You can only initiate her romance in Act 2.

Oh, ok.  So can you get full rivalry before flirting in act 2?  Because I thought once a companion is maxed out in friendship/rivalry it will not change after that.  So if rivalry is maxed, then you flirt with with her you won't get the +25 friendship.  Do you think that is possible?

Edit: No, after doing the research, I've discovered it is, in fact, impossible to reach 100 rivalry before flirting with Isabela in Act 2. The biggest problem is that there are no options *to* flirt with Isabela on the rivalry path. This means that your only options to do so are to do it at the start (+25 friendship), or forgive her after Night Terors and flirt then (+10 friendship). There's a total of 125 possible rivalry points between act 1 and 2. Since sleeping with her (+10) won't happen until you flirt, and you have to take a friendship hit instead of a rivalry gain (+10), that means you're *at most* going to be at 95 rivalry before To Catch A Thief.

Wow, ok.  Thanks for doing all that.  So the most you can get is 95 before To Catch a Thief, but its only required that you have 50 or more at that time to get her full quest chain?  Do I have that correct?

You only need 50 for questioning beliefs in act 2.  And you kind of have to sleep with her before To Catch a Thief, I think.  Afterwards, I don't know if you still get a chance to.

I've actually written down everything you need to know in my new Isabela FAQ! Click the link in my sig, it's got all the friendship and/or rivalry points you need in the first two acts (no act 3 info, sorry). You MUST initiate the romance (i.e. sex) in Act 2, or it will not take. You cannot initiate it in act 3.

After further research, you *must* flirt with her and take the +25 friendship hit. There's no other way to do it; even the flirt option from the Night Terrors apology is gone on a rival path. The vast majority of flirt options on the rival path are completely gone. You don't get one from gifts or any of the other normal ones. You might get one if you get her commentary on other romances (with Merrill only), but that's pretty dangerous water to tread, given how finicky she is.

Thanks a bunch for your guide. I was banging my head against the wall trying to build rivalry with Isabela, and she just wouldn't have it. On my previous game, she just kept going back and forth and because of that she never returned after leaving with the book.

I noticed another thing that'll gain rivalry with Isabela that I didn't notice in your FAQ:

During "The First Sacrifice" you'll save Emeric from a bunch of thugs. Once you beat them and talk to him, picking the noble ('Waste of Time?') and then the good option ('Can I help at all?') will net you another +5 rivalry with Isabela.

EDIT:

And another one! At the Wounded Coast, there's a Dalish Assassin confronting a human who might or might not have been a Werewolf at some point. Choosing the noble option (something like 'is this what your mother would have wanted?') nets you another 5 rivalry points with Isabela.

I'll keep my eyes open for more, it looks like you missed a few more options to gain rivalry with Isabela.

Thanks for those two, I've updated the FAQ. I remember the dalish assassin, but couldn't remember the actual quest name. I also added a bug in act 3... you still get friendship +10 for giving Isabela the Rivaini Talisman, even if you're on the rivalry path. You still don't get to flirt with her if you do, unlike the friendship path.

Is is so stupid that the Rival Romance is so uphill, you need a guide (as hoorayforicecrem had generously done) to even try it. You would think she of all people would shag a rival just as much as a friend *rolls eyes*. I guess my Warrior Hawke has to friendship romance her IF he wants to romance the pirate (already at level 9 with like 30 friend points) and either keep her at all times or remove her as the other topic dictates you can:

I tried to rivalmance with her and I was nearly succeeded until I decide to take bribes or ask money.

Man that girl loves money... and when I go with my Ruthless Mage Hawke .... I assume she likes it rough.

Isabela is by far the hardest to gain rivalry with, huh? The other three romance options are ridiculously easy to gain rivalry with. Both Fenris and Anders can be at nearly full rivalry before the end of Act 1, and gaining rivalry with Merrill is like a walk in the park in Act 2 (her personal quests + destroying tomes = full rivalry with ease).

Who would have thought that Isabela of all people would be the difficult one? :P

She is definitely much more predisposed towards friendship. I think the current count is 195 available friendship points in the first 2 acts, compared to 130 rivalry points. The 130 rivalry points should actually only be 120, because it's impossible to get the +10 for sleeping with her unless you eat the +25 friendship points for flirting with her.

Then again, I didn't really like the rivalry romance so much. The relationship didn't seem as much like a relationship, it seemed more like Hawke was some sort of ideal and she sort of had a change of heart about how she lived. There wasn't as much passion in it, whereas with the friendship there's banter, flirting and a much more visible feeling of closeness. Rivalry, for the most part, is Isabela saying "You're such a bore!" and eventually admitting that maybe there's something to helping people stuff after all.

I wonder whether they just rushed the rivalry part or not, simply because there are almost no flirting options at all with Rivalry. With friendship, I remember having flirt options:

- Night Terrors apology
- Giving the ship in the bottle
- Giving the Rivaini Talisman
- Start of Act 2
- To initiate sex in Act 2
- Questioning Beliefs at 50%
- Questioning Beliefs at 100%

With Rivalry, these are the flirt options I found:
- Start of Act 2 (gives friendship points)
- To initiate sex in act 2

There's even a bug with her gift in act 3, it gives friendship points even if you are on the rivalry path (it is not supposed to do this).

Gah, that's frustrating. I was looking forward to rivalmancing Isabela; I expected it to be fiery. :(

You get a flirt option on the rivalry path for the Rivaini Talisman.

This sucks in so many ways...I wanted my Mage Hawke to Romance her as the Destiny trailer implies he does, but the Friendship bug scares me from doing a Friendly romance.

There are workarounds, such as only removing Isabela from the group via visiting Hawke's House or going to the Qunari Compound. However, the real killer is that it's slow in its accumulation, so it's hard to notice until it's gone too far.

On my first playthrough, I made Hawke a healer, so attack speed wasn't quite as big a deal. Of course, Isabela almost never left my group anyway, so I didn't get affected much by the bug. YMMV.

Reading the FAQ, it also said that Sebastian's friendly ability bugs like Isabela's. I know to watch my stats like a hawk while respeccing, but is there anything else I need to worry about? I wanna do one more "perfect" run-through to feel satisfied with the game for now, and it would really kill me to find out I have some nasty stacking bug that will ruin me in future imports.

The stacking bug is caused when abilities that grant stat bonuses with icons next to your Mabari Warhound summon show up. Isabela's friendship bonus, Sebastian's friendship bonus, and all item set bonuses qualify and can result in permanent stat lowering.

That said, I don't think it will make a difference in future game imports... The warden's stats from DA:O and the other games made no difference whatsoever when importing. The only things that mattered were what decisions were made.

Thanks, good to know. I'll have to keep an eye on those item sets too then.

Awesome FAQ.  Very helpful, thanks!

Just a note though, I got the flirt option on the rivalry path from the Night Terrors apology.  I got +10 friendship for choosing the flirt option.   I had to do the Questioning Beliefs Isabella's Search immediately before it though.  And I never flirted with her prior to this.

Edit: wrong quest name.

UPDATE:  She never appeared in Hawke's Estate at night after this so I don't think the flirt option actually worked to initiate the romance.  I loaded another save, flirted during Isabella's Search instead, which led to +15 Friendship (not +25).  That took me below 50 rivalry.  Then I did The Apology, called her a backstabber and got +10 rivalry- which took it back over 50 rivalry.  Headed straight to the estate and there she was.  Got rivalry points here as well.  Went back to the hanged man for Questioning Beliefs and got more rivalry points.  I'm thinking that the actual number of points towards rivalry or friendship might be based on how many points you have at the time.  This seems to be true specifically for companion quests, but I have not tested it for proof.
