What is a rivalmance with Merrill like?

It's on Youtube, and it's quite dramatic. *SPOILER* She openly begs Hawke not to save her, that she's not worth saving, when she comes to Hawke's house. That's about all I know, though.

I suppose I should have said "Though, honestly, who isn't at 100% friendship by act 3 (unless you've chosen rivalry, then you'd probably be 100% rivalry anyways)?"

I was at ~3/4th friendship actually, since i prefer not to game the system Image IPB  So my Hawke was mostly nice to her because she's another mage and all, but he'd still try to talk some sense into her and that's not something she takes kindly to.

Was hoping she'd eventually come to recognize that after it ended with her clan wiped out, but that's apparently bugged. So i'm instead pretending she's now suffering from the HeroicBSOD Image IPB

My Hawke doesn't do bad things.

I found this comment to exceedingly amusing.

May I inquire as to why you find that amusing?

You may, though I haven't much of an explanation, except that you're pure evil <3

My first playthrough, I picked a dialog option after killing the Keeper that led to me slaughtering the entire Dalish clan. I felt so awful, and it was so wrong.  Especially when I was slaughtering Feynriel's mother, who was hitting a fully champion armored Hawke with her fists.  I was hoping that this outcome wasn't inevitable, so I reloaded and went through the Keeper fight again, and found the dialog option where I wouldn't have to kill the whole clan. I really wanted to hand her back to the clan for them to do what they wanted with her, but my options were only to keep her or to kill everyone. So grudgingly, I took responsibility for her as that wouldn't lead to a massacre.

I'm still holding a grudge against Merrill for that. I'm on my 3rd playthrough, and I've been 100% rivals with her every time. I just keep her in the alienage. That's punishment enough.

My Hawke only did one thing in the entire game that made me (the player) feel like a jerk.

he wiped out the Dalish clan. ):

It was so terrible, that I half thought Demon!Keeper had somehow worked her magic to send Merrill and friends into the Fade, and that all ensuing events were a wild fever dream that would GO AWAY as soon as we got to the end of the Dalish camp.

It didn't happen. QQ

It's okay. I still love you *holds*

I thought it was a dream at first, too. I'll admit that I reloaded so I didn't kill the clan.

Lets see, first playthrough as Rogue i killed Merrill's clan while Romancing her :(

Second Playthrough, as a Mage i sided with the Templars and helped Meredith destroy the Circle. Then the ***** betrayed me and I had to kill her.

Also during that playthrough i stabbed Anders, but the thing that makes me feel bad is i felt some pride in killing Anders for what he did.

I didn't reload. QQ My Hawke kind of deserved the reality shock for being all, "Your keeper turned into an abomination
and attacked us!"

Tactless Hawke.  Very tactless.

Hawke 1: Being friendly and supportive to Merrill in her endeavours, because she loved her, rather than acting on the voice of reason in her head that told her this would all end in disaster

Hawke 2: Siding with the Templars in the end.

That's not tactless at all, it's the truth. That was the line I picked the first time. I wish that had been an opportunity for some sort of persuasion challenge. A longer conversation where you attempt to convince the clan that Merrill's not responsible would have been nice.

Worst thing my character did (it's about time I actually answered)... I think killing the creepy paedophile magististrate's son. While that doesn't seem like a bad thing, she's someone who believes very strongly in justice, the courts, the rule of law... which is all fine and dandy in theory, but when presented with that situation, she couldn't bring herself to bring the man in.

She felt guilty for a while afterwards. It was a situation where her gut clashed with her mind. She knew that he deserved a trial and whatever punishment the system meted out to him, but she couldn't give him one. Cognitive dissonace for the lose :pinched:

lol, guess it depends on which side of the fence you're on.

Considering the Dalish were already pretty riled up about Merrill 'endangering the clan', it probably wasn't the best idea to follow up the Keeper's death with, "She became an abomination to stop Merrill!"

It was sort of one of those things that my Hawke said (honest truth) that, looking back, he would have handled differently. >.>

He didn't want to kill them all, it just happened! :crying:

It was everybody but Merrill's fault. "Suicide by Hawke" is a prevalent cause of death. Don't you "side of the fence" me!

I agree.  I took the Dalish's side in thinking Merrill was ultimately responsible for the outcome.  I did not want to take responsibility for her, I had no choice.

That was originally the option I chose as well.  I thought if I explained that the Keeper made the sacrifice of her own choice, that they would understand.  They did not.  :crying:  They only thing they wanted was for her to be exiled, so my Hawke accepted that duty.

You already know how I feel about Merrill. :wub:

I just meant that the Dalish don't feel the same way.  So hearing their keeper went all 'abominable' to stop Merrill probably wasn't the best news of the day. :whistle:

Still, attacking Hawke & co.? In what universe is that not death-worthy stupidity? We accept it of bad guys, but we've done quests for the Dalish. They should know better.

I would have been happy killing them, if there weren't so few left anyways. I suppose culling the dumb ones from the herd has been succesfully applied, but the herd isn't so big nowadays. Too bad you couldn't loot their camp; That would have been tempting.

1st hawke: fell for Merrill, let her do everything she wanted and always sided with her on everything (i'd do it again)
2nd hawke: helped that one guy get poison (this hawke didn't do too many bad things)
3rd hawke: let bethany die ( this was my mage hating aggresive hawke that kills anyone first chance she gets.)

Taking responsibility for Merrill does seem worded to paint her as responsible for the Keeper's death because of her use of blood magic, but Hawke's words off to me because she's not responsible for what happened. "Death by Hawke" sounds about right, though. I don't know how I feel about the clan. Merrill gives rivalry for taking responsibility but blaming her blood magic, and friendship for admitting the truth, and I'm not certain I should feel bad about taking down a group of bigoted morons who insulted Merrill for being in a relationship with a human and tried to kill her because she devoted seven years of her life for a relic that could have improved their lives - risking her neck in the process.

I slaughter the Dalish clan every time.

One, for mercilessly bullying Merrill because she's helping them;
Two, for acting all superior and calling me "Shemlen" at every turn;
Three, for being idiotic thugs who deny their own culture and heritage;
Four, for attacking me like belligerent street brats simply because I TOLD THE TRUTH;
Five, for being buttf*cking UGLY.

A more death-deserving mob I have never met. Good riddance!

You know, I know Merril insists she's helping the clan, but I see precisely zero evidence that stupid murder mirror is going to help a damn thing. So I can't really fault the clan for being all "whatever!" about it.

I like the Dalish, though, and my two favorite wardens were both Dalish, so ... I don't want to kill them, that's my Warden's clan! D:

Well the mirror was more important to Merrill than anyone or anything else.  Demons make deals with mages according to their greatest weaknesses.  The fact that "Audacity" is the name of the demon who tempted Merrill was all I needed to know.  I opposed Merrill's blood magic and deals with demons throughout, which is why I got 100% rivalry with her.  Never saw a single instance in DAO or DA:2 where something horrific didn't result from deals with demons.  So yeah, I couldn't stand beside her.
