I need a break from the debates *le sigh*... And I'm curious who brought which companions.  Since basically you only get to pick 2 as Varric is locked in (duh!).

First time: Fenris and Anders - hated Carver with a passion, other than that it was my favourite party make-up: 2 mages, one 2H warrior and a rogue.  Anders over Merrill because well... I like Anders more and he's had experience hehe. Plus those two so growl at eachother, bound to get different perspectives on whatever I encounter.

Second time: Bethany and Anders - wanted to make Bethany a grey warden and see Nathaniel.  Except Nathaniel stuff is bugged out and I didn't realize that.  Still totally worth it because Bethany is so cool as a grey warden! The party ended up being two archers (Varric and Hawke) and two mages.  It was AOE central!!!  Easiest run of deep roads ever.

Third time: Carver and Fenris - I wanted to kill off Carver in this playthrough and since I couldn't bring Anders (cause he'd offer to save Carver), I brought Fenris. Plus Fenris was the LI in this one.  All made sense.  2 2H warriors, an archer and a mage... it wasn't bad but way harder than AOE party from second time.

So... who? why? :D

I took Fenris and Bethany. Purely because both are awesome. Fenris is very much a beast in his DPS as well as playing tank. Bethany is pure ****y with her Elemental AoE. Great DPS and a healer? I didn't think much of it. I regret it. Bethany ;-;

Second time I wanted Bethany a Warden so replaced Fenris with Anders. That was really the only reason I brought Anders. I abuse him so.

Third time I just brought Aveline and Fenris. Wanted to have a sibling kept out of the Roads for once.

JUST Varric.

We won.

On my mage playthrough I brought Anders and Carver, because Carver really is a good, believable character once you get past the sibling rivalry. The rivalry is actually acurate, and makes him a better character than sweet old sister, who always agrees with you and follows without question.

In my second mage playthrough, I brough Aveline and Isabela, since I was a Spirit Healer. I went on the highest difficulty yet on this playthrough and did fine everywhere but ONE place. The dragon fight. I wound up abusing a bug with the Revival spell so Isabela full-healed constantly, and was the only survivor. Took 5 minutes to do a quarter the dragon's health with just her. Had to spam stealth, as I got knocked down with every hit the dragon dealt.

Planning to do Anders and Fenris on my warrior's playthrough.

Might just two-man it again, though. Because Varric has the chest-hair and warrior's have the facial hair.

Other than Hawke and Varric, I usually bring Isabela and Merrill. Isabela because, well, she would be a treasure expert. And Merrill because I want her to explore the world.

Doing the Anders/Bethany combo is just HEARTBREAKING. I probably won't do that set up again.

The first time I'd already been spoiled, so since I love Carver I took him and Anders.

The second time I took Fenris and Merrill because I wanted to see Carver as a templar.

Third will be Bethany and somebody else besides Anders (since I haven't let a sibling die in the Deep Roads yet), not sure who.

I brought:
  • Merrill,
  • Varric
  • Avaline
I left Bethany at home because I'm not gonna get her killed by the corruption or becoming a Warden wich is still a death sentence so I prefer she'll be completely healthy and safe at home or in the circle tower but as herself and not as a Warden, that way even if when she is in the circle she doesn't have to say goodbye to her previous life and take the path of the Wardens, though I told Cullen "over my dead body"  <_<

I brought Varric, obviously. And then Carver, since he is my little brother, who helped me to raise money for the expedition. Besides, he wanted to come. Anders I brought because he is a Grey Warden and has been in the deep roads before.

Varric, obviously, Anders, because my PC wanted a guide who had been there before, and Carver, because even though Carver could be abrasive at times, he was still family, and my PC could trust no one better than her brother to guard her back.

Aveline because she's the warrior I can trust to have my back and Merrill because I wanted to give the darkspawn something they'd never seen before; a barefoot, perhaps teenage elf wandering around the deep roads. I always imagined them scratching their heads before shrugging and charging out of the shadows with that funky run they have. Was a little hard with DW rogue Hawke but wasn't terrible.

On my first playthrough I played a 2h warrior, and brought:

Fenris - because I liked him. And he was a good warrior.
Bethany - to have a mage.

On my second playthrough (which I'm still at) I'm playing a DW rogue. I brought:

Fenris - good damage dealing warrior.
Aveline - tank.

I'm going without a mage this playthrough, for as much as possible. Worked out just fine in the deep roads.

First playthrough (Mage): Fenris and Anders. Fenris because I wanted my LI with me and needed a tank, Anders because...I needed a healer.

Second Playthrough (Rogue): Anders and Aveline. Aveline for the tank, Anders because he's my LI and, again, because I needed a healer.

First run with my Mage - Aveline and Fenris. I was healing. That girl was witty Hawke who liked having reasonably happy people around her. Yes, Fenris is happy-ish in that group. His dry humour comes out.

This run as a warrior sort of tanking - Bethany and Anders. Because I meta gamed it and want Bethany in the Wardens....

Anders because figured Grey Warden would be best suited for Deep Roads.
Carver because he's family.

Didn't make real sense to take Aveline, what with her being busy as city guard and all. And didn't pick up other companions at that point.

Anders and ... Fenris? I think? Wow, I can't remember the second person ... pretty sure it was Fenris though. I definitely left Bethany at home, because Mom was being such a baby and I figured Hawke would be all "FINE MOM, BETHANY CAN STAY HOME."

Second time through it was Carver and Anders, 'cause I wanted Carver to be a Grey Warden. Seemed like a good fit for him!

Third time was Bethany and Anders, I wanted to see how Bethany likes being a Grey Warden. She uh. Doesn't.

First run, Anders and Merrill. Because I was romancing Anders and he was a Grey Warden, and also because my Templar sympathizer wasn't going to leave an abomination and a blood mage just sitting around in Kirkwall while she wandered off treasure hunting.

Since then... well, actually I end up doing rather similar things, maybe with Bethany/Fenris in for one instead. Most of my characters feel bad about letting the mages out of their sight for too long, either because they feel protective or don't want them unsupervised. Makes for some rather repetitive parties,

My most enjoyable one was Hawke dual rogue, Varric, Merrill and Isabela. I didn't really pick Isabela for anything in particular, other than slapping around the Rock Wraith while he's pulling himself together. Merrill because she's always gold, and because of how she pisses off the greed demon and shrinks him. Very, very easy run, and enjoyable.

I never brought a sibling because it always messed up Merrill's romance, so I gave up the reloading trials.

I brought Varric (that he was locked in was irrelevant because I took him everywhere), Carver (was not gonna say no to my bro nor was I going to cut off his balls in front of our mother), and Fenris. I was a dummy and thought the mere virtue of importing an Awakenings game meant Nathaniel would magically appear to save Carver. Did not even occur to me to take Anders. D'oh.

You know what's ironic? I just realized that my end-game party was the same as my Deep Roads party, and the reasons were strangely similar. My character could not do without Varric. He was her best friend. And she had to take Anders with her. Last time she left him alone, look at all the trouble he caused... Or that's what she tells herself. And Carver because family is family.

My first playthrough I brought the people who had the least commitments in Kirkwall. I don't remember who I brought in the second. Third was Anders and Carver. I figured Carver would be happier away from Kirkwall.

If I'm playing a mage, Anders and Carver, because I like the GW route for Carver.

If I'm a rogue or warrior, Anders and Fenris.  Team Awesome FTW!

I always have Merrill and Varric with me no matter what because they are my two favorite characters and both are powerhouses if you spec them properly. I bring Anders too becuase he is the only healer and I play on nightmare so he is vital.

First time around (unspoiled) I brought Fenris and Anders, along with Varrick, leaving Carver at home because mother begged not to take him. It was a fun playthrough :). Anders, because I thought his grey warden background would be helpful in the deep roads, and Fenris, because... eh. I like the character too much :P.

My friend spoiled it for me, so I brought Bethany and Anders because I figured the Wardens still needed to up their numbers. Still had my hero of ferelden mind set >.>

First playthrough was Anders, Carver, Varric.  I didn't know what was going to happen to Carver.  Actually, my first party didn't have Carver, I picked Aveline.  Mother begged me not to take Carver, but he made such a stink about not going when I left him out, I changed my mind.  I reloaded the game to take him with me.

I was quite amused when I got the letter from him in the Grey Wardens telling me it was my fault.  I was like, "Actually, I reloaded the darn game for you!"

Brothers.  :P
