Characters using the ranged behavior attack enemies on sight. I didn't feel this was desirable because they would pull agro before my tank got the chance to mix it up. So I decided to try the cautious behavior since the character won’t attack unless directed to by a tactic or the player.

This is what I saw...

Sorry the video is a bit hard to see. I’m new at the whole movie maker thing.

Its almost exactly what I want. Bethany won’t attack until Hawke selects a target (ie an enemy has the double red rings around its feet). However, after Hawke selects a target, she will attack once with her staff, then do a silly little twirl.

Bethany is using the following tactic and that’s it.

Enemy: Target of Hawke -> Attack

Why doesn’t she do a full auto attack? Am I doing something wrong? It it a bug? I’ve been having a very difficult time getting tactics setup the way I want. /headhurts

I'm guessing no one knows the deal with this?

Maybe that is what the cautious behavior does...no full auto attack. I would think that if you set her to ranged with that one tactic: Enemy: Target of Hawke -> Attack
that she wouldn't attack until you have a target. She should start attacking when you start attacking. Unless you've already tried that.

This maybe too late, but here goes anyway.

In DA:O, Enemy: Target of Party Member is one of the conditions that either sets or changes targets. It appears DA2 is using similar mechanics to DA:O.

With Bethany's tactics set to:
Enemy: Target of Hawke -> Attack

you are contantly telling her to reset her target to Hawke's target with each cycle of the tactics engine. The issue that you are seeing maybe because Bethany is resetting her target rather than locking on to one and auto-attacking on her own after it has already been set.

You can try changing Bethany's tactics to something that will make her only choose a target (Hawke's) if she doesn't have one already. Like:

Enemy: Any -> Attack
Enemy: Target of Hawke -> Attack

Enemy: Any - only applied to an existing target in DA:O and did not change or set target. I am assuming it is still the same for DA2.

I got this baton-twirling behaviour when I set everyone to Passive. (I had Enemy: Target of Hawke -> Attack as the last line of everyone's tactics - this works totally fine on the more aggressive presets).

Even with only one enemy, Merril would just stand there spinning her staff and not attacking. Initially it seemed to work fine (no-one starts attacking until Hawke does), but then multiple times Merril just went into baton-twirling mode. Unlike your video, she wasn't attacking AT ALL unless I specifically told her to, in which case she would fire one shot and go back to being a cheerleader. I disabled all the "Target of Hawke" tactics and behaviour continued.

Eventually just changed everyone to Ranged. Combined with "Pause at start of combat" I was able to avoid ranged pulling aggro when they shouldn't with early shots.

Thanks for the tip. I just tried the above tactics and the same thing still happens. Its like she's auto attacking but does a silly little staff twirl instead of the three different auto attack animations.

Even with the above she does the twirl. She'll pick some enemy, usually the closest, do one attack then twirl.

I think is has to do with the behaviors that don't automatically target enemies when they become visible. The same thing happens on passive.

That's what I had to as well. I'd like to reduce the amount I micro but writing tactics to do what I want has been a pain.

That is very strange indeed.  I just got home.  I'll load the game up in a few minutes to see if it is happening with mine as well.  I am also curious about what viverravid is experiencing.  I'll try to look for a save game where I can see that too.

@nicodeemus327:
Interesting. I witnessed the baton twirling animation on mine too. Bethany still attacked but it was as you said, attack then baton twirl then attack.

@viverravid:
I couldn't replicate Merrill not attacking at all in "passive". Merrill did what Bethany was doing, attack-baton twirl-attack.

I think the character's target is being forcibly cleared by the "cautious" behavior and then re-set by the tactic Enemy: Target of Hawke -> Attack with each cycle. And the baton twirling could be caused or associated with the "stop fight" part.

In DA:O, "cautious" is suppose to set up the character to not attack and run away from melee. "Passive" sets target to melee attacker unless the target is killed or moves away.

I thought the tactics would allow you to to set target via condition at least in either mode, "caution" at least. It appears that might not be the case.

Or, it could all be very buggy.

Sorry, guys. I thought I was on to something.
