Hmmm... Isabella as a rival could be interesting. How do we get that rivalry up when she seems so easy-going? The only time I recall getting rivalry points from her was when I turned down money LOL! Please let us know how a rivalmance with her goes.

Yes.
Yes.
Take her along with you. It's not possible to rivalmance her through sidequests alone.

What earns you rivalry points with Izzy? Would you please clue us in? Other than refusing money, of course.

Biggest ones are obeying the law and helping people for the sake of doing so. Do Avelines "Long Road" sidequest while being nice nets somewhere on the order of +25 rivalry. Bring Izzy to the fade and grill her afterward for +20 more. Those are the biggies iirc.. A few other +5s here and there... Not giving Martin the poison in Act 1 is +10 rivalry...

Be a good person. Act in a lawful, merciful, and charitable manner. Be sure to take her to the Fade and disapprove of her actions there. During Questioning Beliefs, tell her that helping people is its own reward.

Well, I just reloaded and replayed the conversation and it gave me the 10+ rivalry; must be refused both times, only refusing once then taking the pay raise doesn't work.

Yes, yes and yes.

Rivalry romancing her is just kind of difficult because flirting with her gives huge friendship boosts. You have to lug her around and be as irritatingly nice as possible.

Start of Act II, you do get an unavoidable +5 friendship with her when you first talk to her... Tried every dialogue combination to no avail.

Other rivalry gains include turning in the magistrate's son, letting Gascard go, accepting the "Fools Gold" quest, accepting the search for Ninette... Maybe I'm wrong, but I think berating Fenris for killing Hadriana was a rivalry boost as well.

Also, telling her that the relic must be returned to the Qunari gives rivalry, not sure just how much... For me it was only +5, but that maxed me out... And you do get to keep her that way :-D

To get her to return at the end of Act 2, you need to complete her "Questioning Beliefs" quest, which automatically comes up when you reach 50% friendship *or* rivalry. If you complete the quest, she comes back. However, you must do this before doing her "To Catch A Thief" quest, since she'll run off at the end of that, and you won't be able to do "Questioning Beliefs".

If you're already at 50% rivalry with Isabela and another companion's Questioning Beliefs quest has popped up, but you don't see one for Isabela, go to the Hanged Man and click on her.

Is it true that you can't get Isabella to love you if you're a rival and can only make her love you as a friend?

No. She'll fall for Hawke as a rival too.

Ooh, really? do you get the 'falling for you' speech as a rival?
I ask becasue according to the official guide you can only follow the romance to completion with full friendship, even though she will sleep with Hawke no matter the state of the relationship.

Really really. Rivalry relationships can be pretty interesting, because it's about the different viewpoints while still remaining close. Personally, I prefer the friendship romance with Isabela because I identify more with her than with the contrasting viewpoint (goody goody super lawful). However, I did find the rivalry romance still interesting.

Edit: At some point, I think I will write an Isabela FAQ, because I seem to be answering all these questions all the time. Maria Caliban, I know you're reading this, so you could help me out. I've seen you answering the questions just like I have, and I figure we could probably help each stamp out all Isabela-related ignorance out there :o.

Oh nice one :D

Will definitely be going for the rivalmance next time then.
I always thought this option with 'Bela would be more interesting - falling for the knight in shining armor and all that despite herself.

I'll definitely be bookmarking the FAQ, thanks guys :wizard:

edit - at least the official guide has pretty pictures hehe

Just as a quick warning, rivalmancing Isabela isn't that easy. I think the numbers cap out at 40 rivalry in act 1, and you still need to flirt with her in act 2 to start the romance (+25 friendship), so you really need to look for a bunch of other rivalry gaining bits, especially if you're playing on nightmare. It's doable, but you still need to hit 50+ and her Questioning Beliefs quest before doing her To Catch A Thief quest in act 2 or she just won't come back.

Can you get to full rivalry with her without flirting, have her come back and then flirt with her for the romance?

If I get to the "All That Remains" quest and she still hasn't popped up in Hawke's house, does that mean it's too late? I remember with other romance companions that they have a little cutscene after "Remains" is over. I've been trying to go easy on the flirting since I'm going for rivalry, but maybe I've gone too far and not flirted enough? As much as I love the rivalry system, it can be sort of confusing.

You can only initiate her romance in Act 2.

Oh, ok.  So can you get full rivalry before flirting in act 2?  Because I thought once a companion is maxed out in friendship/rivalry it will not change after that.  So if rivalry is maxed, then you flirt with with her you won't get the +25 friendship.  Do you think that is possible?

Edit: No, after doing the research, I've discovered it is, in fact, impossible to reach 100 rivalry before flirting with Isabela in Act 2. The biggest problem is that there are no options *to* flirt with Isabela on the rivalry path. This means that your only options to do so are to do it at the start (+25 friendship), or forgive her after Night Terors and flirt then (+10 friendship). There's a total of 125 possible rivalry points between act 1 and 2. Since sleeping with her (+10) won't happen until you flirt, and you have to take a friendship hit instead of a rivalry gain (+10), that means you're *at most* going to be at 95 rivalry before To Catch A Thief.

Wow, ok.  Thanks for doing all that.  So the most you can get is 95 before To Catch a Thief, but its only required that you have 50 or more at that time to get her full quest chain?  Do I have that correct?
