Unless it is used to prove how successful DA:O or ME2 was.

Then it is the Word of God.

Alright, people. The reviews and the charts of sales and pre-orders don't lie. Dragon Age 2 WAS NOT a very good game when compared with others. The creators of this game, and of all of the other Bioware games wanted to bring it in a new direction. That is usually when a company hits or misses. It can either trip them up, or make them better. When it comes to DA2 they did a VERY near miss i think. And that is just my opinion, although it seems that now more and more people are sharing it. This was not their greatest move. Although the game, like any other, does have its ups and downs. There were some really awesome aspects of the game, and then there were some horrendous ones. The dialogue wheel change was alright. But the romance options? DEFINATLY not as good as it was in origins. Once again, this is just my opinion. The BEST change i think was the combat. They did great there.

How about this: none of us know the budget for DA:2, therefore none of us know how many units BioWare needs to sell in order to turn a profit. I was kind of disappointed by this game as well, and it was entertaining to read all the Nerd-Rage, but these forums are getting ridiculous now.

"On second thought, let's skip the BioWare Social Network. It is a silly place..." (Monty Python reference = /endthread)

pretty much the case plus sells don't make a game bad- plenty of good games have had low sells due to not being mainstream,- then games like fifa/cod/sims sells aload no matter how good/bad they are.

It's pretty clear DA2 failed in it's objective of being "mass market".

End of.

Yes, DA2 is owned. And it sucks that it had to be this way. They should have thought about this big career move alittle better before they did it. I am saddned by this turn of events. DAO was so good!

But regardless we will all still buy Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 3 so they won't really care.
Even if Mass Effect 3 is so incredibly bad people will buy it.

Speak for yourself, unless I hear they make ME3 more of an RPG I sure aint buying it, I may get it pre owned eventually if I am that curious, but atm I could easily ignore it for months with Skyrim, so no issue.

You cannot call it a fail so early in the cycle. Wait six months before you hand out sentences.

Exactly, with this source being called unreliable it's hard to tell. But even so, just using X360 as a marker (I'm a PC player, but 360 seems to be the more popular platform) DOA sold 509,171 in the first two weeks worldwide, DA2 sold 521,405 in the first 2 weeks worldwide.

Even with some of those based on pre-orders, it's still a pretty nice profit only on the X360. It's hard to compete with games for the Wii and DS because of sheer amount of young kids who want those. RPG is a smaller market.

I honestly loved the game and I wouldn't really call that a failure...

First week DA2 sales were higher than DA:O (popularity of DA:O being the driving force).  Second week DA2 sales significantly lower than DA:O sales.  Low ratings and bad word of mouth takes its toll.

We won't really know until week 3.  But the fact that DA2 has so far outsold DA:O (on X360, can't compare to PC for variety of reasons...no digital numbers, lack of DA:O pc sales) is more indicative of the popularity of DA:O because it's only from the increase in first week sales (which by a strange turn of events just happens to make up for the drastic drop in the second week).

My advice to EA would be to have a second phase of marketing to overcome the negative (and often unwarranted) public reception.

Sadly, EA don't do marketing very well.

Yes, I see and understand your point, but it cannot be called a
'failure' as so many people are so quick to say (not directed at you).

The all-too-frequent lack of accurate PC sales may indicate industry manipulation of public opinion.  Add to this that digital distribution is often not included and it becomes very difficult to analyse sales data.  Even the publishing houses have dubious practises -- mainly coercing analysts and share holders.

The goal of DA2 was to appeal to a larger audience, yet it has trouble to outsell DA:O even with the fandom bonus.
Thats a failure.

No [insert Sten].  It's early data.  Nothing more or less.

It's so nice to see a voice of reason on these forums :)
We won't know the exact sales data for some time yet, espeically with how popular digital sales are becoming on PC.

Games sell the majority of their copies in the first few weeks/first month.

It posts the data that it has access to: which is not the whole picture.  If you have a more complete data set then I for one would appreciate seeing it.  And even then I would only view it as a snapshot of an evolving scene.

It isn't much use to anyone.  I suppose the quick answer to your query would be that they print that data to draw viewers to their site.  They are not the only site that publishes inaccurate data.  It's fairly common.  In fact finding that whole picture is very difficult indeed.

Never reinforce failure.

DA2 got super lucky with Homefront slipping a week.

DA2 has been a fail on a numbe of levels. Not only was it not mass market, it damaged Biowares reputation and alienated a lot of the the RPG customer base.

Try again with the Ultimate Edtion maybe. But looking at what is coming in the next few months DA2 looks done.
