When does she tell you this? I keep hearing about it, but I never got the dialogue. And I went pro-Templar last time.UltiPup wrote...

If it weren't for the idol, though; she's actually arguing from a decent base.

You get this when Meredith gives you the quest 'Best Served Cold.' Go to 'investigate' and then choose the option about her hatred of mages seeming personal.

From what i understand her sister been the victim of some demon ..
Maybe , it's just me , but if her parent wouldn't have been so afraid to lost her daughter to the templars, they would have sought help...
I guess Mederedith really fancy that shiny armor to never try to look at thing in a different way

I don't think that's quite fair. It's not like she blames mages for what happened to her sister and by the time her sister got possessed, I doubt her parents were trying to hide that. They just did the typical refusing to tell anyone that their daughter is a mage kind of thing. It's a lot like what Isolde did (minus an apostate tutor, I'd suppose) and like the Hawkes did. Unfortunately, since Amelia had no one like the Circle-trained Malcolm to teach her how to use her magic or to stay away from demons, disaster struck.Reznore57 wrote...

Meredith took from the experience the lesson that even the best-intentioned of mages are a danger to themselves and others and that allowing them to live free and unwatched would be not only a recipe for disaster but a disservice to everyone involved. That it was easy to understand where they were coming from and sympathize but that just one possessed mage can take down 70 innocent people before the templars catch up with them and that ANYONE can get possessed. She outright tells you that the Chantry gave her purpose after this and that she doesn't want her sister's death to be in vain.
The idol twists everything, though, and makes her go way overboard.

I mean during the game , she said things and i went "oh she's right , she's not an awful woman , she shows compassion"...
But just thinking about the first years in Kirkwall , when no stupid idol was there, a lot of mages were made tranquil for questionnable reasons... ( ..karl?....)
So my point of view is her hatred always been deeper than her compassion.
She's not always wrong , but i don't like her at all .

Karl was communicating with an apostate, and made plans to escape the Circle. He probably would have been made Tranquil under any other Templar's orders.

The Tranquil Solution quest shows Meredith did not sanction Ser Alrik's actions. Ser Alrik proposed the Tranquil Solution as a great idea. Meredith and the Divine both rejected it. Ser Alrik continued to do it, acting alone.
She is not unreasonable, before the idol taint. She is a lawful neutral character. She operates within the law and a personal honor code, but not necessarily compassion. That does not mean she is bad. During the On The Loose quest, I told Emile to return to the Circle. Meredith says she wants to execute him, but asks Hawke her opinion on whether he is dangerous. Hawke says no. Meredith says, ok, then we'll just watch him.

Oy, forgot about that.
Kirkwall's Templar Order's backasswardness led me to forget what they're actually supposed to be doing.

Just had a thought, when Justice emerged in front of Karl, his personality returned because of his close proximity to a creature of the Fade.
If a spirit like Justice entered a Tranquil, would it restore him?
Could you still make Anders Tranquil?
Hmm.

That's a very interesting thought. Perhaps the Tranquil ritual would sever Anders from Justice. But would it also sever Anders from the fade, or could it just splice Justice and leave Anders intact?

Anders never stupidly goes around telling people he's a blood mage. If you have Anders in the party when you talk to Emile, he chews Emile out for telling people he's a blood mage. The kid was claiming to be a blood mage to sound 'dangerous'. Claiming to be a blood mage would warrant execution, even if they turn themselves in. Meredith lets Hawke be the final arbiter on his fate. Meredith asked Hawke's opinion if he was dangerous. Hawke says, no he's harmless. Meredith will take Hawke at his/her word.
If you tell her Emile just told people he was a blood mage to get girls, she will be amused.

Pre-Idol Meredith probably wasn't insane. Just a hard*** super-templar with aspirations to control a town and a deep-seated resentment of mages.
Not resentment. Personal experience and pain. Her sister was a mage her family tried to hide from the Circle, like Hawke's family. Except her sister didn't have an apostate father to teach her how to control her magic. She was weak willed, and her parents feared she would be made tranquil. Then she became possessed, killed her family and 70 other innocent people. Meredith managed to survive, but was orphaned. She joined the templars and rose through the ranks through sheer determination (according to her bio in the codex). Determined to not let what happened with her sister happen to others.
Meredith also opposed, and deposed the previous tyrannical viscount. Her coup put Viscount Dumas in charge. She also executed the Knight Commander, but her reasons for doing so were not explained. Overthrowing the Viscount and executing the Knight Commander was supported by Elthina.
I am hoping for a DLC so I can understand her better.

The Tranquil Solution was proposed in response to a plot by blood mages to infect templars with demons. And Meredith said no to this proposal.
