares at him angrily. "The next chest you approach during combat, friend mage has permission to freeze you solid!"

Rogue "But it could have been something very lucrative?"

Ranger "Name one item you have found in a locked chest that was actualy lucrative?"

Rogue ponders...

Mage "I have found this mace, a dagger, six silver and a leather helmet on our foes"

PC "Well? When WAS the last time you found anything valuable in a locked chest?"

Rogue "Um, oh yeah that holy symbol"

Mage "That you were given as you seemed to relish those"

Ranger "That was four days past"

PC "Stick with doors from now on, let us continue"

Mage waggles eyebrows at the Rogue and grins evily.
"I am sure Bella will enjoy the gift of an elfroot when you regail her in Denerim about our exploits and your skills with locks"

Rogue "But we do use them right?"
Ranger "We have seventy two lesser healing draughts and a limited amount of packing space"
PC "The next eflroot you try to take with us becomes your dinner"

I practicly ignore them on the third play through now, some randomization is needed for their tables.
