How do you approach writing something of this nature?
With a feature script it's hard enough having to balance and tweak plot points with a solid story arc and create believable three dimensional characters - that's with each act ratio drafted to the format length. How do you apply the same, if not similar, rules in a gaming script. With so many branch possibilities how do you prep for such a process.
Is it the game development dictating the story or does the story decide the kind of missions/quests involved. I'm assuming this is brought together in a series of meetings between you and the development team.
I liked your story, but prefered DA:O in the classic sense, it's structure. I felt the stakes were higher and the payoff was far more rewarding than DA 2. It seems to me the approach with the trilogy feels much the same approach as 'Star Wars' or 'Matrix', where the first story is very much complete and the second and third are broken into two halves. I'm personally not a fan of this route as it feels detached to me, though, I understand it from a business point of view for a franchise to succeed.
It's hard to see how the stakes can be much higher than the original, though perhaps the angle is going more toward a 'world at war' theme, innner strugle and flaws of humanity rather than the outside alien threat. I think your audience would certainly relate to the themes in contrast to the world's current state. Or perhaps the outside threat comes in force and humanity comes together - all good stuff and would seem plausible from a mission/quest based gaming pov.
I enjoyed the character dialogue within the group - at times it was outstanding and felt very natural in the world you and the team had created, more so than in the cut scenes.
On a final note I think the sequel had more heart - I cared more about the characters here and the cinematic and intimate themes really pushed that through. I did feel some of the exposition from party members could have been handled better, but at the same time I understand that the 'story rules' differ between the game and film industry.
I am looking forward the the third installment, and I particularly hope it's freeze free.
