I actually find it interesting that I'm all for defend the oppressed mages and arguing that they shouldn't be punished for something they could do or become, like use Blood Magic (which in of itself I don't see as evil) or become an abomination.

Yet, I can't seem to do the same for Anders during subsequent playthroughs.

It may have to do with, it being a set story, Anders WILL do it, and not just MIGHT do it. I guess you could use that arguement about the other mages that turn to questionable or even stupid actions, like Orsino for example. Which would either invalidate my defense of these mages, or imply I should do the same for the likes of Anders.

Yes this is definitely an issue on repeat pt's, not only with Anders and Merrill but Isabela too.

Yep..Will do my best to make Isabella return and give her naked ass to Arishok. On my first playthrough she ran away and never returned.
I felt terrible when I had to kill Arishok.
As for Anders and Merril, I actually like what they do... And that's also a problem as I basically will encourage them every time now...

I don't hate Isabela.  I just can never get her rivalry or friendship scale high enough for her to stay, which reinforces the apathy about her.

I probably do hate Anders and Merrill.  I try not to, but I get too wrapped up in the story lines and can't set things aside.  Maybe after I set the game down for a while and come back to it, with some distance.

It's the same way with me.  The other characters' agendas are fairly easy to figure, so if you are trying to please one or another you know what to do.  I thought Isabela was all about the money, but she gives -5s for decisions I thought she'd like, where cash is demanded.

My second Hawke is an archer rogue anyways, and a second rogue in the party is sort of a fifth wheel anyways.  At least Hawke and Varric don't try to tank.

Is it possible to get Varric to dislike you?

Yes, I'm replaying and I'm having a hard time with Anders, despite the fact that in-game I'm trying to romance him.

Merill I never could get into. Aveline (I think) said in one of the party banters that Merill was capable and talented, but very stupid. And I pretty much agree with that. Even playing as a pro-mage mage, I was like "STOP DOING THAT! ARGH!"

I somewhat agree, but i probably wouldn't have liked him anyway.. OKAY! we get it, you are a mage... Jesus Christ..

Carver summed it up perfectly. "I don't hate you because you're a mage. I hate you because you never shut up about it."

He essentially became Velanna.

"You know that chip on your shoulder? I think it's replaced your head." You-know-who to Velanna

RIP Anders 1.0 :(

Total agreement with the OP.

Replayed the game twice and I never liked Anders a little since knowing his future. I just....don't like the guy. But he's a great support character.

I romanced Anders first and I'm glad of it. He didn't feel whiny to me when I was totally on board with his cause. But for my second playthrough -- a rogue Hawke who just wanted money and laughs -- he was such a nag. Anders, love, put a sock in it.

I'm currently in Act 2 in my current playthough, and while doing Merrill companion quests and chats, I had Anders in my party.

He is so hypocritical and condescending towards her, I just feel like slapping the guy. I guess it's a complement to the game that I can feel such real annoyance at the character though.

I can't really see how his "Justice" demon is any better than Merrills interaction with demons. Or her blood magic/magic knife object is any worse than his bomb.

Spoilers I guess

So this happen to anyone else? My main example is with Anders, seeing as I don't agree with his actions at the end of the game. During my second playthrough, I couldn't really warm up to him, knowing what he will eventually do.

Though I am currently playing a jerk Hawke, so it doesn't really effect the RPing in this case :P

For me, it was moreso with Isabela than Anders.  She's responsible for just as much damage to Kirkwall as Anders is.

I dearly enjoyed having Anders and Fenris along for Merrill's quest, to the point that I really question her sanity for simply deciding to remain around with Hawke, given that any time I did her quest it was the three of us being ****s to her dumb self.

With Isabela I really do love her and I love how she grew in the years went by, as well as the fact that she returns to you with the tome. Unlike Anders she didn't cause all this death intentionally, and well again I love her so I guess I'm not /that/ much better than Janders fans who forgive him for romance. And in returns to story I usually continue to complete the Justice quest, I like Anders betraying me pushing me to support the templars whereas before I had been a seeker of a middle way, and yeah I always play a mage.

Another "Anders broke my heart" here. The problem is that I played a BoyHawke for the first run, so I never got to do the romance without foreknowledge (well, I suppose I could have since Anders is bi, but I didn't know) now with my mage and him having so much in common, loving each other despite the danger, yatatatata, I know that this stupid Justice quest is him just using me to set up mass murder.

Actually, having foreknowledge of the way Izzy behaves over the course of the game is all that enables me to enjoy having her as a companion. And I never liked Anders, so who cares. There was potential of reversing my opinion on him with the Justice thing, but not with the route they picked, which I'm actually kind of glad about in some respects. I would have been happier if Justice had maintained a separate personality and you could actually communicate with him.

I originally was going to do the Fenris romance first then Anders 2nd but foreknowledge made me lose interest in pursuing the latter. With the siblings, foreknowledge affects what actions I take at the end of Act 1. Otherwise, nothing much makes any difference.
