Well i played through the entire game and I managed to get to level 26 by the end of the game. I had final thought and as far as anyone had told me it was the strongest. I was caught unawares when, after killing Orisino, I found a deamonic rod(staff) with fire damage of 50 and a 12+ damage verses demons

Aren't those + damage modifiers only added in after the fact? So the 50 damage is modified by your magic attribute and then you get a flat +12 damage on top of that. So when you are doing 200+ damage a hit the +12 fire damage is not as significant as it seems.

At least that's how I thought it worked.

I think you're right. I look at the base damage and its element to determine if I use a staff or not.

Just being fire means that staff won't get much if any use after you pick it up.

I'm not entirely sure I'd call that more powerful, in any sense of the word :D

Its because the randomly generated gear starts overtaking the unique items in the game once you've passed a certain level. I think once you've hit lvl 25 or so, even a regular superior longsword will have more damage than say Glendivalis or w/e.

Yep, its even worse if you have something with "enemies drop better equipment".

Is there a hard level cap in DA2? I kinda want to use the console to cheat and play the entire game at the level cap.

My friend managed to screw around with the leveling glitch, and he maxed out at level 48, if I recall.

Level cap is 50, and I think even the regular stuff stops get better at some point. If you have Fadeshear, however, then your laughing, because at level 50 that thing is ridiculous!

Well if the final thought is not the best staff then what is?

Yeah... every time you level up your equipment becomes less powerful as ALL the enemies level up with you. It is a design decision I hope they revisit in upcoming titles.

Final Thought still better cause you can put Sandal's special rune in it.

except the staff base damage total buffs all your spells.

+damage is on the back end of basic attacks but will mod that type of spell damage directly before ccc modifiers and damage increase percentages.
