Really no matter how you play this game, male or female, gay or straight, good or bad, the whole game forces you into uncomfortable situations and difficult decisions, and it's something that I both loved and hated about the game. In Origins and Mass Effect you are put into an environment where there is a certain evil you know you're working against and all your companions are on your side (for the most part) but in DA2 it's all about gray areas of morality and you don't always know where you stand. I think the companions and the friendship/rivalry system fit perfectly into this kind of setting and adds a lot of depth to the way you can interact with the world. So you don't have a friend you can always go to, or a girl to take home to your decapitated mother. This game and story doesn't have room for a comfort zone and in the end you just have to embrace it because Kirkwall takes no prisoners!

I just reread -- carefully -- David Gaider's response and I didn't find it offensive at all. The insanity thing was in reference to the fact that this person keeps creating new usernames and reposting basically the same complaint over and over and over. The cliche saying is "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."

Seeing as two of the LIs are cross species why does the gender even matter?

Obviously the "main demographic" was not that offended because Dragon Age 2 is selling really well! Straight males need to stop thinking their the only people in this world.
Besides, lots of people like to play in relationships that don't correspond to their own sexuality. My straight male brother ALWAYS plays as lesbian characters. I'm a lesbian and I usually prefer playing as gay men. Lots of girls love yaoi, they are doing Fenris and Anders with complete giddy glee. Lots of straight men like lesbians, they'll play as lesbians.
Gaider was COMPLETELY on the mark, and frankly if I were him I wouldn't have been half so respectful to that homophobic crap. They are romances for EVERYONE. Anyone can enjoy them, we don't have to stick to our own gender identity and sexual orientation!!!

It's really nice to not be forgotten in a game, for once. I normally play games and have to pick characters and romances that in no way reflect my reality or what I like to see. And to see people whinging on because there's a little gay or girl in their game makes me want to smack them a little. Not every gamer is a straight dude and maybe there's a big straight dude demographic, but maybe it's because the industry never tried to reach other demographics in the first place.

I personally always ignore the whole gender thing. I myself am a straight male and if I have my character romance someone I have them romance who ever I personally think they get along with the best or i think has the sweetest romance.
Hell personally I like male Hawke and Anders the best

I don't see the problem here. You know you can just reject Anders when he hits on you, right? +5 rivalry is nothing and it's really easy to make it up with him. Then you could still be friends without having to worry about triggering a romance.
That's what I did in Origins when Zevran hit on my male elf, and he never brought it up again. I took an approval hit, sure, but it was easy to make up. Plus he and Zev became pretty good friends later on
