I never played ME until the deal with ME2 free with purchasing Bioware. After I played ME2, i went and bought ME1 because I had no clue what I was doing since I was playing them in reverse.
Overall, I actually like them better than Dragon Age.
Are these games worth it?

I only got into Mass Effect a couple months ago, and I've fallen in love with the series. I have 3 playthroughs of ME1 and 4 playthroughs of ME2 under my belt, and I'm itching for ME3 which can't arrive fast enough.
I love love love the Shepard import feature which really elevates ME from a simple game and sequel to a full-on Star Wars-ian saga.
I also personally prefer the combat of Mass Effect over Dragon Age-style. I prefer playing as Shepard, and love that the squad members can look out for themselves. I was constantly annoyed by having to tinker with all my party members tactics in DA:O/DA2. I'm trying to have an epic adventure here, and having to pause the game to babysit my friends is not helping.
Maybe I'm just a sucker for space operas, but the Mass Effect universe feels like a living, breathing entity, and Shepard's adventure is well written and thoroughly engaging.
