I just bought the Platinum edition online at steam. The single player works fine, but when I try to log on online the game says "Error: Your game is unregistered. Please see www.atari.us.support.com (or something like that). I went to this link and it did not exist. I can not find in the support why it is not working, or find where to register my game. Please help.

Go to your Neverwinter Nights 2 folder in your documents.
Look for a file named nwn2cdkey.ini and open it.
If there are no keys written to the lines Key1, Key2, and Key3, get your keys from your Steam Library by Right-Clicking Neverwinter Nights 2, and selecting View Game CD Key. The first key goes into Key1, the second key to Key2, and the last one to Key3. Save it, and try again.

You will need to enter the keys in the following format:
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

If you use the -HOME command line option, your nwn2cdkey.ini will be in the folder you specified in the -home option.

Default Locations
Windows XP
\\My Documents\\Neverwinter Nights 2

Windows Vista/7
C:\\Users\\**USERNAME**\\Documents\\Neverwinter Nights 2

This fix was supposed to work. Only one issue. I can not find the nwn2cdkey.ini file...
Any help?

that's odd, it would say nwn2cdkey.ini is in the Documents directory .. i'm using non-Steam, the file on my system is ' nwncdkey.ini ' and its in the installation folder

try looking there, under Steam install, and who knows? you might be best to copy it both places, with their respective names

So I went into C:\\Users\\Aidan\\Documents\\Neverwinter Nights 2 (lol Aidan is my name), and I did not find it. I added a folder called nwn2cdkey.ini and in it I wrote:
[CDKEY]
Key1=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Key2=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
key3=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

(but with my keys obviously)
I tried to start the game, and it still did not let me go online.

Currently trying a reinstall. I deleted the entire NWN folder. I was only an hour into the game, and hopefully it will reinstall with the correct .ini

You should put it in your installation folder. Wherever the game is installed. On most computers, it would be:

C:\\Program Files\\Neverwinter Nights 2

I'm not familiar with the steam version, but the authentication mechanism is obviously still the same.

For steam it is located in C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\neverwinter nights 2.

IS there already a nwn2cdkey.ini or should I create one?

I tried to add one (as one one was already there) and it did not work. Im getting really mad, and the atari support were unhelpful.

The atari support team told me to "Greetings! If you bought the game from the Steam digital download service you will need to register your key though the Steam interface 1. Download the game to your computer (doing this through Steam is great) 2. Select the game in the 'My Games' section 3. Right-Click and choose 'Manage Game Account' 4. When your browser loads the game's website, it will have your Key in the dialog box, click submit (Be aware that our supported browsers are Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox) 5. Choose the subscription model you want and click submit, You will not be charged until your 30 free days are used 6. Fill in the required information to complete the transaction Your key will now be associated with your account and you should be able to log in! Sincerely, Atari Support "

Shame that NWN has no subscription, and manage game option does not exist. And that was the second time, and I explained in my complaint that it did not work.

So NWN is located at
C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\neverwinter nights 2
The file is actually called nwncdkey.ini (not nwn2cdkey.ini)
But it is still not there.

Ok, so I found the solve.

Create a file in
C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\neverwinter nights 2

Create a text document called nwncdkey.ini

In this document write

[CDKEY]
Key1=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Key2=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
key3=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
(but replace the Xs with your key.

This should allow you to play!

Thanks for figuring this out. I used your instructions and added them to the FAQ in this thread towards the bottom so hopefully it helps some other players.

I'm having a different problem. Since a couple days ago when I'm using Steam to play NWN2 I load it up just fine. When I get to the Multiplayer section is wants me to log in and it keeps taking forever and giving me an error that says the Bioware authentication server is down. I can then log into Gamespy and not into the server I've been ritually playing on for the past few months. I don't see any other posts about this server being down so do I have some kind of error?

I am not sure. Try reinstalling. I have not seen this issue, so it may just be a problem with your game. Also try varifying game files on steam.

Is the server listed in your browser?

The server is listed. I'm posting on the server forum for help too. When I go through multiplayer after the error message the server shows up as offline(which I know it isn't from talking with friends). I've tried using Direct Connect and resetting my connection as well. Should I reinstall?

No... a reinstall won't help you in this case. It sounds like the status of the server(s) isn't being updated from GameSpy to your computer (or vice versa).

If you have the IP a direct connect should work. Otherwise you'll have to wait until GS gets back up (I've experienced this myself a number of times...).

nwncdkey.ini is the filename on the regular version too. Glad you figured it out though. :)

Ok, just wanted to let you know the issue is resolved. I restarted my roommates router and my computer and now things seem to be working properly. Thanks!
