I've stumbled across a "romance issue", I'm romancing Isabela, got her to 100% friend and such but Merrill swings by my house and is all puppy dog eyes wanting to know how I feel about her. I don't wanna crus her by saying we're just friends, but if I say "ya I like you too, I will most likely screw up with Isabela".......so if I'm committed to making Isabela my first romance, should I just say to Merrill that she's a good friend when she swings by at night ??

I would suggest it.
However... I was not aware that Merrill would initiate any romance with you if you had not previously flirted with her in past dialogues, thus beginning the romance yourself.
I romanced Isabela as well and never had any cross over issue with Merrill, though I also made a point to avoid flirting with all characters except for Isabela... except Anders.... once.

It's almost unavoidable to not flirt with Anders but you've gotta put your foot down there......but ya I guess I flirted with Merrill once after I first met her.....I really don't wanna say no though if her pretty elf eyes cry I'd be sad.

My FemHawke said that she was like a sister when the option for no showed up. Considering Mage Hawke looses his/her sister, maybe that's a bit more meaningful than "Just friends."
Then again, I haven't gotten to that point in my MaleHawke, due to my OCD with the Leliana cameo.

I know how you feel. It was so hard not to flirt with Merrill. But you can't have both... in one play through.
To avoid the sad elf eyes just make sure to avoid flirting at all costs. Then no heart break. Or at least, no evident heart break, meaning no sad eyes.
And yeah. In that one conversation the options seem to be either flirt with Anders or halt the conversation and ****** him off. So I flirted... a little.

I was able to romance both, I flirted with Merrill initially then treated her bad from Act 2 on intiating a rivalry. But I friendshipped Isabela and got her romance fully locked in. But JUuuuuuuuuuuuuuust before the final show down in the Gallows, before you get the letter that initiates the whole Anders Dammit moment, Merrill suddenly shows up asking about "us". Last I had heard from her she threw me out even with having given her both gifts. So I let her move in because... well, Isabela made me 3way with Zev with her. Then on the final battle I got to smooch both Isabela AND Merrill. Even got the rivalry achievement with Merrill's romance completed.

well I slept with merril but told her I didn't want her to move in (so I didn't break it off with isabella), apparently she acts like nothing ever happened and we didn't have a romance. I thought it was pretty shallow that the romance ended right after sleeping with her but whatever.

Also, what's the point of high rivalry if they still sleep with Hawke? Merrile was Hawke's rival in my fem Hawke playthrough and they still slept together... What is that, some kind of angry "I hate you" sex?

I know. It is an impossible choice. But I fought off the draws of Merrill's incredible adorableness and eventually sorted her into the "little sister of the group" category. Which fit remarkably well.
Anyways, very satisfied with the Isabela romance. It is dynamic and complex and oh so entertaining.

you didn't do what I did? (sleep with merril but dump her afterwords?). I considered romancing merril just because her alternate appearance is sick.

You can have a romance with both and it makes sense. Isabella is a swinger and you can bed her early. You can then romance Merrill and have her move in. Since Isabella left for 3 years after act 2, going after Merrill makes sense. Isabella will comment on Merrill living with you and warn you not to mention that you are still seeing her. However I think there may be a scripting bug when you have a dual romance. It seems there should be more because there is clearly something that is supposed to happen with Isabella that is stuck in that play. I will have to wait for a patch beyond 1.01 and replay that the game with a dual romance to see if that gets unstuck.
